The Buccaneers dropped a heart breaker in overtime to the New Orleans Saints 37-31 on Sunday, leaving the Buccaneers sitting at 1-4 on the season. Below are some quotes and initial reaction from the locker room immediately following Sunday’s loss.
Head coach Lovie Smith
(On his thoughts of the tough game)
“Tough game, but you knew coming in that it would be a tough duty, but guys fought hard. Whenever you can comeback from 13 and go up by 11 you’re doing some good things. But no matter what, it’s always about the finish and we didn’t finish the way we needed to.”
(On what the Bucs did well to build a lead after halftime)
“We were just playing. Playing the defense and running the offense. When we got in position where we needed a play, we were doing it. Whether it be Danny Lansanah with his interception for a touchdown or the offense just converting and keeping the ball, there was a time when we were playing pretty good football.”
(On how pleased he was by many players getting involved like Lansanah, Murphy and Herron)
“Very pleased. I mean Louis (Murphy) two weeks in a row has made big plays in critical situations for us so we’re excited about that. And Robert Herron as you mentioned hasn’t had a lot of time, but to be able to score (was great). For him, he had more plays this week with the injury to Mike Evans. I liked some of the things he (Herron) was able to do also.”
(On giving the Saints credit for taking advantage of opportunities)
“Yes they did. To go by thirteen (31-20) when you feel like you have control of the game, and then to lose it like that. They (Saints) were able to regroup. I mean they have a great hall of fame quarterback. We knew there was still a lot of football to be played. Just like in the earlier parts when things were going our way, you have to make some plays in critical moments, and we weren’t able to do that in the end.”
(On coming back home and try to regroup)
“Yes we will regroup. We won’t try, we will regroup. That was a tough road stretch for us. We’re not satisfied with our 1-4 record and 0-1 in the second quarter. But we can still see the light at the end of the tunnel. Again we’re improving as a ball club, and eventually we’re going to be able to put it together from start to finish.”
Quarterback Mike Glennon
(On his immediate thoughts following the loss)
“Yeah tough loss. We did a lot of good things in all phases of the ball to get that lead that we did. This is a tough place to play, but we had them right where we wanted. Our defense was forcing Drew (Brees) to some turnovers, which is tough. That doesn’t happen often (Brees throwing INTs). The (Bucs) offense was clicking at the end of the first half and into the second half. At the end of the game, and we’ll to watch film to see what exactly happened, but it’s a tough way to lose. We had them up on the road in their place. So we’ll learn from it and we’ll be better.”
(On the Bucs offensive success)
“Yeah we were moving the ball well. It kind of felt like Pittsburgh in the second half. We were really getting going, starting at the end of the second quarter. They were having a hard time stopping us. We were doing whatever we wanted, guys made big plays and the offensive line played great all day. Other than that there was the sack at the end. I don’t even know if it was a bad thing to take a safety in that situation. They (offensive line) weren’t letting those guys (Saints defensive line) through and they have Pro Bowl defensive lineman over there. Our offensive line played really well and guys made a lot of plays.”
(On giving credit to the Saints making plays on defense and scoring in OT)
“Yeah it’s not ideal to give Drew Brees the ball three times with the game on the line like that. We know how good he is and how good that offense is. As an offense we need to make the most of our opportunities at the end of the game so we don’t have to play defense in that situation.”
(On regrouping, going home and and putting the loss behind them)
“Yeah it will be good to be back home in our place. We’ll start getting ready for Baltimore.”
Linebacker Danny Lansanah
(On his immediate thoughts following the loss)
“You know it’s conference play and we have to find a way to come up with a win. Like you said, we left it all out there. We played our butts off on offense, defense and special teams. We came up seven points short. We have to find a way to win though man.”
(On the three takeaways including his pick-six keeping them in the game)
“Coach emphasizes that every week in practice. We have to take the ball away and give our offense opportunities and short field advantages and that’s what we did. But we have to get off the field on third down. That’s a big thing. We have to get off the field on third down and get the ball back in our offenses hands.”
(On giving credit to Saints in OT)
“Yeah definitely. They were clicking on all cylinders man. Drew Brees is an elite quarterback and he had the offense rolling. But like I said, we have to find a way to stop teams like that and give our offense the opportunity to win the game.”

Coach said it all. This team is getting better and I am very encouraged by it. Go Bucs!
Tough loss. But definitely see the difference in our play. Go ‘Bucs !!!!!
This team is coming to very good for years to come. And im very happy about that. Go Bucs
The defense simply got tired and frustrated by the dink passes and just couldn’t get off the field. The ticky tack hands to the face penalty on Banks was a tough one.
Lovie Smith “we can still see the light at the end of the tunnel”. Yes, it is a train coming to run you over. Losers.
No excuses, you lost again. “If “ifs” and “Bucs” were candy and nuts, wouldn’t it be a sweetly insane moral victory?”
“We are a good team, we have won 20% of our games.” Get your tickets for the “Loser Bowl” here! Just wait until we regroup for next week, then you will be surprised and impressed. We didn’t want to let our mystery offense out of the bag too soon. We are ready now to win the rest of our games this year and win the Super Bowl, so that we can make NFL history, it is all part of our master plan. I have to go now, I have to go buy some swampland in Florida.
Lovie “When we got in position where we needed a play, we were doing it.” Oh yeah, except for that drive where you called stupid plays and got penalized a million times into a sack safety. Forget about that one did ya?
