Bates Demoted, Morris To Take Over As Defensive Coordinator

Tampa Bay has demoted defensive coordinator Jim Bates and handed playcalling duties over to first-year head coach Raheem Morris. Bates, who was hired in the offseason, has overseen a Tampa Bay defense that ranks 27th overall and has allowed a league-high 168 yards rushing per game.

The Bucs already fired one of their coordinators before the 2009 regular season started. Ten games into the season the team appears to be on the verge of parting ways with another one.

Tampa Bay has demoted defensive coordinator Jim Bates and handed playcalling duties over to first-year head coach Raheem Morris.

The move comes two days after Tampa Bay's 38-7 loss to the undefeated New Orleans Saints at Raymond James Stadium. The 38 points allowed by Tampa Bay was a team-high for the 1-9 Bucs this season.

Ironically, it was about two and a half months ago when Morris and general manager Mark Dominik fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson 10 days before the season started.

Bates, 63, has overseen a Bucs defense that has struggled mightily this season. Tampa Bay is surrendering 29 points and 378 yards per game. It currently ranks 27th overall in the NFL and dead last (32nd) against the run, allowing 168 yards per game.

Bates' defenses were successful in Miami and Green Bay. He had a top 10-ranked defense in each of his five seasons with Miami. However, Bates' one-year tenure with the Denver Broncos went down a similar path to the one he's having in Tampa Bay. In Denver, Bates was stripped of his playcalling duties and demoted after Denver's defense struggled out of the gate. At the end of the 2007 season, Bates resigned.

The standards are much higher for defense in Tampa Bay after watching former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin help the Bucs rank in the top 10 in total defense in 11 of his 13 seasons with the team before leaving in January to take a job with the Tennessee Volunteers.

Morris, 33, is the league's youngest head coach. Before he succeeded Jon Gruden in that capacity in January, Morris was named Kiffin's successor one month prior. He has never handled defensive playcalling duties in an NFL game before, but did serve as  Kansas State's defensive coordinator during the 2006 season before accepting an offer to re-join Tampa Bay as a defensive backs coach in 2007.

Morris has been more involved in the defense in recent weeks. Bates implemented a 4-3, two-gap scheme that required the cornerbacks to play less zone and more man-to-man coverage, but the Bucs have been playing more Cover 2 as the season has progressed after watching the secondary get beat on several deep passing plays earlier in the year.

PewterReport.com will have more on this story throughout the day.

Wow- that news really instills confidence...what a mess.

The players still suck. As long as the D line is still the same and Ruud is in the middle this defense will suck. Hopefully they can try to fix thier 2 minute problem.

Have to wait til next season to see improvement.

YES !!! very good news. We still have a lot of issues but we going in the right direction for this one. Tampa 2 is the best system for our players. May be we can expect Ruud who suck (big time) in the bates system was dominant in tampa 2 last 2 years. even if Dominik and Rah have done big mistakes with offensive and defensive coordinator, they have the balls to correct it. Good point for them. It's not so common for manager and head coach to admit their mistakes and make that kind of decision. They're not afraid to do it ... We still have problems but we're heading in the right direction ...

Bring D. Brooks back. As the defensive coordinator. I'm pretty sure he knows the Tampa 2.:) and he will command respect from the younger players. Just a thought....

This proves the Glazers still have some pride left in running this team. At the end of the season, DROP the other shoe!!

Can't say I'm surprised here....Bates' round peg/square hole theory was starting to wear thin on everyone I think. As someone said in an earlier article, believe it was bucfan47, this is another black eye against Morris and his decision making though. Makes one wonder though if he can be succesful in making the defense look better if he may be retained as the D coord and a new HC brought in next year. Let's hope Turner doesn't play again this week and the Tampa 2 can force some turnovers on Matty Ice.

It's just 10 games late!! Should of been fired with Jag. Next step is that he needs to be given his walking shoes since he can't stop a run.

