The writing is on the wall for Michael Clayton.
After signing a 5-year, $24 million contract last offseason, Clayton is now listed in the "other" category for wide receivers. At the flanker position, he is behind Maurice Stovall (starter), Sammie Stroughter (second string), and rookie Arrelious Benn (third string). The rest of the receivers in the "other" section are Terrence Nunn, Chris Brooks and Preston Parker.
It looks like the Bucs may be ready to finally cut ties with the former first-round pick after Clayton had a career low 16 receptions for 230 yards, and just one touchdown in 2009.
Other notable observations from the Bucs initial depth chart:
It's official. Rookie Mike Williams is the No. 1 receiver. He has easily been the best player at his position this offseason and his hard work has been rewarded.
Jeremy Zuttah is listed ahead of Keydrick Vincent at the left guard position. It looks that will change midway through the preseason because Vincent has been working with the first team O-line during camp.Same goes for Sabby Piscitelli who is listed ahead of Sean Jones for the right to be the starting strong safety. Jones has been impressive in camp and could win the job with a decent preseason.
No surprise as rookie Gerald McCoy is the starting undertackle. Roy Miller will be starting at nose tackle. Even though he is not listed as a starter, rookie Brian Price will see plenty of action.
The seventh-rounders continue to impress. Cody Grimm is the No. 2 free safety and Dekoda Watson is the No. 2 Sam linebacker behind Quincy Black.
