Bates Demoted, Morris To Take Over As Defensive Coordinator |

Tampa Bay has demoted defensive coordinator Jim Bates and handed playcalling duties over to first-year head coach Raheem Morris. Bates, who was hired in the offseason, has overseen a Tampa Bay defense that ranks 27th overall and has allowed a league-high 168 yards rushing per game.
The Bucs already fired one of their coordinators before the 2009 regular season started. Ten games into the season the team appears to be on the verge of parting ways with another one.
Tampa Bay has demoted defensive coordinator Jim Bates and handed playcalling duties over to first-year head coach Raheem Morris.
The move comes two days after Tampa Bay's 38-7 loss to the undefeated New Orleans Saints at Raymond James Stadium. The 38 points allowed by Tampa Bay was a team-high for the 1-9 Bucs this season.
Ironically, it was about two and a half months ago when Morris and general manager Mark Dominik fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson 10 days before the season started.
Bates, 63, has overseen a Bucs defense that has struggled mightily this season. Tampa Bay is surrendering 29 points and 378 yards per game. It currently ranks 27th overall in the NFL and dead last (32nd) against the run, allowing 168 yards per game.
Bates' defenses were successful in Miami and Green Bay. He had a top 10-ranked defense in each of his five seasons with Miami. However, Bates' one-year tenure with the Denver Broncos went down a similar path to the one he's having in Tampa Bay. In Denver, Bates was stripped of his playcalling duties and demoted after Denver's defense struggled out of the gate. At the end of the 2007 season, Bates resigned.
The standards are much higher for defense in Tampa Bay after watching former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin help the Bucs rank in the top 10 in total defense in 11 of his 13 seasons with the team before leaving in January to take a job with the Tennessee Volunteers.
Morris, 33, is the league's youngest head coach. Before he succeeded Jon Gruden in that capacity in January, Morris was named Kiffin's successor one month prior. He has never handled defensive playcalling duties in an NFL game before, but did serve as Kansas State's defensive coordinator during the 2006 season before accepting an offer to re-join Tampa Bay as a defensive backs coach in 2007.
Morris has been more involved in the defense in recent weeks. Bates implemented a 4-3, two-gap scheme that required the cornerbacks to play less zone and more man-to-man coverage, but the Bucs have been playing more Cover 2 as the season has progressed after watching the secondary get beat on several deep passing plays earlier in the year.

Whatever happens next year, whoever gets fired, whatever route the Glazer's go....I just hope we keep Olsen as the QB coach. It's not that I think he is an amazing QB coach, but Freeman needs some consistancy if he is ever going to work out. We will already have a new offensive and defensive coordinator next year, at least keep the QB coach. Thats all i'm saying. Just look at JAson CAmbell and Alex Smith to see what a new QB coach and offensive coordinator every year does to a young QB.

Seriously though, just like with Jagz at OC, this looks like the right call, for now. I know it doesn't look good and the organization is a mess and they should have never hired these two guys to begin with apparantly................... BUT ...................... they are realizing their mistakes and addressing them, not letting them linger on for a year or years (Cleveland, Oakland, Detroit, etc...)
I alos understand that Bates had a defensive scheme that he wanted to implement but he didn't have the players. Well, all I can say is look at the great coaches: you get your players and if you don't have them you adapt until you do have them. Right now they do not have the players so they need to play a 1 gap scheme and more zone.
IMO though, the coverage hasn't been theat bad as of late, the lack of pass rush has killed the DBs.
Anyway, still doesn't change the fact that D-LINE needs to be addressed in the draft, it just might change who they go after.

vs Saints, leagues best QB (or one of), you're getting no pressure with the front four (what's new) - and you don't blitz?
I've said all along, no pressure from the front four, it doesn't matter what the scheme or who the DC is - it will be bad. Going back to Cover 2 is not the answer(if that is their thought), it's a bandaid for this year - maybe.
If the Bucs don't address the front four DT\DE in the draft, I'll be shocked. My 8 year old can see the weakness.

Now if they can just figure out a way to be competitive enough in these last few games, maybe they can lure a decent coach for next season. This was what I was afraid of in the beginning, and JDouble, I said it all along, and I'm in agreement with you that this entire mess all begins and ends with Ownership. To me, this is every bit entirely on their shoulders. There was no excuse for Gruden and Allen to be fired as late as they were, and that still pisses me off to this day.
We are literally the laughing stock of the NFL, along with the Browns and Lions. And that's sad.

I still think the move to fire Gruden and Allen was made entirely on the premise on ownership not allowing the regime to spend money in the upcoming free agent period, and the fans bought it hook, line, and sinker on a variety of other reasons pertaining to why they were let go. This fan is not buying it, and you can look no further than the players that were brought into Tampa, all of them signed to contracts with virtually no guaranteed money, which is highly unusual given they signed a number of players to deals.
That's not going to attract any type of coach with any type of successful track record to want to come here, and it really makes me upset when thinking about just how far off the wagon the Bucs have fallen. It's insane. Am I the only one that sees this? I mean really?

Also, when you don't have a franchise QB, franchise DT, or Franchise LT.....you should be spending alot less than other teams. Otherwise your just over paying the guys you do have.

Although he bears the responsibility for the Ds performance, I feel for Bates because he had players that didn't fit his scheme and a lot of raw undeveloped talent out there. Still, half time adjustments seemed week to me.

It's a combination of being put behind the 8-ball by ownership, but it still is what it is, a poor job by the entire staff, and by all accounts the team is only going to win 1 game.

