Bucs wide receiver Michael Clayton sprained the MCL in his left knee against Atlanta and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks, including Sunday's contest at Carolina. The injury is not severe enough to place him on injured reserve. He is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by Maurice Stovall.

Bucs wide receiver Michael Clayton sprained the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee while blocking on the first play of last Sunday’s game at Atlanta. The injury is expected to sideline Clayton for at least 1-2 weeks and he will miss this Sunday’s contest at Carolina. The injury is not severe enough to place Clayton on injured reserve.

Maurice Stovall is expected to start in place of Clayton against the Panthers. Despite being a reserve for most of the season, Stovall actually has better numbers than Clayton does. Through nine games, Stovall, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent next year if there is an extension to the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, has 14 catches for 212 yards and one touchdown. Stovall had three catches for 26 yards in Sunday's loss at Atlanta.

Clayton has played in all 10 games, albeit for just one snap against Atlanta, and has 14 catches for 204 yards and one touchdown on the season.

The Bucs will deactivate Clayton against the Panthers, so that means either veteran Brian Clark or newcomers Yamon Figurs or Terrence Nunn could be active as the team’s fourth wide receiver on Sunday, joining Stovall, Antonio Bryant and Sammie Stroughter in the lineup.

I missed the first snap cause I was getting get a beer, but we should send a fruit basket to whoever put the lick on Clayton.

This is Stovall's chance to put a strangle hold on the spot.
I'm actually fairly excited about an AB, Stovall, and Stroughter line-up.

Same here 1bucfanjeff.....if Stovall can have two solid games I wouldn't expect to see Clayton starting this year again.

Ditto! I don't want anyone hurt, but I'm glad Mo and Sammie will get more snaps now. Make'em count boys.

Oh no, not Michael Clayton-LMAO

Ah relief. Now if only this could hamper his return until the end of the season...that'd be sweet. Although I never wish injury on someone, the fact is it happened and I'm just glad he's not going to play, I think we can all agree.

I hope Clayton's big contract does not allow him to return next season and they admit to another mistake and cut him. If the franchise admits that it revolves around Freeman than I think they would have to give him some better weapons to throw to. I would love to see what Freeman can do with a healthy A.B. and another playmaker or two at WR. I do think that Freeman's biggest help would be an effective running game though.

Think I just felt a universal sigh of relief from all Buc fans around the world. :) If this season is about player evaluation, well, I think Clayton has already had plenty of time to prove what he can (and can't) do. Definitely beyond time to give someone else a chance. I don't care if it's Stovall, Clark, Figurs, Stroughter or Nunn, just anybody else other than Clayton.

I would like to see Yamon Figures get some play time. We can sure use his explosive speed.

"Clayton has played in all 10 games...and has 14 catches for 204 yards and one touchdown on the season."

What an absolutely disgusting stat for a starting NFL WR. PR should've followed that stat up with how many drops he's had. It's got to be at least 7. Only a 2:1 ratio.

I bet Sabby has a similar ratio on how many solo tackles he's made and how many he's missed.

Yeah, lets see Figures before the season is over. They really need to get him on the field now that Clayton is out.........and gone hopefully.

I think we should activate two WR's and deactivate a RB.
AB knee is not that strong.
Go Bucs! You can beat these guys!

What will happen to Sto next year,i know he has'nt produced in the past (was out alot with injuries) but has done ok with the little time he got this year.I would hate to see him go next year and find out that he is finally ready to explode after someone else gets him. That will be a risky decision no matter if they keep him or let him go......maybe Stovall will have enough time and opportunities to get a new contract next year.......or prove he dont deserve one...........either way i hope we can find out this year if we need to sign him or move on......... GO STOVALL !!!!!!...........we need play makers........time to produce and lock up a spot.

Take your time,Michael. I mean it...at least 5 weeks. We want you back in time for the Pro-bowl...especially since you will no doubt be named a starter.

Due to the uncapped year ahead, the new rules allow us to cut Clayton in the off season with no cap penalties. Don't worry, he is history.

Anyone know if Anquon Boldin is going to be a free agent next year? How great would a healthy Bryant, Boldin, Stroughter, and Winslow be?

12:52pm, December 1, 2009

Jonbuc

Boldin is tied up for the next two years I believe. Maybe the Cards will finally be ready to deal? Perhaps the Gaines Adam pick?

1:08pm, December 1, 2009

Horse

Boldin has major knee problems; all the way back to FSU where he blew it out and it resulted in him changing from a QB to a WR position. I don't think he has that much in the tank left to send them a draft pick for him.

So starting Yamon Figurs, Brian Clark, or Terrance is supposed to make me feel better about our chances of winning this week? Well, I don't, not even with Clayton out. These other guys are worse.

2:01pm, December 1, 2009

I_am_not

I'd like to see if we could develop Figurs into another DeSean Jackson or Wes Welker - he's about the same size and has about the same speed plus he has experience with Freeman, a lot of experience.

2:45pm, December 1, 2009

Pttarps

Good. Maybe we'll finally have a person in the starting line up that can actually catch the ball!

3:14pm, December 1, 2009

bucfan47

I_am_not - I think that experiment has already been tried.

Yeah everyone needs to chill on the Figurs thing....Jackson and Welker are who they are because...well...they are who they are. Figurs isn't good, he's fast sure, but he has not produced anywhere he's been....including college although I don't have the stats infront of me. AT BEST I'd say he could maybe be the 5th WR or something but he's not a 'diamond in the rough'. Also Stovall, has always had intriguing skills but the injuries just won't stop and I think he's sort of coming to the end of his tenure as well, but I do agree that give him Clayton's PT the rest of the year and see what happens. If he doesn't show anything through the end of the year I think he needs to go. We need to reload with some serious WR talent, no more of these practice squad guys (Clark, Figurs...etc) and guys we've been holding on to for years WAITING for them to do SOMETHING (Clayton...Stovall).

Horse- I live in AZ, I have season tickets and follow them since I live here now, I don't know of any knee problem's you speak of for Boldin in the NFL, roin and hamstring issues no knee issues, sorry. Also, e is under contract through the 2010 season.

7:09pm, December 1, 2009

jongruden

I mean groin issues

7:09pm, December 1, 2009

JDouble

Yeah, sorry Horse but I'm with jongruden on this one. Why would knee problems cause someone to change from QB to WR? That makes no sense,

He has had his share of hamstrings and groin pulls, but that's pretty par for the course when it comes to WRs. I'd be willing to bet Boldin has another 3 to 4 solid years left in him, if not more.

It would be great to have all big physical pass catchers for the next 4 years. Bryant, Boldin, Winslow sounds pretty swell to me.

sunrisejeff

Boldin did have a major knee injury in college, was medical redshirted due to it, torn ligament. Torn meniscus in his right knee in '04.......bone contusion in his right knee in '05. Missed 3 more games in '07 with a hip injury and of course we all remember that hit that literally broke his face last year.....so the guy has had his share of injuries. All that being said he is still a hell of a talent at wideout.....however if he gets traded anywhere I honestly see it being Miami. He wants to play there and it would be a team out of the conference.
