Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry is a candidate to become the Tennessee Volunteers' new defensive coordinator, according to several published reports.

The Volunteers are looking to replace Monte Kiffin, who left Tennessee with his son Lane to work for USC a few weeks ago. New Volunteeers head coach Derek Dooley has reportedly contacted Barry about the opportunity.

"I really didn't know coach Dooley from the Man in the Moon until he called,'' Barry told the St. Petersburg Times. "But he said he really liked what Monte did on defense there at Tennessee and wanted to continue it. He said through all his research, my name was the one that kept coming up.''

Barry re-joined the Bucs last year after a two-year stint as the defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions. He originally joined the Bucs in 2001.

Even if he's officially offered the job, there's a chance the Buccaneers would not allow Barry to leave for Tennessee since he still is under contract with the team.

"Of course, I'm very interested,'' Barry told the Times. "Yes, it's college football. But you're talking about the chance to be a defensive coordinator at a big-time program like Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference. It would be a good opportunity. We'll see what happens.''

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Mark Dominik are in the process of attempting to hire a new wide receivers coach and a new quarterbacks coach. They hope to fill both roles before heading to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. next week.

Good news for me either way. I think it's a good fit.

NO PROBLEM name him the BUC'S defensive coordinator, we dont have one and still Raheem can call the plays.

Not sure why he was even brought back to Tampa after sulking when he couldn't initially join the Lions' debacle. I say "take good care" and bring your 3-29 over the past 2 seasons record with you!

I think he should be retained. He understands the system. I think he should be the DC on paper, act as Raheem's assistant. Just my thought.

Why do you shmo's believe that Joe Barry wants to stay in Tampa to be the Defensive Coordinator tin in title only but have no control or play calling responsibilities.

DEEZ NUTS

Yeah, Berry for D.C will work as good as it did in Detroit. He's nothing more than a position coach at best

Here is an idea. Why dont the Glazers bring a few of thier older players who won a superbowl for them to be position coaches? Kennan Mcardell to coach WRs Brad Johnson to coach QBs and Derrick Brooks to coach LBs ect. ect. That would please everybody. The Players would work with Buccaneer icons, the Glazers would pinch a few pennies, and the fans would be happy, because it would be more effective than hiring most position coaches currently in the market.

A disappointment because our line backers were awesome other than the fact that Rudd is not a powerful enough to stop the run. Russ is an awesome sideline to sideline LB with speed, awareness and the ability to make tackles, but that is not Barrys fault.

Actually, if you can remember the 2008 season Ruud was a great splash player. He had all the stats, sacks , tfls, forced fumbles, pics. The problem with Rudd in the 2009 season lies somewhere between the missed training camp (contract hold out) and the underachiving d-lineman that populated the Buccaneer roster.

.....its kind of hard to be a powerful run stopping MLB with the likes of Chris Hovan and Ryan Simms in front of you.
