Although Tampa Bay is woefully inconsistent at the quarterback position and in the areas of pass protection and run blocking, there is one area of the offense that has been remarkably consistent this season - the play of wide receiver Joey Galloway. For the second straight week, Galloway has been the lone bright spot on offense and finished the Buccaneers'34-14 loss to Carolina with five catches for 83, including a 50-yard touchdown. For his efforts, Galloway is once again PewterReport.com's Pewter Player of the Game.
Galloway's 50-yard touchdown came on the first play of the second quarter after Tampa Bay fell behind 10-0 and seemed to temporarily spark the Buccaneers. Quarterback Chris Simms used a seven-step drop to give Galloway the necessary time to blaze past Carolina safety Mike Minter downfield before putting up a high arcing pass that closely resembled a punt before hitting the speedy Bucs receiver in stride in the middle of the end zone. That play give the Buccaneers a lift and pulled them within a field goal, 10-7.
"We used a quick count and had a tight slot formation where we felt if Joey could get off clean he has a chance to run by them, and he did," said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. "It was a great throw. It was a momentum change in the game. It put us right back in the flow and in the football game, but we were unable to do much after that."
Galloway, who has scored 11 touchdowns in his last 12 games with Tampa Bay, indicated that he loved the deep ball and wouldn't mind seeing more deep passes from the strong-armed Simms.
"I think everyone would like to see more of that," Galloway said. "Sometimes those plays are there, sometimes they are not. It's really a better throw by him than anything else. He out-threw the safety and we were able to get behind him and score."
Galloway, whose numbers suggest he will garner serious Pro Bowl consideration, leads the Buccaneers with 44 catches for 731 yards and six touchdowns this season.
