Bucs Lose To Falcons, Finish 3-13 |

UPDATED: The Buccaneers lost their 2009 regular season finale at home to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, 20-10. Bucs rookie QB Josh Freeman threw one TD and two INTs during Tampa Bay's loss. The Falcons rushed for 183 yards led by Jason Snellings 147 yards. The Bucs finish the season with a 3-13 record.
After an impressive, two-game road-winning streak, Tampa Bay returned home to try to end the season on a high note by beating Atlanta, but the Falcons had the motivation of trying to record back-to-back winning years for the first time in franchise history and prevailed, 20-10.
The Bucs had plenty of motivation to try to save the job of rookie head coach Raheem Morris, which may be in jeopardy along with that of first-year general manager Mark Dominik, as the Glazers have reportedly met with former Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher about his interest in coaching in Tampa Bay. However, the Falcons defense and running game proved to be too much for the Buccaneers to overcome.
The Bucs tallied 52 yards at halftime and mustered only three points in the first three quarters, finishing the game with just 206 yards of offense. Cadillac Williams was held in check as he rushed for 40 yards on 19 carries.
“They won the battle up front today and they won the battle on both sides of the football,” Morris said. “We weren’t able to run the football and we weren’t able to stop it. We have to tackle better.”
Despite not having starting running back Michael Turner available on Sunday, the Falcons still amassed 397 total yards, including 183 yards rushing on 37 attempts. Jason Snelling had a career-high 147 yards on 25 carries (5.9 avg.) while quarterback Matt Ryan completed 23-of-35 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Tampa Bay’s defense was on the field for 73 snaps due to the ineffectiveness of the offense and two turnovers.
“I don’t want to ever say they wore down without looking at the tape, but obviously you’ve got to say something like that happened,” Morris said. “They had the ability to cap off that [long] drive by running the football. You have to give their coach some credit as well. I don’t want to say that Snelling just wore down the defense and I don’t want to say that our players wore down. You just have to give [the Falcons’ coaching staff] some credit for getting those guys in good run fits, getting those guys in good run plays, and giving them another chance to have some success. We missed a few tackles individually, and you have to make those. [Snelling] was able to wear us down and they won the battle up front.”
Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman struggled to find any rhythm against the Falcons, completing 16-of-32 passes for 174 yards with one touchdown and two fourth quarter interceptions that hampered the chances of Tampa Bay coming back to win.
The loss by Tampa Bay, especially with the offense and defense playing less than stellar football, puts Morris’ future as the Buccaneers coach in doubt. After the game, Morris was asked if he had received a vote of confidence from the team’s ownership group about him staying on in 2010.
“No, that’s not their job,” Morris said. “I tell you everyday you guys don’t get a vote of confidence either. You can get fired tomorrow too, but nobody’s asked me that question. I stand here and coach until I go. My mom and my pops were both laid off when I was 13 years old and nobody told them that they weren’t going to get fired. That’s just the reality of the world we live in. You deal with it. You do your job. This game is not for everybody. If I’m sitting around worried about getting fired then I’ve got my own issues. I’m not. I’m very confident in what I do.”
Neither the Glazers nor Dominik were available after the game for comment. The notoriously secret Glazers waited three weeks to fire Jon Gruden last year and didn’t speak publicly on their decision until January 16. However, one has to believe that the fate of Morris and Dominik will be known sooner rather than later, especially with Cowher in the mix.
Things got started off on the right foot for Tampa Bay. Free safety Tanard Jackson forced a fumble on the opening kickoff when he drilled Falcons return man Eric Weems. Kareem Huggins recovered the ball for the Buccaneers at the Atlanta 28-yard line. However, the Bucs lost two yards on the drive and had to settle for a 48-yard field goal from Connor Barth. With 13:27 left in the first quarter, Tampa Bay took a 3-0 lead.
The Falcons tied the game in the second quarter after moving 53 yards in eight plays. The big play on the drive was a defensive holding call on cornerback Ronde Barber, who intercepted Ryan on third-and-3 off a flea flicker pass. Televised replays showed that the call was rather dubious, but nonetheless it kept the drive moving. The drive stalled on the Tampa Bay 18 after the Falcons could not pick up the necessary two yards on two downs. Former Bucs kicker Matt Bryant drilled a 36-yard field goal for the Falcons with 4:09 left in the second quarter to knot the game at 3-3.
Atlanta took the lead in dramatic fashion on its last possession before halftime. The Falcons marched 53 yards in eight plays. Ryan was 5-of-5 for 52 yards on the drive. Strong safety Sabby Piscitelli was victimized twice on the drive. On first-and-10 from the Tampa Bay 12, Piscitelli was flagged for pass interference on tight end Tony Gonzalez. That set up the Falcons with a first-and-goal on the 1-yard line. After two runs lost one yard, Ryan threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Justin Peele as time expired in the first half. Piscitelli was lost in coverage and Peele was open just inside the goal line on the right side of the field for the score.