My, wonder about the people that hired Jags, and Bates. Could it be they are not good at judging talent. Not the kiind of people I want to draft players.

8:56am, November 24, 2009

JDouble

I wanted Bates fired, so I'm kinda happy. His system wasn't working here and he had lost the players. On the flip side, we now have no real coordinators. Just an inexperienced headcoach and a QB coach running everything. What a mess.

Whatever happens next year, whoever gets fired, whatever route the Glazer's go....I just hope we keep Olsen as the QB coach. It's not that I think he is an amazing QB coach, but Freeman needs some consistancy if he is ever going to work out. We will already have a new offensive and defensive coordinator next year, at least keep the QB coach. Thats all i'm saying. Just look at JAson CAmbell and Alex Smith to see what a new QB coach and offensive coordinator every year does to a young QB.

9:01am, November 24, 2009

dcrum35

Hey at least now Raheem will get the Co-ordinator experieince everyone wanted him to have... LOL

Seriously though, just like with Jagz at OC, this looks like the right call, for now. I know it doesn't look good and the organization is a mess and they should have never hired these two guys to begin with apparantly................... BUT ...................... they are realizing their mistakes and addressing them, not letting them linger on for a year or years (Cleveland, Oakland, Detroit, etc...)

I alos understand that Bates had a defensive scheme that he wanted to implement but he didn't have the players. Well, all I can say is look at the great coaches: you get your players and if you don't have them you adapt until you do have them. Right now they do not have the players so they need to play a 1 gap scheme and more zone.

IMO though, the coverage hasn't been theat bad as of late, the lack of pass rush has killed the DBs.

Anyway, still doesn't change the fact that D-LINE needs to be addressed in the draft, it just might change who they go after.

9:03am, November 24, 2009

JDouble

Even though I have lost faith in Rheem and hope for a new coach next season, I don't think it's fair to say it's all his fault for hiring bad coordinators. Gruden was fired so late and he was made coach at a point in the offseason where all the fresh exciting coordinators had been signed already. He really didn't have much to choose from and that's on the Glazers.

9:04am, November 24, 2009

1bucfanjeff

Bates' ego must be too big or something. He ran, maybe, 1 blitz a game. WTF?
vs Saints, leagues best QB (or one of), you're getting no pressure with the front four (what's new) - and you don't blitz?
I've said all along, no pressure from the front four, it doesn't matter what the scheme or who the DC is - it will be bad. Going back to Cover 2 is not the answer(if that is their thought), it's a bandaid for this year - maybe.
If the Bucs don't address the front four DT\DE in the draft, I'll be shocked. My 8 year old can see the weakness.

9:11am, November 24, 2009

Your 8 year old son might very well be smarter than some of the guys running the Bucs right now!

Well, this is one step closer to where Morris deserves to be, a coordinator.

Now if they can just figure out a way to be competitive enough in these last few games, maybe they can lure a decent coach for next season. This was what I was afraid of in the beginning, and JDouble, I said it all along, and I'm in agreement with you that this entire mess all begins and ends with Ownership. To me, this is every bit entirely on their shoulders. There was no excuse for Gruden and Allen to be fired as late as they were, and that still pisses me off to this day.

We are literally the laughing stock of the NFL, along with the Browns and Lions. And that's sad.

9:27am, November 24, 2009

Actually the Browns and Lions are the Buzz of the NFL this week.

