Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin will be named to the 2013 Pro Bowl, joining defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and wide receiver Vincent Jackson in representing the NFC next month.
Martin was selected as a first alternate, but with San Francisco running back Frank Gore advancing to the Super Bowl, it opens a spot that will be filled by Martin.
Martin was third in the NFL with total yards from scrimmage (1,926) behind just Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. The rookie from Boise State was selected in the first round (31st pick) and took the starting running back job away from incumbent LeGarrette Blount during the preseason.
Martin’s rookie season started off slowly but on an October Thursday night nationally-televised game, Martin exploded on the national scene with 135 yards rushing and added 79 yards receiving while scoring two touchdowns.
Martin finished his rookie campaign with 1,454 yards on the ground and 11 TDs, while also adding 49 receptions for 472 yards and one TD.
Jackson, who was a first alternate for the Pro Bowl, replaces Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who had to back out of the game due to injury. This will be Jackson’s third Pro Bowl and his first as a Buccaneer. In his first season in Tampa Bay, Jackson caught 72 passes for 1,384 yards – both were career highs – and eight touchdowns. The last Bucs wide receiver to make the Pro Bowl was Keenan McCardell in 2003.
McCoy, who was voted to the Pro Bowl outright, finished a 16-game season for the first time in his career and was second on the team with a career-high five sacks, 30 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. This will be the first Pro Bowl appearance for the third-year defensive tackle.
The last member of the Buccaneers to make the Pro Bowl was right guard Davin Joseph in 2011. The last time Tampa Bay had multiple players represent the NFC in Hawaii was in 2008 when Joseph, cornerback Ronde Barber, linebacker Derrick Brooks and kick returner Clifton Smith went to the Pro Bowl.