After backup safety Corey Lynch blocked Bryant’s 40-yard field goal attempt at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bucs drove 70 yards in 11 plays to tie the game. The drive started with an 11-yard reception from tight end Kellen Winslow and a 14-yard catch by Jerramy Stevens. Williams ripped off two runs for eight yards before catching a 6-yard pass to move the chains on third-and-2 from the Atlanta 39. On second-and-8 from the 33, Freeman hit Maurice Stovall with a 27-yard pass down to the Atlanta 4. After a loss of four yards on first down when Freeman tripped after the snap, he zipped a pass to Bryant, who had cornerback Christopher Owens draped all over him in the right back corner of the end zone on third-and-goal from the Atlanta 8. With 11:34 left in the fourth quarter, the score was tied 10-10.
On third-and-2 from the Atlanta 38, Ryan’s pass to Gonzalez was picked off by Piscitelli at the Falcons’ 43. During the play, cornerback Aqib Talib was flagged for unnecessary roughness, which moved the ball back to the Tampa Bay 45. On the next play, Freeman’s pass was intercepted by Owens at the Atlanta 43. The ball was returned to the Tampa Bay 44.
The Falcons would make the Buccaneers pay for that turnover as they marched 44 yards in five plays to reclaim the lead. Snelling ran the ball four straight times for 32 yards, including a 22-yarder down to the Tampa Bay 16. On third-and-6 from the 12, Ryan found White for a 12-yard touchdown pass as Talib was inches away of deflecting the ball. With 7:18 left in the fourth quarter, the Falcons led the Bucs 17-10.
Tampa Bay drove 45 yards down to the Atlanta 35 yard after passes to Williams, Winslow and Gilmore picked up a combined 34 yards. However on first-and-10, Freeman’s pass to Bryant in the end zone was intercepted by Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes. That play ignited a nine-play, 62-yard drive that resulted in a 36-yard field goal from Bryant. With 1:00 left in regulation, the Falcons led 20-10. Snelling rushed for 52 yards on seven straight carries on the final drive to get into field goal position as Tampa Bay’s defense wore down.
PEWTERREPORT.COM PLAYER OF THE GAME
There were not many shining stars for Tampa Bay in its 20-10 loss to Atlanta, but free safety Tanard Jackson had a fine game, notching five tackles, two passes defensed, an interception and a forced fumble on the opening kickoff. The interception was Jackson’s fifth of the year, which is a career high and ties Aqib Talib for the team lead. Jackson’s interception in the third quarter stymied an Atlanta drive and his forced fumble led to the Bucs’ opening field goal.
“It was a huge play in the game to try and get some momentum swung in our direction to open up the second half,” Jackson said. “I was just trying to make a play and help this team get its fourth victory and end the season strong. Obviously it didn’t happen. I think our guys played hard. It’s tough to go down this way but we can’t carry this into the offseason. We have a lot to look forward to.”
For his efforts, Jackson is this week’s PewterReport.com Player of the Game.
IT WAS OVER WHEN…
Tampa Bay was trailing Atlanta 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter when rookie quarterback Josh Freeman had the Bucs on the march. Starting at their own 20-yard line, the Bucs moved the ball down to the Atlanta 35-yard line before Freeman threw an interception to cornerback Brent Grimes, who had blanketed Antonio Bryant in the end zone. Instead of tying the score at 17-17, the Bucs turned the ball over to the Falcons with 4:24 left in regulation and that ended all hope of a comeback – especially when Matt Bryant drilled a 36-yard field goal to put Atlanta up by 10 points with 1:00 left in regulation.
STATS THAT COUNT
Bucs linebacker Geno Hayes recorded his third career sack when he dropped Matt Ryan in the second quarter. Hayes has now notched a sack in three straight games. … Kicker Connor Barth made his sixth field goal in a row when he banged in a 48-yarder to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. … Safety Corey Lynch blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt by Matt Ryan. The block was Tampa Bay’s sixth this year (two field goals, two punts and two extra points), which was the second-most in team history, and Lynch’s second. Lynch also blocked a punt at Atlanta earlier in the season. … Josh Freeman set a Bucs rookie record with his 10th touchdown pass of the season when he hit Antonio Bryant in the end zone to tie the score at 10-10 in the fourth quarter. Bruce Gradkowski held the previous record of nine touchdown passes in 2006. … Running back Cadillac Williams finished the season with 1,040 all-purpose yards, including a team-high 821 yards rushing – the most since his rookie season – after coming back from two season-ending knee injuries. Williams, who played in all 16 games in a season for the first time in his career, scored four rushing touchdowns and had a career-high three receiving scores. … Tampa Bay set a new franchise record for the most kickoff return yards in team history with 1,623 yards on 62 kickoff returns. The previous record was 1,622 yards and was set in 1985. The Bucs’ 26.2-yard average was also the best in team history, surpassing the 24.8-yard average set in 2008. … Cornerback Ronde Barber has now passed left tackle Paul Gruber for the second-most starts in team history. Gruber and Barber were tied with 183 starts coming into today’s game before Barber taking the lead. Derrick Brooks has the most starts in team history with 221. … Strong safety Sabby Piscitelli recorded his second interception of the year and the fourth of his career on Sunday. … Middle linebacker Barrett Ruud led all tacklers with 17 stops on Sunday. Ruud finished the season with a career-high 202 tackles. … Weakside linebacker Geno Hayes finished the Falcons game with 12 tackles, which gives him a career-high 134 tackles to finish the season. … Shawn Murphy saw action in his first NFL game on Sunday when he replaced Jeremy Zuttah at left guard.