I don't want to even think about what will happen after the new CBA is negoiated / signed. The Glaziers don't have money to bring in Real Football Players...and even if we target a free agent or 2 - why would they come here? Both Coordinators fired 10 games into the season. What Coordinator would want to come here to coach? My golf game is going to improve dramatically over the next couple of years.

That defense prior to the Carolina game had stopped the running likes of even Adrian Peterson earlier in the season.
That being said, I now get what I had wanted all along ... which was for Morris to be the defensive coordinator. If I could only get Gruden back as our head coach, I'd be all happy.
I just never understood how going with a system of defense that the majority of our players were not drafted for was going to work, and apparently it hasn't. I knew the secondary wasn't getting the Morris attention it needed at the beginning of the season, but his attention and better play has been better for it. However, the consistency of the secondary playing well is contingent upon the rest of the defense in the Cover 2, so that accounts for them not playing well all the time.
Just wish some of the veteran leadership had not been cut/released off season, even if it had to be done. That's another missing key ingredient on the defense, since no one has stepped up on the team. Maybe Morris can place his attention on that, too.

Jags and Bates looked like great hires in the offseason, turns out both were horrible decisions. By the way, who DID make these decisions? Because to my understanding it was Dominik.
In fact, to my understanding alot of these personnel decisions can be laid at Dominik's feet (that's not to say that Morris hasn't made more than his fair share of horrible decisions). So is this decision being made because the Glazers are thinking of hiring a new head coach in the off season? This a last ditch attempt by Morris/Dominik?

What coach would want to come here if owners are going to shell out some cash for players and we are going to remain last in payroll every year.
On the other hand I am glad that we didnt spend any money this past free agency period. Especialy on that bum Haynesworth.

No one (even BF47) knows how Allen and Gruden would have fared in 2009 but we could probably have won the single game this season with the poster jongruden and JDouble as coach and GM.
You don't become billionaires by not recognizing errors, being stupid and unwilling to take risks. The Glazers have made bold moves, or at least attempted to make them, in the past including the midnight signing of Gruden in the first place. I suspect they are watching this situation closely to see how it plays out. They can not be pleased with the results they are seeing on or off the field.
My guess is that, absent a remarkable turn-around these next six weeks, this time the Glazers will act swiftly and decisively to correct their apparent hiring error as Domink/Morris have done with theirs.
It's always better to do what you "know" will work than something you "hope" will work. They hoped Dominik/Morris would be a good choice. Now it's time to do what they know will be.
Tony Dungy.

They are not staying the course. They are panicking and throwing darts at the wall, praying that something eventually sticks.
No less than Tony Dungy stated on national TV that in order for the Bucs to grow and be successful, they MUST stay the course and stick to their original plan.
Bates never had a chance to run his defense exactly as he wanted to. after 3 games, the Bucs started mixing in Tampa 2 and now are switching permanently to last year's defense (the same defense this roster imploded using during the last 4 games).
They switched offenses and now they are switching defenses. It is impossible for players to improve if they are constantly learning new plays and schemes. For players to excel - the scheme must become second nature.
The people who succeed in life are those than initialize a plan and stick with it until success rears its head. Change for the sake of change never produces solid results.

This move could have been held off until the end of the season and Morris would definitely have been held on for at least one more year for finding Freeman. It shows more guts than any move he's made yet because it shows he's willing to do anything to win but it could really backfire. We'll see.
Go Bucs!!

You got to love that he waited until the game right after the Saints to do this. Of course the defense is going to look better the week after the Saints. Slick move Morris, I'll give you that.

We need an aggressive scheme using various blitz packages. When we line up to blitz, teams need to be thinking, 'oh sh!t, here they come', not 'LMAO, they're going to make this easier?'.
It's a band-aid move so Raheem can save face. If we had any kind of pass rush, Bates might look like a genius. But we don't and his @ss is out the door soon.

>hire offensive coordinator
>hire defensive coordinator
>acquire big stiff Byron Leftwich
>draft QB in first round and declare him the QB of the future before he arrives in town.
>pay Luc McClown 5mill
>sign second kicker to 2mill guaranteed
>fire Offensive coordinator because of lack of play calling experience!
>cut 85% kicker
>trade McClown for large order of fries at Wendys and cool wall calendar of dogs playing pool
>bench big stiff Leftwich partly for inability to throw 3 year screen passes after 10 years in the league without tearing fingers off of WR hands due to excessive velocity
>talk about the QB of the future but start the future second string guy
>hold countless post game conferences without using 1 complete sentence
>cut 2mill kicker for missing 85% of FG's
>sign guy off of the street to kick because he used to work at Burn's steak house and knew a lot about wines
>cut steak house guy...missed too many kicks and served soggy carrots at post game meal.
>sign mall cop Blarth to kick in place of steak house guy (this move actually worked!)
> curse out ref and get 15 yard penalty for commenting on ref's extremely small genitals
>play the Saints...and watch pop warner defense arm tackle like they had dates later on and didn't want to get dirty
>fire shitty Defensive coordinator....but keep him on as a "consultant"...in case we need advice on how to play shitty in the future!!
>RAH takes over next NFL job opportunity....Defensive coordinator!
wow...you can't make this stuff up folks.....and all of this.....in just 10 WEEKS INTO THE SEASON!!!!
in conclusion....going back to the Gruden offense without Gruden.....going back to Monte's defense without Monte...... Everyone currently on the defense was there last year on a 9/7 team just missing the playoffs!!!!
well they say that players will emulate their coach.....the defense got confused and decided to play like Kathy Bates instead of Jim!
"...and with the first pick in the 2010 NFL draft....the Tampa Bay Bucs pick.............."
