Ownership Confirms Morris Will Remain Head Coach In Tampa Bay |
![]() Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris' team went 3-13 in 2009 (Cliff Welch) |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris will remain the team's head coach in 2010. Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer confirmed the news in a statement released late Monday night. Morris went 3-13 in his first season as Tampa Bay's head coach.
That news was confirmed in a statement released by Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer late Monday night.
"We are committed to the plan that we began 12 months ago with Coach Morris, and we look forward to building on the pieces that were put in place this season," said Glazer.
The Bucs went 3-13 during the 2009 regular season, which was Morris' first on the job. He fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski 10 days before the regular season started and demoted defensive coordinator Jim Bates midway through the season. Tampa Bay's offense and defense finished the season ranked 28th and 27th, respectively.
Morris remains the NFL's youngest head coach and avoids the fate suffered by the last head coach to go 3-13 in Tampa Bay (Richard Williamson - 1991).
One part of the original report stated the Bucs coaching staff would coach a team in the Senior Bowl later this month. However, Bucs officials denied that report, which came from 620 WDAE host Steve Duemig, on Monday night.
The report regarding ownership's decision to retain Morris comes just hours after ESPN reported that former Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher likely would remain retired. It was reported a few weeks ago by NFL.com that the Bucs had contacted Cowher in December regarding possibly coaching the team in 2010.
Morris, 33, became the youngest head coach in the National Football League when he was promoted one year ago to replace Jon Gruden, the franchise's all-time winningest head coach.
The Bucs promoted Morris several times during his seven-year tenure with the organization. Morris spent seven of the past eight seasons with the Bucs.
Morris originally joined the Bucs in 2002 as a defensive quality control coach, working under then-defensive backs coach Mike Tomlin, who currently is the head coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After helping the Bucs win Super Bowl XXXVII, Morris was promoted to defensive assistant in 2003 and to assistant defensive backs coach in 2005.
In 2006, Morris left Tampa Bay to become the defensive coordinator at Kansas State. During his absence, the Bucs' secondary fell apart, which prompted the team to fire Greg Burns and lure Morris back to Tampa Bay to serve as the defensive backs coach. The Bucs' play against the pass dramatically improved with Morris' return, going from 19th in 2006 to 1st in the NFL in '07.
Shortly after former Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin announced he was leaving the franchise for the Tennessee Volunteers near the end of the 2008 season, Morris was named Kiffin's successor. He was promoted to head coach a few weeks later after Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen were fired on Jan 16, 2009.
Morris signed a four-year contract that included a team option after two years following the dismissal of Gruden. Unless he takes a job elsewhere in the NFL, Morris will be on Tampa Bay's books for about $900,000 in 2010. Gruden still is owed approximately $5 million per year in 2010 and 2011 unless he takes a coaching job in the NFL. He currently serves as an analyst for ESPN.

Those practices with the coaches are so valuable. You find out what kind of heart those players have and you can't find out that kind of stuff in an interview. I just hope we have our new position coaches in place by then.

If ownership will take a few radical steps like lowering prices in 2010, and spending some money on free agents worth bringing to Tampa, they will be rewarded with more fans in the seats, including me.

As far as Rheem getting his 2nd year, I'm happy. I'm not going to argue with anyone about all the mistakes made this year and who was responsible. The facts are Rheem is a better coach now than he was at the beginning of the season. He has this team believing they can win and playing hard. He deserves a real chance to show what he can do.
Also, even though Cowher is probably my favorite coach after Dungy...I'm not ready to give up on our guys. Rheem, Dom, even Olsen are our guys. They have been around this organization for years and carry on our history. I'd much rather see us attain greatness our way with our guys. Running an evovled Tampa Two and watching Freeman develope into a great QB...rather than some outsiders coming in here, some other team's old hero, changing everything from the ground up. Let's atleast give our guys a chance to get this thing going again...our way.
Go Bucs!

Sorry, I remember all those years of losing. I know what that crap looks like and what I saw this year was vintage 1980's.
It's all about money with the Glazers. They're draining the life out of this team. This is Culverhouse 2.0. I'd rather have Daniel Snyder -- at least he's not satisfied with losing.
Prediction: AB won't be back next season because they won't pay him. You watch, they'll make it look like AB wanted a fortune, but don't believe it. So, the Bucs will go into next season with an even weaker WR corp. Yea, that's going to help Freeman. God help us!

Oh well. Just showing their true knowledge of the game I guess.
A question for PR or anybody else that may know. The compensatory picks begin at the end of the 3rd round. Your provided a comp pick by the league based off of certain criteria. Are the Bucs in position to gain any comp picks based off of some player losses this year?

