Olson Talked To USC About Offensive Coordinator Position

Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson recently spoke to USC head coach Lane Kiffin and his father, Monte, about the Trojans' vacant offensive coordinator job, according to Rivals.com. Olson was promoted from QBs coach to offensive coordinator after the firing of Jeff Jagodzinski last September.

Tampa Bay's offense was one of the NFL's worst in 2009, ranking 28th overall last year. Despite that fact, Bucs head coach Raheem Morris opted to keep most of his offensive coaching staff intact, including retaining offensive coordinator Greg Olson, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach to that post following the firing of Jeff Jagodzinski last September.

Olson has apparently flirted with the notion of leaving the Bucs. According to Rivals.com, Olson recently spoke with USC head coach Lane Kiffin and his father, Monte, about the Trojans' vacant offensive coordinator job.

Although they worked together in Tampa Bay for one year in 2008, Olson's discussion with the Kiffins didn't amount to much as Rivals.com's report states Olson will remain with the Bucs.

It's unclear whether USC opted against hiring Olson, or if the Bucs prevented him from leaving Tampa Bay for USC. There is a good chance it was the latter since Lane Kiffin is expected to call offensive plays at USC even after he hires an offensive coordinator. Olson signed a contract extension with the Bucs last year shortly after he was promoted to offensive coordinator.

The Buccaneers hired Alex Van Pelt earlier this week to serve as their quarterbacks coach and work closely with second-year signal caller Josh Freeman. The team still is searching for a new wide receivers coach to replace Richard Mann, but that void is expected to be filled by the end of the week.

The WRs coach won't be McCardell, he was just hired by the Redskins

Is there no one competent willing to work for the Bucs. If the ship isn't sinking why are we bleeding coaches. Olson signed an extension this year and he is already looking for opportunities elsewhere? That does not inspire confidence in what he thinks of Freeman or the offense for next year from my perspective.

Is this another Cowher is comming? Yes ,No ,Yes ,No. Why the hell would he give up the OC position also knowing he would be involved in the development of Freeman?

@MVP it's called leverage... They need to add a guy like Marty Sch... as a consult for Rah. They both like the thought of a physical styled team.

They also need to bring in a DB coach from the outside. Children can't raise children. I'm tired of reading about all these promotions. The players have to respect the coaches. I don't see that happening when the coaches fetched Gator Aid and balls the season prior. You know like Rah, last year.

If he went to USC with that clown in charge he is nuts!
I don't have a problem signing him as our offensive coordinator. He's learning under fire; the best way to get good experience.
There are still plenty of good WR coaches out there. Once again' Lawrence Dawsey is aWR Coach at FSU and played with the Bucs for quite a few years.
Go Bucs.

dude, im really getting tired of monte and lane. i know monte did so much for us, but just go away and focus on getting coaches that are not already under contract.

Totally agree...the Kiffin circus needs to keep their greasy paws off our team and turn their beady little eyes elsewhere. Monte has lost a lot of the credibility he had in my opinion with all this bullsh*t with UT and then messing around with our coaching staff. Go away father & jerkoff son.

That last sentence could be read the wrong way. I meant that Lane is a jerkoff...not that Monte needs to go away and jerk off his son. Just want to prevent any flak before it starts.

why would he even consider this? Lane is going to call the plays so he wouldnt have an much control. Also if Freeman does become a good QB Olson name would be tied to him and could land him a bigger job in the league. I hope it does that work way and stays a long time. Although history shows if bucs offense and Freeman become elite, Olson could become a highly wanted coach.

Lane really ruins the Kiffen name considers his pops made it legendary.

It would be great if Olsen goes. Morris could take over the offense. He can handle offense and defense both. It would be an instant upgrade. Go Bucs.

I am really getting sick and tired of the Lane Kiffin. I respect that he wanted his dad to go coach with, but leave the rest of our team alone damn it. Go hire a coach from some elses team and leave our alone. Is Lane going to hire every stinking coach/coordinator that Tampa hires?

Send Olson to USC along with that outstanding running game we installed last season.

Hey Olson, youre a prettey big MORON!!!! Try to keep your head out of your ass this season, and your hand off your dick!!!!!!!

But then again, maybe Olson tried to make a smart move. His attempt to relocate further supports my theory that the Greedy Glazers aren't giving the coaching staff what they need to be sucessful. Leave it up to the Glazers to ruin a good thing.

PR:

Please stop feeding the vultures. This is a non story that does nothing but give all the idiots something to get worked up about. So the Kiffin's approached him about the possibillity. Or they didn't....hearsay from rivals.com doesn't make it fact. If they did approach him....so what? He obviously didn't take the offer.

Basicly two friends got together and talked. That's about it. Anything else stated is fantasy. Some of you guys really need to relax.

Jesse, excellent point.

Jesse, I disagree, I would like to keep up with any possibilities going on with the team even if they are rumor or speculation. with the team being 3-16 and things on the coaching side not getting better yet, yeah I'm going to get worked up if coaches are leaving; but not a lot.

My sentiments exactly Jesse.

How is it that a high school player rating magazine was privy to what would have to have been a private, informal conversation, if it ever really occurred at all? Who told them?

Perhaps Liar Lane was trying to encourage a player to sign with USC by suggesting he might have the opportunity to be coached by the same man as tutored Drew Brees.

Ridiculous! As Judge Judy would say, "If it makes no sense it's probably not true."

"Send Olson to USC along with that outstanding running game we installed last season."

drhorst, how is that Olson's fault? Olson, does not run the ball, Olson does not block up front. It was not Olson's decision to swith back and fourth between RB's. That was a decision made before the season even started when Olson was just a QB coach.

I rather enjoy hearing about things like this happening. I like having coaches that other teams want. Olsen is staying and at least one other team wants him.

How many years were other teams clamoring for guys like R. Marinelli, M. Tomlin, L. Smith., G. Bradley and if you go back far enough even J. Caldwell. I believe he was our QB coach before Dungy convinced him to come to Indy with him. Caldwell could have gone undefeated this season if he wanted to.

Olsen isn't in the same class as these guys yet (except maybe Bradley) but if he gets consistent, who knows?

twodog, you are out of your mind if you think Raheem can call an offense, the coach is a defensive coach and has no clue about running an offense, so wake up. As for the USC sherade, that whole situation is a circus that's bound to die a slow death, go somewhere else for your coaches Kiffens, and stay the hell out of our lives in Tampa Bay!

I agree with whoever said: This is a non story just feeding the vultures here.

Seriously, so the guy looked at a good opening, can't blame him.

As far as the other coaches who have left: they have lost NOTHING so far. A D-Line and WR coach? Their two worst areas? Sounds like they needed new coaches there anyway.

If they suck and win 4 games next year and get blown out 5 times, then fire Raheem and Olsen and start over, until then... lighten up and realize it is a young staff and a young team trying to work it out with owners who are broke.
