Tuesday is typically an off day for players in the National Football League, but One Buccaneer Place will be busy today.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are scheduled to work out several punters, including Danny Baugher, Sam Paulescu, Ricky Schmitt and Durant Brooks in an attempt to fill the void left by Dirk Johnson, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Baugher, 25, has spent time with the Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals and Patriots. One day after New England released him in 2007, Baugher, was charged with assaulting his father, Erie, in a fast-food parking lot, according to ESPN.
His most recent stint came in the UFL, where he led the league in punting as a member of the Las Vegas Locomotives.
Brooks, 24, was a 2008 sixth-round pick with the Washington Redskins. He has spent time with Washington and Green Bay. At Georgia Tech, Brooks won the Ray Guy award. In the NFL, he's averaged 39.6 yards punt on 26 attempts.
Paulescu, 25, has spent time with Dallas, Denver and Washington. He has averaged 42.4 yards per punt on 61 attempts in the NFL.
Schmitt, 24, has played with Arizona, Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He has not punted in a regular season game.
One punter that is available, but the Bucs have not contacted in regards to a tryout, is Todd Sauerbrun.
Sauerbrun, 36, averaged 44.1 yards per punt and pinned 264 of his 889 attempts inside the 20-yard line during his 13-year career in the NFL. His last stint in the league came with Denver in 2007 when he averaged 46.8 yards per punt. Sauerbrun, who recently punted in the UFL, has had difficulty getting back into the NFL due to some off-the-field issues in his past.