The Glazer's have a big decision to make; either spend it on players, or a new coach. If you don't then there will be more empty seats out there that you have ever seen before. You have got to show the fans that you really do want a winning team and that it is not all about the money.
Go Bucs! Let's have a good productive off season in making every player better for 2010 season.

This team was extremely competitive the last quarter of the season once Raheem had the OC he wanted (Olson), the DC he wanted (himself) and the QB he wanted (Freeman). They showed tremendous progress and fight.
With FA, the draft and another offseason under their belt this team will be .500+ next year and I'm excited to see it. Letting Raheem go would only start another period of chaos for us to make our way through and I don't think the fans will pay their hard-earned money for that, no matter what the coach's name happens to be.

After the Seattle win, I said the Bucs would need to play competitive against New Orleans and beat Atlanta for Morris to return. They played competitively against New Orleans and even beat them, but then they come home and lay an egg. Atlanta was a beatable team and if the Bucs had truely turned the corner, they would have been able to win that game.

Offensively, we do need to keep AB and get another speed receiver, along with another O lineman to take Truebloods spot and possibly Zuttahs. Hopefully that is Sears!

The same goes for Dominik, he has made some bad decisions(Nugent, Clayton, etc.), but he does have an eye for talent. He hit on most of the draft picks and the Winslow trade. I mean who ever heard of Tim Crowder before the Bucs picked him up. I'm not saying he's great, but in rotation with some decent NTs he's got upside. He had to do the "bad guy" work in releasing our beloved veterans(Brooks, Galloway, Ike) and rebuild this team. A bad year this year, but what did we expect?
If they can hit on 5 of their 10 picks, sprinkle in a couple impact FAs, and let Raheem/Dominik grow into their jobs, the future doesn't seem bleek,at all. We have our QB of the future and we have awesome draft position. Make it happen!
I had fun on here this season even though we sucked, we'll get em next year! Go Bucs!

Please stop with the continuity thing as well. Not sure Olson is a good enough OC. I hope he does not stunt the growth of Freeman.
Freeman looks like he has talent. He makes mistakes. I really wish the owners would get good experienced coaches in there to see what Freeman could become.
Unless the owners plan on spending money in for FA, I do not believe Morris, Olson, Dominik can get it done. This group will not bring us more than 6 wins in a season and they will end up fired in a year or two anyway. Then where will Freeman be.
Bringing back AB for his money is a mistake. He is hurt alot. The guy has talent and makes some real nice catches once or twice a game but he seems problematic. He expects too much money for his level of production. I would much rather give that money to another high quality player. Stop tying down this team with bad contracts (Clayton).
Looking forward to the draft and hope like hell Morris and Dominik don't screw it up. Hope Suh (yeah right) or McCoy are avail with our first pick. I would rather go defense with the first four picks. Rookie WR rarely make an impact and I would rather they sign a big name WR (using AB's money).
Would not like Berry as a top pick but just may be worth it to see Piscatelli sit.

