Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib took a big step Friday in terms of putting his brush with the law behind him.

Talib and cab driver David Duggan have reached a settlement, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The financial terms weren't disclosed, but Duggan, 48, suggested to the Times that Talib would be giving Duggan a significant amount of money.

"Put it this way, if I play it smart, I'll be set," Duggan said.

The misdemeanor battery charge Talib still potentially faces stems from his arrest on Aug. 18 when he allegedly struck Duggan with a closed fist on Interstate 275 in the Tampa Bay area.

According to the Times' report, Duggan could play a role in helping Talib enter a pre-trial intervention program, which could allow the former first-round pick to avoid jail time.

"I feel for him, that he made a big mistake and that kind of thing, but I have no animosity  towards him," Duggan said. "I feel he paid his debt to me and society and the man is really sorry and he showed that in the civil matter. I just want to put this behind me and hope he has a better football career and not make another mistake."

Talib leads the Buccaneers with five interceptions this season. The Bucs and the NFL were working together to determine what discipline, if any, Talib should face in terms of a fine and/or suspension since this was not his first incident as a professional football player.
