Benn Has Reporting Bonus For Training Camp

ESPN.com's NFC South Expert Pat Yasinskas has written an interesting nugget regarding Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Arrelious Benn.
The second-year wide receiver is coming off major knee surgery and he recently said he’s walking a fine line in trying to be patient in a comeback that’s going well. But testing his knee isn’t the only reason why Benn is hoping for labor peace to come soon. When training camp starts, he’ll have a $750,000 check waiting for him inside One Buccaneer Place.

I just looked through contract information on all NFC South players (excluding rookies because they can’t have contracts until there’s a labor agreement) and Benn is the only player in the division with a reporting bonus for training camp. Other players have workout and roster bonuses (and many of those have been tied up, at least temporarily, by the lockout), but reporting bonuses are seldom used in the NFC South.

Carolina general manager Marty Hurney and Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff traditionally avoid using reporting bonuses.

    PewterReport.com's Take: It is interesting that Benn is the only player in the division with this kind of bonus. The Bucs using this type of bonus for only Benn is a real head-scratcher. The effect of the lockout on the start date of training camp could also factor in to Benn receiving that bonus. After Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik took his present position in January of 2009 he hired Digger Daley to be his top salary cap and contract negotiation staffer. Daley left the Bucs organization prior to the 2011 NFL Draft. The Bucs have some in house candidates to replace Daley. One of them is a young staffer named Mike Greenberg who has a background in player contracts and salary cap management from working with the New York Jets and the league office. Perhaps the odd bonus in Benn's contract was one of the factors in the Bucs and Daley parting ways.

    I agree with Buctebow that this is probably just a portion of Benn's original signing bonus. Non-issue for me.

    This doesn't make sense to me either, I hope they still pay the man if there is no TC if not he got royally screwed IMO.

    They obviously didn't have a salary cap problem, so perhaps it is something farfetched and ridiculous like there was an arbitrary signing bonus, or other budget cap for last year the Glazers had put in place and this was a way to stay within that and still get around it and get Benn the "signing bonus" he thought he deserved?

    Does he forfeit the bonus check if there is no Training camp ? I mean if they start the season on opening day without a camp, maybe he doesn't get it ? They better get this thing done as we have a lot of injured players. And it seems unlikely that all of them will play on opening day if they are not getting team led rehab.

    Why this is a head-scratcher is a real head-scratcher to me. The story made it clear that this type of bonus is unusual, but I don't even know if it's a good or a bad thing. Good or bad for the organization I mean. Regardless of which it is it doesn't seem bad enough for the Bucs and Daley to part ways over. Maybe it's just my lack of understanding of the situation. Is his salary for 2011 significantly less than other 2nd round picks without the bonus? If so, who cares if he's getting his pay early in one big chunk.

    pinkstop, I am as confused about it as you are. I don't know if this is good or bad for Benn. Does anyone know? I don't think PR knows or they would have explained it better.
