Spurlock's Stock On The Rise

Written by Wolf

ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas keeps tabs on players and coaches in his weekly Stock Watch feature. This week Yasinskas has listed wide receiver Micheal Spurlock as a player whose stock is rising within the NFC South.
Micheal Spurlock, receiver, Buccaneers. This little guy is showing signs he might be more than just a return man. After Piscitelli’s interception, Spurlock made a great catch on a great throw by Josh Freeman. He kept both feet in bounds long enough and the play allowed the Bucs to kick a game-winning field goal.

PewterReport.com's Take: Yasinskas is correct on this one. For a guy that only had four career receptions heading into the 2010 season, Spurlock has certainly made his fair share of big plays thus far. Along with the 21-yarder he caught against Cincinnati, in Week 1 against the Browns, Spurlock made a tremendous, over the shoulder grab for a 33-yard touchdown that proved to be the game-winner. Spurlock has been the Bucs second best receiver up to this point and has recorded six receptions for 94 yards and one score. If Spurlock can start to make some of the dynamic plays that fans are accustomed to seeing from him in the return game again, he could really make a difference for this young, ascending team.

Raheam said in a press conference that Mo' has to earn his spot back, and that injuries always play a role in a football season. Next year might be different, but this year why cut him? Look how long it took Benn to get into the mix. Briscoe has been in Tampa for 3 weeks (??). I do hope everyone is right about him. I still would like to see Parker back for kicks as opposed to Spurlock, or even Huggins for that matter. Is this the same Yasinskas that picked the Bucs to win 2 games all year--Yeah, that's an informed opinion--Shouldn't he be talking about the TD from Favre to Moss in the game that they LOST? As far as spreading the ball around, here are the stats from game 4. It's not double teaming trouble yet, but it looks like progress to me. Stroughter 4 receptions for 39 yards; Spurlock 3 receptions for 35 yards; Williams 7 receptions for 99 yards and a score; Benn 2 receptions for 25 yards; Gilmore 1 reception for 11 yards; Winslow 6 receptions for 75 yards.

Am I the only one that is noticing how clutch Spurlock has been? Going back to the New Orleans game, he returned a punt for a TD that tied the game (which we eventually won). He caught the game winning TD against Cleveland. Then he makes a ridiculous catch that there was no way ANY wide receiver should have made to set up a chip shot field goal. That is 3 out of our last 6 wins that he is directly responsible for. Pretty impressive.

What are they waiting for, drop Stovall and bring Briscoe up.

Yup. With the money they are paying Briscoe, they don't plan on him for the practice squad long. And Benn has filled the special teams role Stovall has done so well on.

Giving up on Stovall, who was a beast in special teams play is a bit like how we gave up on Spurlock. Now that he's been given an opportunity, he's taking advantage of it. Perhaps we should send the ball Stovall's way a bit before we cut him.

abucsfan, I think we're not because there are four other receivers better than him and they can take a pounding. Is this his 4th or 5th season? I think he has had more than enough time.

And why is Stovall still on the team?

If the Bucs can ever get Parker, Benn, and Briscoe, active and involved, defenses won't know who they should double cover. There's more to this receiving corps than Mike Williams and K2. I'm beginning to think these guys are all insurance policies. Freeman needs to spread the ball around more. They ALL need experience. Parker has been outstanding in his few opportunities, and Benn has been solid. Briscoe was great in college, and his loss sure pissed Lewis off. Having Briscoe on the sideline Sunday was a stroke of pure genius. Lewis was fuming. Dump Stovall and get Briscoe in the game.

I agree. After this year if Stovall doesn't prove himself you gotta cut him and bring up Briscoe. He's a beast.

1sparkybuc: I'm encouraged by our young receiving corps too; but to say lining up the three pass catchers you mentioned, who have caught only a half dozen passes between them in the NFL, and think the opponent is concerned about how to cover them, is a little far fetched at this point. I agree with you on the exchange of Briscoe for Stovall.