9:31am, November 24, 2009

This is just another sign that RahRah Fast-Talker and Dummynick are way over their heads and don't have a clue. We fired the OC, demoted the DC, are on our 3rd kicker and 3rd quarterback and they have admitted that they don't have the players on defense to get the job done, players that they told us only needed a chance. It is amateur hour at One Buc place and these are the same people that will be making the decisions come the draft. I hope that I am wrong, because I love the Bucs, but unless the Glazers make some major changes in the front office, I am afraid this team is doomed to years of mediocrity

9:33am, November 24, 2009

NJBuc

Wow, how's that for an answer?! In my post on the roundtable I questioned how long Jim Bates was gonna last...The answer, less than 24hrs... Totally agree w/ this move. As I said over there, good coordinators seem to adapt to the personnel they have until they get what they need to fully run their system. After firing the OC and now DC, obviously the red dot is now on Morris' forehead. Like it or not, I think he'll get another year. Just my .2 cents

9:48am, November 24, 2009

charbeth2 - Very good post and I'm afraid of that too. But in light of the economy and the money situation with the soccer team (reportedly $1 Billion with a "B" in debt), I'm not sure that ownership cares as much about the Bucs, and if that number is even close to being right, then I would have to say rightfully so.

I still think the move to fire Gruden and Allen was made entirely on the premise on ownership not allowing the regime to spend money in the upcoming free agent period, and the fans bought it hook, line, and sinker on a variety of other reasons pertaining to why they were let go. This fan is not buying it, and you can look no further than the players that were brought into Tampa, all of them signed to contracts with virtually no guaranteed money, which is highly unusual given they signed a number of players to deals.

That's not going to attract any type of coach with any type of successful track record to want to come here, and it really makes me upset when thinking about just how far off the wagon the Bucs have fallen. It's insane. Am I the only one that sees this? I mean really?

9:50am, November 24, 2009

chucky love

You can bet that Gruden, Allen and Kiffin were sick of the glazers and particulary Joel. Six years in a row of being last in the entire leauge in spending had to wear on them. That is why they are gone. In there own way, they each told Joel Glazer to stick it.

10:09am, November 24, 2009

JDouble

I remember the PR article that said we were last in spending, but I'm curious how this is true when we were in cap trouble every year for quite awhile. We were cutting guys to get under cap room every year and had Allen come in after McKay to get us under the cap. So if we were maxing out the cap...how were we not spending money?

Also, when you don't have a franchise QB, franchise DT, or Franchise LT.....you should be spending alot less than other teams. Otherwise your just over paying the guys you do have.

10:16am, November 24, 2009

surferdudes

Morris has a hard enough time being a H.C., how is he going to manage both jobs? This is a very interesting move, I would of thought they would've promoted J Barry. It kind of tells me Morris is being given a chance to turn one aspect of the team around or else. No extenstion for Olsen, another coordinator gone, you have to believe the Glazers will blow this up after the season. Come on down, Shanahan, Cower, Shotty, Gruden?

10:20am, November 24, 2009

Jonbuc

I like the move...a bit surprised Morris didn't coach the D from Day 1. Keep in mind folks that the Bucs wouldn't have even sniffed the playoffs with Chunky, Allen, Kiffin ( who wouldn't want to coach alongside their son?). The Saints are the real deal. Another year of "re-treading" the same old tire would have been even more frustrating than what's going on now IMHO. Let's give Morris,Olson and Dominick another season to right the ship. I'm amused at Chunky Love aka Jay Gruden and others that revel in the current state of disrepair of the Bucs.

i say we break all the eggs we need to in 2009, hopefully we're enjoying a nice omelette in 2010 or 2011. at this point it doesn't matter if they made 1 bad decision or 50 this year, as long as they learn from them and we're a better run team next year. this group has taken alot of flak for admitting their mistakes, but i prefer that to letting mistakes linger.

Nothing against Bates, but it just shows you how much of an impact Kiffin had in Tampa (until he checked out last Dec.) as to his coaching ability along with the amount of time he spent coaching/ preparing these guys every week.

Although he bears the responsibility for the Ds performance, I feel for Bates because he had players that didn't fit his scheme and a lot of raw undeveloped talent out there. Still, half time adjustments seemed week to me.

Jonbuc - Not sure how in the world you could make the statement regarding the old regime. Please explain to me how those experienced coaches could do worse? One could argue there are over a dozen collegiate coaches that could have done a better job than these guys are doing now.

