Steve White Calls Out Jones for Lack Of Production

Things weren’t all pretty for the Bucs in their 18-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams last week. In his weekly the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly column, former Buccaneers defensive end Steve White calls out strong safety Sean Jones for his lack of stats against the Rams.

Sean Jones: If you would have told me before the game that our starting Strong Safety would only have 1 tackle and 1 assist against the Rams and running back Steven Jackson I would have told you that you were nuts. But that's exactly what happened. I can't say that it all falls on Jones though because one thing that I've noticed about our defense is that they rarely line up our safeties in the box when we want to have an 8 man front. Instead the safeties usually roll into the box on the snap...

But even having said that I just don't understand how Jones could be that invisible against a running back that went for over 100 yards on us.

Some how, some way that has to change right away.

PewterReport.com's Take: While Jones was largely silent against St. Louis, he has been virtually invisible all season thus far. In 53 career starts with the Eagles and Browns, Jones recorded 16 interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two sacks. In six games, Jones has zeroes across the board in all of those categories so far this season. He also averaged 103.5 tackles in the two years that he started all 16 games for Cleveland in 2006 and 2007. Jones is on pace for only 72 tackles this year. Jones did suffer a back injury against the Bengals that caused him to miss all but one play, but he bounced back the following week against the Saints and recorded eight tackles in that game. If Jones does not starting making a bigger impact during games it would not be shocking to see the Bucs turn back to Sabby Piscitelli, who has performed well when on the field this season.

I must admit that I never heard of Sean Jones before he came to the bucs. He must be average...

Don't look now, or actually maybe do look, but Sabby has been getting in on a regular rotation ever since the Cincy game. The "competition" at SS is alot like the competition at QB in training camp '09. May the more average guy win. Still Sabby's play on the rotation has been solid, and alot better than Jones, who seems to like to run in and jump on the pile after the play has been made.

    # 26 never stands out in the game, either good or bad. Sabby, on the other hand used to stand out for all of the wrong reasons. But it was his first year as a starter. If Morris and Lake think Sabby's light has come on, I'm all for giving him another shot.

Why doesn't Lynch get any consideration? All he does is make plays when he's on the field.

Jones didn't make THAT many plays prior to hooking up with the Bucs. He's adequate. It's not even the midpoint of the season. He could still make some plays. Personally, I'd like to see Grimm take a shot at the SS spot next year (provided the Bucs' draft a FS in case Tanard spends a little too much time with Jerramy Stevens if you know what I mean...). He's one of the best tacklers on the team and can still cover. The way he took Steven Jackson out of the game, I feel he can play the run probably better than any other safety on the roster.

Don't know what has changed at PR, (maybe were missing JF and Scotties tied up with all the other hats he's wearing now), but their evaluations of players has taken a turn for the worse (ex. Sabby & Faine)

bucfan33 you wanna take two guesses who PR gets all sorts of interviews and quotes from?

Jones was brought in to NOT give up the big play and HOPEFULLY make splash plays. While he has none of the latter, he has been stable - just ok. I'll take ok over Sabby at this point...we're 4-2.

It's the defensive line that should be called out over and over, not the safeties.

Are you high PR? There is a HUGE difference between invisible and liability , Sabby made a great play in Cincy. And the rest of the time it was same old Sabby. Bad angles and broken ankles. I don't think Jones personally has cost the Bucs a game yet. What logic makes you think the Bucs will want to put the riskier player in there when they are winning games in such close fashion?

Good God, not Sabby. Anything but that.

Is that our only choice? Isn't there someone called Corey Lynch who can play that position?
