I suffered my first loss of the season in my PPR keeper league by one point last week (thanks to the Titans sack at the end of the game vs. JAC), but I righted the ship this week. I enjoyed some bounce back performances by running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Peyton Hillis, and it didn't hurt that wide receiver Roddy White popped off for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. I am now 6-1 in that league and 5-2 in my other work league. Hope your teams are doing well now that we are past the halfway point of the year. If not, look to make some trades to help your teams make a push for the playoffs.
Week 7 Playback:
Ben Rothlisberger sure has been sharp since his return last week. On Sunday Big Ben torched a pretty good Miami team on the road to move the Steelers to 5-1 on the season. He connected on a few long balls and went 19-of-27 for 302 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Owners who picked Big Ben with a late round draft pick are now reaping the benefits. He now has 559 yards and five touchdowns since rejoining the Steelers. He is playing like a QB1 so keep him active for what should be a high scoring game next week against the New Orleans Saints.
What was Mike Martz thinking in Chicago? Your tailbacks had 61 yards on 13 carries (4.7 avg.), but Martz decides to let quarterback Jay Cutler air it out over 40 times in a game that was close throughout. The end result was not one, not two, not three, but four interceptions by 'Skins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, and another tough loss. Captain Turnover also lost a fumble during the game as well. Cutler now has 10 giveaways on the year compared to just seven touchdowns. He should only be starting when a very favorable matchup presents itself.
Folks, it looks like we have a new feature back in Tampa Bay. Starter Cadillac Williams has struggled all season and he had just four carries last week for 12 yards. Meanwhile, rookie LeGarrette Blount gave the Bucs’ offense a spark in the second half and finished the game with 72 yards. Time to get this guy if he is still available in your league, and chances are he will be. His value is limited in PPR leagues because Williams will still play on passing downs, but Blount should be owned in all standard leagues.
It may be time to bench Old Man Favre on your virtual teams because ankle injuries or Brad Childress won't do it in real life. Favre has been dreadful this season after having the best season of his career in 2009. He only managed 212 yards and one touchdown, while throwing three costly picks against his former team on Sunday. Like Cutler, Favre has been turning the ball over like crazy this season. His turnover to touchdown is a very disturbing 2:1, and he is likely destroying your lineup. Sit him if you have better options.
I would have thought you were crazy if you said…
• Ryan Fitzpatrick would carve up the Ravens secondary. The Harvard balla almost led the Bills to their first win of the season by throwing for 374 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He also added 20 yards on the ground. This guy will have plenty of opportunities to throw because the Bills are so bad. Fitzpatrick has been on fire the last few weeks. He may not be the long term answer at the QB position, but owners should take advantage of his hot streak while it lasts.
• Drew Brees would struggle so mightily against the lowly the Browns at home. Yes, he slung it for 356 yards and two scores, but he also threw four picks, two of which were returned for touchdowns by linebacker David Bowens. The defending Super Bowl MVP could not get into any rhythm and because of that the Saints are now 4-3 and in third place in the NFC South. Brees does not look the same, and he has already thrown 10 interceptions after only having thrown 11 all of last season. You can’t bench him, but it’s time to temper expectations a tad bit.
• Wide out David Gettis would have his coming out party. The 6-foot-3, 216-pound rookie out of Baylor caught eight balls for 125 yards with two touchdowns. He had great chemistry with Matt Moore (yes, he is starting again). All Pro Steve Smith should be coming back soon from injury, but Gettis looks like he will be the No. 2 receiver in that offense. They are still a run-first team, but Gettis is worth having on your roster, especially in PPR leagues.
• Kenny Britt would have the game of his life in just two and a half quarters. Britt was benched for the first quarter and a half because of some legal problems he got into a few nights before. That didn’t slow him down one bit though. The second-year pro out of Rutgers caught seven passes for a whopping 225 yards and three touchdowns. He now has seven TDs in seven games after scoring three as a rookie last year. It won’t always be this good, but Britt should be starting in all lineups from here on out.
• Darren McFadden would slash and dash through the Denver Broncos for almost 200 total yards and four scores. After being considering a bust his first two seasons, Run DMC has had the light come on for him in his third season. He racked up 165 rushing yards on 16 carries and added another 31 on two receptions against the Broncos. He is averaging 5.5 yards per carry this year and over 10 yards per catch. And don’t worry about Michael Bush. Most of his carries came after long McFadden runs and late in the game. McFadden is a very strong RB2. Don't sell high on Run DMC.