It's a combination of being put behind the 8-ball by ownership, but it still is what it is, a poor job by the entire staff, and by all accounts the team is only going to win 1 game.

11:59am, November 24, 2009

The 2009 / 2010 season will be remembered as the "Lost Season" - Season Ticket holders should get their money back. I'll always be a Bucs Fan, but this is not going to turn around until the Glazer either give up Man-U or Sell the team.

I don't want to even think about what will happen after the new CBA is negoiated / signed. The Glaziers don't have money to bring in Real Football Players...and even if we target a free agent or 2 - why would they come here? Both Coordinators fired 10 games into the season. What Coordinator would want to come here to coach? My golf game is going to improve dramatically over the next couple of years.

We are gonna sign Cowher as HC next year. He'll get Russ Grimm to sign as our offensive line coach, Ron Riveria as our defensive coordinator, and Pete Carmichael as our offensive coordinator. We'll draft Suh, Kindle, Stuckey, and B. Graham with our first four picks and have a top ten defense again for decades. Oh, and a pig just flew by my window.

12:20pm, November 24, 2009

rebeccajill13

Kiffin may have left physically in January, but I'm going to say he left the team already mentally by the Monday night Carolina game starting our 4-game collapse after we had gone 9-3.

That defense prior to the Carolina game had stopped the running likes of even Adrian Peterson earlier in the season.

That being said, I now get what I had wanted all along ... which was for Morris to be the defensive coordinator. If I could only get Gruden back as our head coach, I'd be all happy.

I just never understood how going with a system of defense that the majority of our players were not drafted for was going to work, and apparently it hasn't. I knew the secondary wasn't getting the Morris attention it needed at the beginning of the season, but his attention and better play has been better for it. However, the consistency of the secondary playing well is contingent upon the rest of the defense in the Cover 2, so that accounts for them not playing well all the time.

Just wish some of the veteran leadership had not been cut/released off season, even if it had to be done. That's another missing key ingredient on the defense, since no one has stepped up on the team. Maybe Morris can place his attention on that, too.

12:27pm, November 24, 2009

c.mark

The idea with Morris was very similar to the roster - to see what we had. And its pretty clear that its not much. Just too many horrible decisions, I just don't understand how you can blow hiring both of your coordinators.

Jags and Bates looked like great hires in the offseason, turns out both were horrible decisions. By the way, who DID make these decisions? Because to my understanding it was Dominik.

In fact, to my understanding alot of these personnel decisions can be laid at Dominik's feet (that's not to say that Morris hasn't made more than his fair share of horrible decisions). So is this decision being made because the Glazers are thinking of hiring a new head coach in the off season? This a last ditch attempt by Morris/Dominik?

12:59pm, November 24, 2009

c.mark

Jdouble - can we also sign Brandon Marshall, Julius Peppers, and Demeco Ryans?

1:01pm, November 24, 2009

JDouble - I like the idea but will Glazers spend the money for Cowher and do you realy think he can get all those coaches do leave what they are doing just for cordinator and dline positions?

What coach would want to come here if owners are going to shell out some cash for players and we are going to remain last in payroll every year.

On the other hand I am glad that we didnt spend any money this past free agency period. Especialy on that bum Haynesworth.

1:03pm, November 24, 2009

As fans; most of us were hopeful that the regime change would eventually bring positive results after the up and down years and 2008 season-ending debacle and questionable personnel decisions ( that BF47 chooses to forget ), by the previous duo.

No one (even BF47) knows how Allen and Gruden would have fared in 2009 but we could probably have won the single game this season with the poster jongruden and JDouble as coach and GM.

You don't become billionaires by not recognizing errors, being stupid and unwilling to take risks. The Glazers have made bold moves, or at least attempted to make them, in the past including the midnight signing of Gruden in the first place. I suspect they are watching this situation closely to see how it plays out. They can not be pleased with the results they are seeing on or off the field.

