The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to tinker with their defensive end position in hope of generating a more consistent pass rush. On Monday, the team claimed rookie defensive end Michael Bennett off waivers from Seattle and waived rookie offensive lineman Marc Dile.
The Buccaneers are continuing to look for ways to upgrade their pass rush and claimed rookie defensive end Michael Bennett off waivers from Seattle on Monday. The 6-foot-3, 274-pound Bennett was waived on October 11 to make room for defensive tackle Kyle Williams after signing with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M on April 27, 2009.

Bennett, whose brother Martellus is a tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, had an underwhelming senior season for the Aggies where he recorded 42 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He didn’t help his draft stock at the NFL Scouting Combine where he ran a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash, yet he did bench 225 pounds 24 times and post a 31-inch vertical jump.

Bennett made Seattle’s 53-man roster by having an impressive preseason where he recorded nine tackles, five quarterback hurries, two sacks, deflected a pass and recovered a fumble for the Seahawks. That undoubtedly caught the Buccaneers’ attention and prompted the team to claim him off waivers.

Since the start of the season when rookie Kyle Moore suffered groin and knee injuries, Tampa Bay has continued to target the defensive end position as an area worth upgrading as it signed defensive end Tim Crowder, who has earned playing time in the rotation, in addition to signing former Penn State standout Maurice Evans, who has been on and off the Bucs roster in recent weeks. Evans was released on Saturday to create a roster spot for free safety Tanard Jackson, who was activated from the exempt/commissioner permission list after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse program.

To make room for Bennett on the active roster, the team waived rookie guard Marc Dile, who played collegiately at the University of South Florida, which is in Tampa.