How many of you are now going to say I dont know anything about football?

On a side note watching the Fiesta Bowl right now and I REALLY like this kid Kyle Wilson, CB for BSU. Listed at 5'10, 190lbs but seems to play greatzone coverage and nearly took the TCU's QB's head off on a blitz. Projected 3rd rounder.

Maybe we can find the Water Boy at linebacker from South West Mud Ass State and not play him like Gruden did cat -o -lack. we could use an upgrade there or at least some quality H2O!
On a more serious note....I think we need a clean break from the past and should consider a uniform change...nothing major....tweek the colors and the design a bit....get more fashionable....I would either recommend the old TB Storm zebra pants...in Pewter and Red of course....MC Hammer pants.....or a big sleeved pirate shirt.
you see...we are completely irrelavent right now...you only become relavent 3 ways....(1) you suck so bad everyone talks about how bad you suck every week; (2) you are so good that everyone talks about that; (3) or there is something different about your team ....two headed QB...and one of the heads speaks a different lanquage; you have Manute Bol as your third down RB....or the biggest loser ...loser...the one that didnt loose the weight....carries snacks out to the team during time outs.......Given I dont want to see #1.....and we are a few years away from #2......and as much as I would like to see #3...I vote for Hammer pants and maybe the pirate shirt....until we get good again.....we will become instantly relavent! Our current personel needs to be pared down to those who will be contributing in 2010. Get rid of the dead wood. I mean they are good guys, but we need to up-grade. Start with Clayton, Hovan, Ryan Simms, and seriously folks maybe even Sabby, and Trueblood!
Draft well and best athlete available. I mean we have needs everywhere if not for starters, some solid back-ups. At number 3 pick its a win-win position. No trading up that's for sure. We'll take what's there at 3. If it goes Oh first at DT, McCoy 2nd at DT, then we take Berry out of Tennesse. With Berry, Tanard, and Talib as DBs we will be set for 5-6 years! Don't lose any picks to trade up. I would like to use both #2s for some soild picks. Maybe a Spikes from Florida, or a Spiller(RB) from Clemson! With a solid draft AND the Glazers opening of the checkbook for some quality free agents combined with a maturing Freeman at QB it makes me excited about the team's potential. You know what, now that i'm thinking about it... just let Antonio Bryant go. He clearly is our ace WR, BUT he is always injured and a bit of a malcontent. If he gives us the hometeam discount, he stays! If he wants 30mil or so over 5 years, can't help you dude. Your outta here! But, you must replace him with a bonifide #1 WR for Freeman to throw to. He can't sling it to K2 all of the time! That's a start, anybody got any thoughts or reactions? Last thing, I'm real worried about Rheem doing double duties as Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. He does a great job with the Defense, its just that as a young coach you really need to oversee the entire team, special teams, offense, defense, and personel. I think it must be really hard as a young coach to have a Coordinator/ Head Coach position. Maybe get Jimmy Lake back here or Marinelli to coach the defense under the watchful eye of Morris... i'm just saying!

Although not a fan of Freeman pick at first, he might be good BUT he has to have good players to throw to.
If Raheem is staying for 2010, Raheem needs to say less and do more. He thinks he needs to rattle off sentences to impress, but it's annoying.
We learned that we would have been better off if Raheem stayed at DC for a year or 2. However, now that he's coach, it'd be hard to step down and stay on as only DC.
unfortunately, we'd be lucky if we win 6 games next year.

Antonio Bryant... with Kelly Campbell and Sammie Stroughter on Injured Reserve! That's pretty sad. Antonio Bryant is the key to this staff. With him we need a little WR help, without him we need major help. I say we keep: Spurlock, Stovall, Stroughter, and AB if he gives us that hometeam discount. Without AB we need some experienced free agents to round out the staff and a #1 to replace AB if he leaves. I'm just saying...

re-signing Clayton for 5yr 25 million was the dumbest move, given what we knew going in. If someone told Clayton would finish with 16 catches and 1 td, would you be surprised? Not me. He must be cut this off-season. If we go through another pre-season of how things have changed and how he's going to light it up, then jokes on us ----again.

we are all just going to have to be a little patient here....we will have to build from the draft. that or go back and get some of the great talent that Gruden chased out of town and given them a second chance...Semion RIce; Jeff Garcia; Chris Simms; Mike Pittman; Bruce Gradkowski; Keshawn; Todd Steusie......YIKES....how did we make the playoffs those years!
we get a good draft.....get rid of some dead wood (about 14 of 22 starters) and its all good. Piscitelli needs to go....I heard he was going to open up his own restaurant but couldn't spell his last name and he didnt think a bar and grill called "good eats" would sell....so he's coming back for another year as the guy you always see trailing the highlight reel play.

