The Buccaneers released six veteran players on Monday following the 2010 NFL Draft. PewterReport.com had previously reported the release of veteran defensive tackle Chris Hovan and fullback B.J. Askew, but Tampa Bay has also waived guard Arron Sears, guard Shawn Murphy, cornerback Stoney Woodson and punter Sam Paulescu.
Sears, a second-round draft choice in 2007, was the team's starting left guard during the 2007-08 season. He went AWOL from the team after the team's first mini-camp in April of 2009 due to what the team called "personal problems." Sears, who is believed to have some mental health issues, did return to the team on November 17, but was overweight and out of shape. He spent the entire season on the Non-Football Illness List.
Sears was working out and lifting weights as early as March, 2010, but the team was not confident that his personal problems were behind him and decided to part ways with him, fearing that his NFL playing days might be over.
The release of Murphy comes on the heels of signing undrafted free agent guard Sergio Render, who was a four-year starter at Virginia Tech.
The drafting of Virginia Tech's Brent Bowden means that he will be Tampa Bay's punter in 2010, which led to the release of Paulescu.
