Despite the team's 3-1 record, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not sell out this week's home game against the New Orleans Saints, according to team spokesperson Jonathan Grella. Even with a potentially strong walk-up crowd, there are too many tickets remaining unsold and the Bucs will have their third straight home game blacked out and not shown on local television. Plenty of seats remain for Sunday's game, which will kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
The Saints, who are the defending Super Bowl champions, are ranked third in the NFC South behind Tampa Bay, and have a 3-2 record this season. New Orleans was upset at Arizona on Sunday, 30-20.
The rest of Tampa Bay's home games are expected to be blacked out unless the team goes on a huge winning streak and fan support intensifies.
According to Grella, the Bucs' best and only chance for a sold out home game to avoid a blackout was the Pittsburgh game, and that was due to the fact that the Steelers are a national team with a huge fan base that travels well to road games. Even though the Pittsburgh contest was near capacity, it was approximately 4,000 seasons shy of a sell out. The announced paid attendance for that game was 61,036.