Let's look optimistically towards free agents and then the draft. With a solid outing from each, we could end up with 5-8 new starts. With possibly 3-4 being new difference makers.

But... this is the right move by the Glazers. The Bucs are not an aging roster of washed up vets with no chance of improving. They are a young team with some promising players with a slew of draft picks and cap room.
But - as someone stated above - free agency is not where this team will turn things around. That rests solely with the draft. List all of the Buc legends of the past 15 years. Outside of Simeon and Hardy (and even a pass to Brad Johnson) all the truly great buc players have come via the draft: Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, Ronde, Alstott, etc...
Outside of Winslow, Faine, and (maybe) AB, all of the promising players on the roster (TJack, Talib, ruud, Hayes, Freeman, Stroughter, etc...) have come through the draft as well.
The fate of this franchise rests in 11 decisions that will be made in April.

Who was the idiot who fired all the veterans again?
Well we need some - really good ones. We need to get some prime drafts and trade up for some winning personalities - leaders.
Someone needs to smack freeman upside the head before every game - make him mad (or he needs to watch 'the waterboy') to activate him (just like that one hit did in Seattle that lasted through New orleans game).
Raheem will learn. he just needs to stop trying so hard and drop that 'real men' tough guy nonsense. (what a joke) He should maximize his personality.
Anyways.... plenty more observations from my 2 cents but that's it for now

Rebuilding is rebuilding, across the board. Now, if the Glazers truly aren't going to spend money, then we're hosed. So far, I'm not sure that's what I've seen - I've seen money committed in the form of contracts, its just been spent badly. I see an overreaction, perhaps, to Gruden/Allen and the way they did things.
Perhaps more than one season of patience is in order. Perhaps some continuity with the youngsters as this young team is built would be helpful. Or, we just start over every year, as this model seems to be doing wonders for Detroit, Cleveland the Raiders.

It was refreshing to read your posts accepting as Rhonde would say, "it is what it is." One doesn't have to "drink the kool-aid" to be supportive and hope for the best of things we can't change. It doesn't mean we are blind to the multitude of poor decisions.
No one liked the results of this past season and no one finds anything short of play-offs as acceptable. But, I did believe there was enough of an improvement to warrant another year with this time having the benefit of the OTA's , training camp and stability with the staff.
It had to be tough for Morris to take on this daunting task thinking he could at least count on two experienced coordinators who were such a disappointment. What I liked is that he showed no hesitation in firing their ass. That reservation/loyalty of Dungy and his slew of inept offensive coordinators cost him his job.
Time to move on to what should prove to be an entertaining off-season.

FLBoyInDallas- I'm pretty sure I remember reading a while back that Olsen was given a contract for '09 & '10 to be the offensive coordinator once he took over for Jagz. It was never really reported too much, but I'm fairly certain that was the case.
As for the FA list above, most of those guys are going to be restricted because there hasn't been an agreement on the new CBA. Brandon Marshall is in that boat as well as a couple other guys. Therefore, free agency may be a little tougher this year, which means we need to keep AB, even though I can't stand his effort when he has to battle a CB for a ball.

I'm glad Morris is returning, he deserves as much. Let us not forget the Owners had there hands in this years rebuilding project more than Raheem or Mark - they followed orders.
Now on to free agency and the draft. However we do it, DL must be #1 priority, WR opposite AB (re-sign him) should be #2. Teams only respected AB by sliding the safety to his side because we didn't have anybody else that scared them.

Bringing Rah back was really the only option. All of the mistakes from 2009 are sunk costs. We can't get them back and there's no real better option out there. I was not a fan of hiring him but you can't argue with his ability to get the players to play hard which, if we'll all remember, was the big question mark at this time last year after we faded down the stretch.
Trade up and get Suh. Then make a 3 more impact picks + maybe 2 good free agents and 2010 looks promising.

If we could swap first round picks with Denver, pointwise it would equal to the 18th pick of the first round. We would get a great reciever in Marshall and could still take a top DT at 10, while the Broncos could take Dez Bryant and immediatly replace Marshal. They might even be interested in one of the top two QBs. I don't think Orton is the QB McDaniels wants to bet his coaching career on.
Anyways, if we can work out any trade where we swap 1st round picks and pick up Boldin or Marshal, I think it would be awesome.

