Notre Dame alum Maurice Stovall thinks that former Buccaneer head coach Jon Gruden would be a good choice as head coach for his alma mater. Stovall played for Gruden for three seasons (2006-2008). Even before the Fighting Irish fired head coach Charlie Weis one of the rumored successors was Gruden.

"I think Gruden, if he had an opportunity to coach at Notre Dame, would do a great job," said Stovall. "I think his style of football and his personality would rub off on his players. Maybe him being an NFL coach, and having a Super Bowl under his belt, maybe that would attract better recruits. Maybe even a better coaching staff. If Gruden had that opportunity he'd do a great job."

Gruden spent part of his youth in South Bend while his father Jim Gruden was an assistant coach for Notre Dame for three seasons (1978-80). In that time Joe Montana played for the Irish, and Jon Gruden wrote fondly about Notre Dame in his book Do You Love Football?!: Winning with Heart, Passion, and Not Much Sleep. Although Gruden expressed that those feelings took a hit when Notre Dame changed coaches and his father was let go.

In some aspects Gruden may not be the best of fits at the college level. Gruden is known for his massive playbook and complex game plans. In his book Gruden did not seem to express much affinity for recruiting high school players while being a college assistant at Tennessee, Southeast Missouri State, University of Pacific, and Pittsburgh. Notre Dame is known for their tough academic standards, and a strict administration. Either could be a hindrance in Gruden getting the player's he wants. Stovall was asked if Gruden could have a good working relationship with Notre Dame's administration.

"I think he would. They say that Charlie Weis had a lot of personality," Stovall said. "I don't think he ever had any problems with the administration. You always want to keep it professional. In my opinion I think Gruden would do a great job."
