Tuesday on The Earnest Graham Show heard on 1010 CBS Sports Radio, second-year quarterback Josh Johnson made a guest appearance, as Graham took the night off to visit with family. On the show, Johnson talked about his relationship with Greg Olson, and what he brings to the table in his role as offensive coordinator.
"[Olson] is very smart and knowledgeable about the game of football," Johnson said. "He has been a lot of different places and has worked with many different football players."
The Buccaneers play the New Orleans Saints at home on Sunday, and one player that Olson worked with and helped develop during his tenure at Purdue as the quarterbacks coach was this week's opposing QB, Drew Brees. While working with Olson at Purdue, Brees had seven 400-yard passing games and 16 300-yard passing games. During his time at Purdue, Olson also recruited Denver quarterback Kyle Orton. Other notable quarterbacks that Olson worked with during his career include: Jon Kitna, Marc Bulger, and Jeff Garcia.
"You see a little of those guys in me and Josh [Freeman] from watching the film from when he was in those places," said Johnson. "[Olson] is bringing good things to our game, and we are excited about it. He is doing a great job with his new duties as the offensive coordinator while continuing his duties as the quarterbacks coach. He has handled it well, and this offense should continue to progress."
Along with giving praise to Olson, Johnson also spoke about his relationship with former Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. Gruden drafted Johnson in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft.
"Last year I had a lot of contact with Jon," said Johnson. "He was in all of the quarterback meetings, and he was always real hands-on with all the quarterbacks on and off the field. I grew a lot under him."
When Johnson got his opportunity to start this season, he completed 63 of his passes for 685 yards, along with passing for four touchdowns and eight interceptions. Johnson remains the Buccaneers backup quarterback and would get another opportunity to play again this season if an injury were to occur to rookie Josh Freeman.