My guess is that, absent a remarkable turn-around these next six weeks, this time the Glazers will act swiftly and decisively to correct their apparent hiring error as Domink/Morris have done with theirs.

It's always better to do what you "know" will work than something you "hope" will work. They hoped Dominik/Morris would be a good choice. Now it's time to do what they know will be.

Tony Dungy.

1:26pm, November 24, 2009

FilmBuc

The Bucs are making the one cardinal sin you cannot make when rebuilding:

They are not staying the course. They are panicking and throwing darts at the wall, praying that something eventually sticks.

No less than Tony Dungy stated on national TV that in order for the Bucs to grow and be successful, they MUST stay the course and stick to their original plan.

Bates never had a chance to run his defense exactly as he wanted to. after 3 games, the Bucs started mixing in Tampa 2 and now are switching permanently to last year's defense (the same defense this roster imploded using during the last 4 games).

They switched offenses and now they are switching defenses. It is impossible for players to improve if they are constantly learning new plays and schemes. For players to excel - the scheme must become second nature.

The people who succeed in life are those than initialize a plan and stick with it until success rears its head. Change for the sake of change never produces solid results.

1:48pm, November 24, 2009

pinkstob

I'm actually surprised by this. Not by the move itself but the timing of it. Morris has now opened himself up to more direct criticism. Now whenever the defense falters it will be his fault and he now has more of a chance of being fired at the end of the season. Unless of course the defense improves, then he'll look like part of the solution, not the problem.

This move could have been held off until the end of the season and Morris would definitely have been held on for at least one more year for finding Freeman. It shows more guts than any move he's made yet because it shows he's willing to do anything to win but it could really backfire. We'll see.

Go Bucs!!

Haha!

You got to love that he waited until the game right after the Saints to do this. Of course the defense is going to look better the week after the Saints. Slick move Morris, I'll give you that.

1:55pm, November 24, 2009

1bucfanjeff

Tampa 2 may be what some of these guys know, but it's not going to work for 2 reasons - no pass rush and old, passive scheme.
We need an aggressive scheme using various blitz packages. When we line up to blitz, teams need to be thinking, 'oh sh!t, here they come', not 'LMAO, they're going to make this easier?'.
It's a band-aid move so Raheem can save face. If we had any kind of pass rush, Bates might look like a genius. But we don't and his @ss is out the door soon.

2:23pm, November 24, 2009

Side note: going back to a 1gap scheme will help the pass rush some - I just don't think we have the players up front to really make a difference much.

Agree with Pinkstob, the timing is a little bit strange and it puts Rah in line of fire. He has to be successfull or he will be out ... not so sure ! The problem is in the hands of owner. As long as they have to pay Gru, they won't dismissed Rah because they would have to pay a lot more money to another coach. They promote Rah because it was a cheap move. Not to discuss about the timing of the firing of Gru. We can't blame Rah to take this chance, we all would have pick it. I definitely don't see the Glazers make a move at the end of this season. moreover, they have their excuse not to do it : Rah found Freeman ... it gives him one more year ... I don't know if it's a good knew or not. He's done a lot of bad moves, but, he has corrected some, showing some balls to do it. And his team still fight until the end of match (not very good but they try). And there isn't any finger pointing in the locker room ... He hasn't lost the player ... yet. This is his move for now

>sign mall cop Blarth to kick in place of steak house guy (this move actually worked!)
> curse out ref and get 15 yard penalty for commenting on ref's extremely small genitals
>play the Saints...and watch pop warner defense arm tackle like they had dates later on and didn't want to get dirty
>fire shitty Defensive coordinator....but keep him on as a "consultant"...in case we need advice on how to play shitty in the future!!

in conclusion....going back to the Gruden offense without Gruden.....going back to Monte's defense without Monte...... Everyone currently on the defense was there last year on a 9/7 team just missing the playoffs!!!!

well they say that players will emulate their coach.....the defense got confused and decided to play like Kathy Bates instead of Jim!