They deserve 1 year for drafting Freeman alone. The Bucs have a guy to be their quarterback of the future, (I know I'm gonna hear it from 47, Jdouble, and jongruden)something the Bucs have never been able to do. He has his faults, but has performed pretty darn well, considering the lack of reps in the preseason. He doesn't get down on himself after a mistake and is not afraid to get in a teammate's face if they make one. With a qb coach and an OC I think he will be a player the Bucs can count on for the next 10 years.

The press in this town desperately wants Morris to succeed, if only because he is not Gruden. Gruden was guilty of 2 sins in this town. One, he was not Tony Dungy and two, he won too soon. While many people still love to say that he won with Dungy's team, the sad part about it is that Dungy couldn't win with Dungy's team. The offense was horrible and another year would not have made a difference. No, it took Gruden coming in, adding players and calling an aggressive offence to make the difference. That only made the press and sport show callers mad. Now they have Dungy/McKay redux and they desperately want it to work. The problem is I've lost interest and hope that things will get better anytime in the next 3 years. No one on staff is under contract beyond next year and with the possibility of a lock out the year after next the Glazers are not going to put a new staff under contract that they'll have to pay for if there is a lockout. This current front office of losers is so clueless that they thought they had the players this year to win. They also thought they had a great offensive coordinator and an even greater defensive coordinator. They gave a boatload of money to Ward and Nugent and went out and got that statue, Leftwich to "compete" for the starting job. This whole season has been a waste and now that it is done there can be no doubt, This was the worst season by the Bucs in over 15 years and it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon. After another season of "sellouts" at the RayJay, I bet the Glazers raise prices yet again. And Fantasy land continues in Tampa Bay.

1. Raheem should stay - They wanted a youth movement, this includes the coach and the GM . . .In my mind all rookies need a year to develop before showing thier promise . . .same is true of the GM and the Coach. Along these lines with a new coach comes a new system . . .no continuity . . .and no growth until 2011 at best.
2. The one thing Raheem and Mark D have done well is draft . . .In fact I would say they have done better then Gruden and Bruce A . . . .This year will be a huge draft for the bucs . . a coaching system change could put this in jeopardy.
3. There is some great young talent on this team . . .I have been impressed with Freeman, Talib, Jackson, Straughter, and of course Caddy. In addition some of the other young players have shown a lot of improvement as well.
4. On the down side I would say I have been most disappointed in the O line . . . .Although i should give them a bit of a break in that they switched run philosophies mid season. In my mind this group . ..with their draft status . .. should be a go to strength of this team . .and they have not yet been anything close.
5. Lastly I have been disappointed in the glazers . . . The 2nd highest prices in the NFL? Why have we been so far under the cap for the last 2-3 years when we need talent? Why would you make a commitment to an up and comming coach . .just to kill your credibility by either going with a new coach or just starting those rummors. Owners should be helping the team to improve . . .not putting up obsticals to success . . .come on now Glazers!
Lastly - Go Bucs - You really put it out there with your effort this year. Keep up the work, and the improvements!

I think Morris is going to get this team more wins next year than any other head coach could that is going to be available this offseason. I then believe he will continue to keep the team competitive in the years to come with the help of Dominik who I think has done a good job overall given what has to work with.
It's as simple as that. I won't drag this out now because I'm sure this will be a much discussed topic over the next few weeks.

Cam Cameron won 1 game his first season and his first 2 draft picks sucked tremendously that year. Morris won 3 games and was a Peanut fumble in Washington and a batted pass in Atlanta away from winning 5.
The first two picks we made appear to be good ones. Also, I don't think Mangini will be fired. They won today.

The bottom line in Morris has put this team in much better shape for next year than Cameron did at the end of his first season.

We can't judge a coach (or players) with one year. Marinelli was fired because he's got 0 win. We have 3 ... it makes a huge difference. It means the team has improved. Not enough but it was part of the plan : it's called REBUILDING.
charbeth2, you're a joke. Freeman has been a disaster ??? Considering the lack of reps during off season, no run and OL support, he's done very well. You said he's made mistakes ... what a big deal !!! HE'S A ROOKIE !!! GIVE US A BREAK
I don't say he's for real, I just say he's shown good things and has big upside ...

No pewterpirate, you cannot judge a coach by one season. You could name 100 coaches, I don't care, you need at least 2 yrs. Each situation is different, but with ours, the owners wanted to take this direction so we did. To fire the coach and\or GM that carried out your plan is horribly wrong. As a fan, I want to see if we make progress next year, draft picks, record, coaching, etc. I'll be one of the first ones calling for Raheem's job if he doesn't work out NEXT YEAR. It is unfair for me to want to fire him now, I can't compare him to last year.

