The Tampa Bay Buccaneers invested their first of two seventh-round picks (No. 217 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft in Western Michigan cornerback E.J. Biggers on Sunday.

The 5-foot-11 180-pound Biggers is a player that has been on Tampa Bay’s radar since earlier in the offseason. He visited the Bucs on April 2.

A native of Miami Beach, Fla., Biggers ran a 4.35 40-yard dash at his pro day workout, where he turned in a 36-inch vertical jump. He’s a physical corner with good man coverage skills, which is required in new defensive coordinator Jim Bates’ scheme.

Biggers recorded 136 career tackles, six tackles for loss, seven interceptions and 19 passes defensed. He was overshadowed by Western Michigan safety Louis Delmas, who selected by Detroit with the first pick of the second round on Saturday.

A three-year starter, Delmas is considered a great athlete and has spent time on offense, throwing a pair of passes off reverses, including a 76-yard touchdown against Cincinnati in 2006. He also blocked a kick, returned six punts for 48 yards, returned 11 kicks for 170 yards and is expected to initially compete for a roster spot on special teams while he learns Tampa Bay’s defensive scheme.

Biggers joins Aqib Talib, Ronde Barber, Elbert Mack, Greg Fassit, Kyle Arrington and Torrie Cox in Tampa Bay’s stable of cornerbacks.
