We should have totally made Antrel Rolle the highest paid safety in NFL history like the Giants did. Or gave 30 year old Julius Peppers a 7 year/$95 million deal. We'd be waaaay better off that way.
*sarcasm
Of course, not and I think the vast majority of people here are not suggesting we should have signed Peppers or Rolle for that money (although we probably couldn't have - they wouldn't have wanted to come here!).
Rather, the frustration is that we're not doing anything to plug some gaping holes that can't all be filled at the draft. What happens if Suh and McCoy are off the board by No. 3, and we can't trade down? I completely agree with the philosophy of building through the draft, I don't want to be the Redskins (or Bears). But we desperately need some players, and when everything I'm hearing is that the Bucs aren't talking to anyone... The biggest issue is at WR - which can't be addressed at the draft. Freeman needs a good receiver to throw to, and WRs take at least a year to develop. All the success that players like Harvin and Maclin have had has come opposite of established receivers - and no one's saying there's a Randy Moss in this draft.
So while we're not after profligate spending - we HAVE TO bring in some players through FA/trade. Or else we're following up a 3-13 season less Bryant (I was going to put some more names of UFAs - then I realized we didn't have anyone else talented enough that we should worry about their departure).
