Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris made it publicly known at the end of the 2010 season that he wanted his veteran cornerback and best friend back for another season. Morris got his wish when the team officially re-signed Ronde Barber to a one-year contract on Tuesday.
"We're excited that Ronde will continue to build on his Hall of Fame career in 2011," said general manager Mark Dominik. "Last season, Ronde once again showed that he's an invaluable professional and mentor to our young football team, both on and off the field. I'm also happy that our fans can continue to enjoy one of the Buccaneers' all-time greats."
Barber, who is the last remaining Bucs player from the Super Bowl winning team in 2002, has spent his entire 14-year career with Tampa Bay. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound Barber was a third-round pick out of Virginia in 1997.
During his career with the Bucs, Barber has been a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a three-time first team All-Pro selection, and was named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team. Barber also currently has the most consecutive starts (183) of any player not named Peyton Manning, and he is the only player in NFL history with 40 interceptions and at least 25 sacks (26).
In 2009, Barber had a productive season with 93 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, seven passes defensed, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery, but the veteran failed to record an interception for the first time in any season since he became a starter in 1998.
Barber, 35, rebounded with a stellar 2010 campaign. He played at a Pro Bowl level all season and finished with 102 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, 16 passes defensed, three interceptions, one sack, and one forced fumble.
For his career, Barber is second all-time in Buccaneers history with 1,258 tackles. He owns the team record for most interceptions with 40. Barber also has 26 career sacks, 120 passes defensed, and 11 forced fumbles. If Barber plays starts all 16 games in 2011, he will unseat linebacker Derrick Brooks as the record holder for most starts in team history with 225.
