BUCS HEAD COACH RAHEEM MORRIS
Opening statement:
“Obviously, not the result we were looking for today. We are a frustrated football team. You come out and start out fast and do things right early, but we let them right back into the football game. Taking control of the football game and maintaining control, but then can’t get back into gear on offense. We didn’t help ourselves on special teams. We didn’t help ourselves on defense by getting the ball back fast enough. But next week, I’m excited. I’ve got three hours of practice a day. Lengthier time for us … we get chance to go out and work on some fundamentals. We’ve got to back to basic ball – ball security. You can’t win a game by turning it over seven times. There’s no way you can do that. We’ve got to go out and get back to ball security, fundamentals of football. We cut back last week, let’s go even further back. Let’s go back to training camp mentality.”
On what caused the team to unravel after starting with a 14-0 lead:
“They got the big play on special teams and then we had the big fumble. Obviously, you have to say the cause of unraveling has to be turnovers. There’s no doubt about that. We get a fumble and then give up four touchdowns. We come back and give up a big play on defense. That shouldn’t happen. Then you come back and give up another touchdown off another turnover. First, credit the Jags for getting the turnovers. I don’t want to discredit anything they did or their coach. To come out and have fumbles, to lose football games, a fumble on a punt – those are things you just can’t have.”
On rallying after the loss:
“We did a nice job practicing this week. We did a nice job executing. We came out early and showed what we wanted to do. We’ve got to maintain. The defense did a nice job going out there and getting off the field, giving the ball back to the offense. We did a nice job on third down in the first half, giving us max possessions, but when you have a couple of fumbles and get backed up and give the ball away and throw another turnover. Those things just can’t happen. Go to your running game and start to run the football – doing a great job – you get a big run and we get a big fumble. Ball security… we’ll bring it back together this week and their head coach will get them going.”
On if he is surprised the team has to go back to fundamentals at this stage of the season:
“I wouldn’t say surprised. I would say disappointed. It’s more frustration for me than anything. You never leave fundamentals, you never abandon those things, but to keep learning lessons each week and to learn from adversity, obviously, we’re not. You can’t go out there and create your own problems. You can’t fix your problems and then go back to something else. We need to go out and get those guys to play fast to get off to a better start, but you can’t create your own problems by having turnovers – especially seven. Turnovers are a part of the game, but to keep making mistakes as far as penalties – whether you agree or you don’t – it just can’t happen.”
On the play of QB Josh Freeman:
“Obviously, he didn’t play well. You put him out there. You’ve got to play him. He’s healthy, we make no excuses about it. He took a couple of shots today and was able to get back up. Obviously, you can’t say without pain. He played through it, because he’s a fighter. He’s a guy for his team. He wants to go out and win for those guys. You don’t want to make any excuses that he had bad throws because of his shoulder. We had bad throws because of bad decision making. I want tell you guys that he’s not ready to go.”
On if this was his low point:
“I don’t deal on negative thoughts. Last week it was frustration because of foolish penalties. This week it was fundamentals. It’s an opportunity for me to get these guys going as far as fundamentals. Get these guys to hold onto the ball, get these guys to deal with ball security, get these guys to deal with tackling, with blocking … we’ve got to go out and handle those things. I don’t deal with low points. I don’t ride the emotional rollercoaster. I see it as a challenge to me and staff.”
On the fumbles:
“That’s on us. Don’t blame the weather. There’s no explanation on why you fumble the football. There’s never, ever going to be an excuse for that. You have to hold onto the ball. You carry everybody’s livelihood in your arms and you’ve got to hang on to the football.”
On if he is worried about his job:
“If I was worried about my job security, I wouldn’t be coaching. I would be holding a microphone in front of another coach right now. I’m going to keep coaching and do what I have to do.”
QB JOSH FREEMAN
On the quick offensive start against the Jaguars:
“We were able to get up 14-0, we ran the ball well, I was able to complete the fourth down pass to Kellen Winslow and we were able to get some points on the board.”
On the turnovers throughout the game:
“It is really turnovers in general. When you’re a team like us, if you want a chance to win games you can’t afford to turn the ball over. I don’t know what the number was, seven today? It was disgusting and it really has no place in our game if we want to win.”
On his fumble that led to a Jaguars touchdown to tie the game:
“I went to tuck it and there was no ball in my hand. I got back and it was frustrating. I got to find a way to hold onto that ball, get out of the end zone and not allow that to happen. That allowed them tie the game up.”
On not being able to make any progress in the third quarter offensively:
“Once again, turnovers. I think we turned it over two or three consecutive possessions. It wasn’t that we couldn’t get anything going; we just never got anything going. It really makes it extremely difficult – if not impossible – to win football games when you turn the ball over like we did.”
TE KELLEN WINSLOW
On how does the team rebound after a tough loss:
“We just got to go back to work. There is nothing else we can do.”
On did the Jaguars do anything different than on film:
“Nothing at all. Similar looks, we just turned the ball over.”
WR MIKE WILLIAMS
On his thoughts on the loss:
“It’s disappointing to get a loss period.”
G DAVIN JOSEPH
On what went wrong:
“We still have the same underline issue of turning the ball over. That’s basic football 101. You have to keep possession of the ball and we didn’t do a very good job and that’s going to beat us every time.
On if they underestimated the Jaguars:
“You can win or you can get beat on any given Sunday. As long as you do the fundamentals you’ll have a chance and we didn’t do the fundamentals right so we didn’t give ourselves much of a chance today and the score reflected on that.”
On if can they rebound:
“We have the guys to get it back. We just didn’t make plays and we didn’t get that big spark that we needed. A lot of our drives ended really bland and when it was time to make a play it seemed like the Jaguars we’re making more plays than us.”
CB E.J. BIGGERS
On facing Jaguars rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert:
“He didn’t play like a rookie. He did everything he had to do, he helped his team win, you couldn’t tell he was a rookie quarterback.”
On the game plan against Gabbert:
“Do what we had to do. Everybody make plays and do your job, that was the game plan. That’s all we had to do.”
On if it was the most disappointed he has been after a loss:
“Every loss is disappointing.”
DT ROY MILLER
On how he feels about the Buccaneers’ future after their seventh straight loss:
“It is kind of hard to look into the future right now. There is no telling what can happen. It is a horrible feeling; I have never felt this bad after a game.”
LB MASON FOSTER
On what did the Jaguars do or did the offense lack effectiveness:
“They just made more plays then we did. We just got to make more plays, we got to finish games.”
On the performance of Maurice Jones-Drew:
“He runs hard. He makes plays and he runs well behind the O-line so he’s going to make plays.”
On what did Morris say in his post-game speech:
“You just got to keep playing and keep showing up and keep trying to get better. You can’t give up, you just got to keep playing.”