You are an assho** of major proportions.
You people who wanted Ra fired make no sense what-so-ever. The guy was given a REBUILDING football team. New OC, DC, new players, young players, rookie QB, new schemes, etc... No one expected the playoffs. It was a learning, evaluating season.
I do not know if Raheem will be a great coach one day, he might not be or he might be, but at the very least, he deserves this offseason and next year (at least several games into it) to show the direction and improvement of this young team. If he can't do it, then fire him.
But you don't do it now.
It is the ADHD mentatlity of you losers. With your mentality you would have fired Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, and many other great coaches.

Marshall? I would take him but we have to sign AB too. We need 2 good WR's. That limits double teams and creates mismatches.
The problem with any FA's is the CBA. 212 players could become unrestricted FA's if the CBA is extended. Otherwise they are restricted.

STOP SAYING WE ARE GOING TO TRADE SABI AND CLAYTON TO HELP US MOVE UP TO GRAB SUH. Both of these players are garbage and amount to heavily overpriced 5th round picks.
Ownership is not going to trade up to draft Suh because they don't want to have to pay $20 MILLION more in guaranteed money. The Clausen injury news further increases Bradford's value and, with a good combine, teams will at least offer up something to Dominik to move up and swap picks.
This team has so many needs you can't give up a top 50 pick. IT DEMONSTRATES HOW SHORTSIGHTED SOME OF THESE BLOGGERS ARE. Part of the reason the bucs suck right now is because we gave up so many picks for Gruden and Keyshawn. DOES NO ONE REMEMBER THIS. 2x first rounders and 2x second rounders for gruden and 2x first rounders for Keyshawn. You build through the draft period and hoard your picks.

cremdonado - I agree with you, except we have a ways to go before we can aspire to mediocre.
drt1066 - Apparently more than you who is willing to settle for more of the same.
Louie - I'm with you, this smells suspiciously of Culverhouse and Richard Williamson.
sunrisejeff - Finally, someone with some brains who knows what these boards are all about.
ILoveMeSomeFire - I love you lecturing people about being so mature and then you go on in your next posts to show how immature you are. Hilarious.
OK These are my 2 cents worth, which is all it's worth since none of us are owners and coaches and clearly what the fans think doesn't matter to them. This comes as no surprise. With a possible lock-out in 2011 and already owing Gruden a ton of money, the Glazers were not going to sign a multiyear contract to a coaching staff that would be guaranteed even if there is no football two years from now. The current coaching staff is only under contract for one more year so the owners lose nothing if they bomb next year. The owners showed this year that they don't care if the stadium is half empty because there were no blackouts because technically all the games were sellouts. Culverhouse helped engineer revenue sharing to make sure that it doesn't matter if stadiums are empty, the owners still make their money.
Because it is all about money and the Bucs have so many needs, I would be stunned if the Bucs trade up to get Suh. In fact, it's more likely that they trade down to get more draft picks and to avoid the big price tag that goes with a top 3 selection when there is no guarantee they will pan out.
While everyone is conviced that Gruden and Allen made decisions in a vacuum, you only need to go back and read old articles on PR from previous drafts that showed that it was collective effort and they depended heavily on the evaluations of the scouting department. Those people are still there and are headed up by Dennis Hickey. Remember the interview with him last Spring? He never answered a single question and he deflected responsibility for bad drafts. Yet he is the one evaluation talent and making the recomendations to Dummynick and RahRah Fast-Talker.
Bottom line is that it is what it is. Rah is still the coach and the good news is that he couldn't possibly make as many boneheaded moves as he did this year. Let's see how well he does next year.
Finally, the Bucs are my team win or lose. I will be in the stands cheering them on and supporting them. However, I reserve the right to complain when they make stupid mistakes.

The Glazers say they have a plan. The plan is to be as cheap as possible. With no cap next year that means no floor either. Watch out for the free fall!
It really sucks having the worse owners in the league.
To all the fans out there with high hopes, I feel sorry for all you pinheads. You actually believe in the bullcrap being handed down by the Glazers. Go ahead with your wishful thinking and oh by the way I have some real nice property for sale in the Everglades.

Maybe we haven't spent alot because we have drafted shitty players that don't deserve big contract extensions?

I basically have nothing to add to support your argument that they aren't being cheap for the sake of being cheap, except to say they even allowed the mediocre Clayton to get another healthy contract. I don't think the Glazers are big spenders, but they aren't being cheap just to be greedy either. I just think they're wise spenders, which is how their family got rich in the first place.
