The Buccaneers signed running back Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams to his one-year tender contract on Wednesday. Williams was a restricted free agent that had the second highest possible tender placed on him. Any team that would have signed Williams away from Tampa Bay would have to compensate the Buccaneers with a first-round pick.

The 5-foot-11, 217-pound Williams will have a slight pay increase in 2010. Next season he is slated to earn $2.22 million compared to $2.09 million last season. Williams enters the offseason healthy for the first time in years. After sustaining serious knee injuries in 2007 and 2008, Williams played in all 16 games in 2009 and led Tampa Bay in rushing. He ran for 823 yards with four touchdowns and averaged 3.9 yards per carry.

Williams, 28, is fifth all-time in Bucs history in rushing with 3,240 yards. He has played in 54 career games and averaged 3.8 yards per carry in his career with 18 touchdowns. For his career he has 88 receptions for 554 yards and three touchdowns. Williams was the rookie of the year after being the fifth-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. That year Williams ran for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns while leading the Buccaneers to an NFC South championship.

Along with signing Williams, Tampa Bay claimed guard/tackle Michael Shumard off waivers from the Denver Broncos. Shumard (6-5, 301) was undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M that signed with Denver after the 2010 NFL Draft. In 2009 Shumard made three starts at guard and eight at tackle. In 2008 he started all season at left tackle. The Bucs also released tackle Robert Okeafor.

After signing Williams, Jeremy Trueblood, Barrett Ruud, Maurice Stovall, Elbert Mack, and Clifton Smith the only Bucs player that has yet to sign his tender offer is left tackle Donald Penn.