My main concern is the Glazers. If they are having financial problems and cant spend the Bucks in FA and the draft, we could be in for another long season. Coaching will come around, but without the talent we are a small market team and could have many rough seasons ahead. If the Glazers give Morris and Dominik the players, this team will improve. Winning will bring the fans back, and restore negativity which this losing season has generated.
Of course I don't profess to be an expert and it would not surprise me if sometime next week Morris and company are replaced. I hope that is not the case but I was surprised (Not disappointed) when Gruden and company were let go.

I think our biggest needs are a burner at wide receiver and obviously an impact player on the defensive line.
Dominick deserves alot of credit for the Adams trade but if he is to be held responsible for the decision-making this year, as he should be, then he needs to be fired. But I doubt he will be he's really just a yes-man to the Glaziers and he comes cheap.
And I still don't see why you people are slobbering over Freeman. Yes he's athletic and has a strong arm but the most important qualities of a good quarterback he doesn't possess, his accuracy is below average and his decision making has not improved at all this year. Granted he has been poorly coached.
As we say goodbye to a very ugly season I just want to remind everybody. that it's the Glaziers lack of commitment to winning over the past five years, that has landed us at the bottom of the NFL barrel.

Did anyone see any improvement week to week? I saw the same misakes being made all season long.. Yeah the D got better and changing schemes was a stupid idea to begin wih...and who's idea was that...exactly
At least they finally started to use Freeman in short yardage...we have only begged for it all seson...haha

Dispite all of this, he has looked like the golden child at times this year. He has flashed rare ability, pushed off would be tacklers, and made amazing throws. He has shown he has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.
Of course he has struggled as well. He has thrown stupid Ints, innaccurate passes, and fumbled the ball quite a few times. If this was all we'd seen, I'd be worried as well, but it's not all we've seen. Unfortunetly alot of you have such short memories that you scream "BUST" as soon as he looks like a rookie. As if he didn't do any thing well this year. As if he will never improve from his first 9 games on a bad team as a 21 year old rookie. It's as if some of you just want him to fail so you can say I told you so.

Raheem will be back next year. All we need to do is see that the stars have all aligned.
First, we don't know that both coordinators were his decision. We have heard from Coach that he wanted Olsen to get the OC job. That should lead us to believe he did not at least choose the OC, but probably agreed to it. He made the call for change and it imporved the team. We heard the players confirm there was a problem.
His second decision to take over as DC was also the right decision. The statistics show a dramatic turn around since he began calling the plays. The fact that both sides of the ball did not have an off-season or preseason to get comfortable with the changes had to contribute to less points on O and more points on D. If the eary preparation was not important then the teams would not require players to participate.
Regardless, those are not the reasons Raheem wil return next year.
There is an overwelming possibility there is going to be a lockout in 2011. There is only one group of NFL personnel that is paid even in the event of a lockout. That is the coaching staff.
Have the Glazers demonstrated any commitment to spending the needed money to upgrade this team over the past 5 years? All of the published reports this year have stated their lack of financial support. They most certainly would not want to pay a top tier coach to sit around for 2011 without any revenue to offset this out of pocket expense.
If we need another hint at what the Glazers plan to do next year we only need to look athe the resigning of Doug Williams. Is it a coincidence that the extension was for only one year and expires before the 2011 season?
It is a sound business decision that Raheem is not going anywhere. The Glazers will see to that. Afterall, at the end of the day they are shrewd business men.

Why the hell are we passing the ball so much? We got two good backs left (I think Ward is still alive) and we always want Freeman in the shotgun....if it is for his development fine but at least put him in position to succeed. Not enough ground work and play actions passing this season IMO.

I'm even ok with Olsen as OC again. He hasn't done so good this year, but it is so important for a young QB to have stability. Olsen took over a strange situation and was forced to run a hybrid of Jags playbook while working in some of his own plays. I'm curious to see what he can do next year when he's running exactly what he wants to, and has an entire off season to get the offense on board. Hopefully we have some new weapons as well.
My big hope is that we get a solid defense coordinator in here that can help Rheem run the defense. If the Bears clean house, I'd love for us to grab Lovie and/or Marinelli.
Also, I hope we get a good quality QBs coach for Freeman. Maybe pay an actual ex-QB to come in and work with him or something. Just make sure we don't have Olsen playing QB coach and OC again.
