Oh no! The sky is falling!
The Bucs are on a seven-game losing streak, the Bucs lost 41-14 to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars with 41 unanswered points, 12 penalties and seven turnovers!
Oh yes, it is true – the sky surely is falling!
Everyone run for the hills, take cover, hide your women and children, most importantly let’s fire head coach Raheem Morris, fire Greg Olson, the offensive coordinator, get rid of Josh Freeman, and scrap the entire defense and cut them all!
Yes, that will be the answer for all of us Bucs fans and Tampa Bay residents because this is just unacceptable. This horrid display of professional football by these Buccaneers has shown for sure that indeed the bottom has fallen out of this once proud organization. For the Buccaneers to get blown out and lose in this fashion against a Jaguars football team that was absolutely horrible – as revealed in their loss last week on Monday Night Football to the San Diego Chargers – is a sure sign that everybody on this Buccaneers team, coaching staff, and front office must be fired. Let’s start this thing all over again from scratch.
Our 2011, chest-beating, brash, “youngry” Buccaneers players and “youngry” head coach Raheem Morris are just plain beaten up and things have gotten away from them in a major way. What they once proudly touted this year as “youngry” – meaning their young hungry players and coaches – are now more so resembling “yuccaneers” of years past instead of a “youngry” team.
Wait. Stop. Hold up.
Isn’t this the same group that gave us a 10-win season just last year?
Hold up.
Isn’t this the same team that this year beat one of the best teams in the NFL, the New Orleans Saints?
Wait.
Isn’t this the same team that was a play or two away this year from beating who many are saying is the greatest team to ever play in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers? I mean isn’t this the same bunch of guys?
Yes, it is the same bunch of guys, folks. The same guys.
Well, I know we live in a “microwave society” that wants to have everything NOW at the push of a button. At the first sign of any problems, our “throw away” society throws it away and gets a new one.
These same folks will just point you in the direction to take a look at the San Francisco 49ers. They are winning in the first year of new head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season as head coach. These folks will cry out, “If the Niners can do it then why can’t we?”
Well, what about next year? What happens when these same 49ers are 4-12? Anything is possible, folks. Do they fire their head coach?
So where are we now? If you win one year you get to stay till next year. But if you lose that next year we have to fire you? If we conduct ourselves this way it’s a recipe for disaster and highly unstable.
So what is the answer?
Well folks, here is the answer.
There is no sure answer.
In this modern era of the National Football League anything is possible and there is no sure way to have a winning team that wins every year.
But I contend that if winning every year is what Bucs fans say they want and anything less is unacceptable then I say that is a lie. Bucs fans had a winner that won every year when Tony Dungy was the head coach of this team, but that wasn’t enough and Bucs fans wanted Tony fired.
Then Tampa Bay fans had head coach Jon Gruden, who won almost every year too, but that wasn’t enough and Bucs fans wanted him fired.
So now here we are with Morris who, at this rate, seems to be a head coach who will win every other season, and Bucs fans want him fired, too.
Believe me, I know how it feels to be on a losing team and to be an absolutely horrible team. When I was on the Tampa Bay “Yuccaneers” in the early 1990s, we were the laughing stock of the NFL. I have been on teams when after all the chest-pounding and proclamations of prowess of the offseason and early season die out, all you can do is look around the locker room and admit that you just are not a very good team and don’t have very good players. I know exactly how horrible of feeling that is and how much it hurts.
But the cry to fire everybody every time losing comes around is not the answer at all. I think we can admit to ourselves that this is true. After we fired Dungy, fired Gruden, and fire Morris in the near future, the desired outcome of winning every year with a new head coach has just not occurred. Firing people is not the answer.
These Bucs are not losing seven games in a row because they are not a talented team and they have bad coaches.
No. The Bucs are losing because … losing in the NFL happens.
Get used to it.
The sky is NOT falling.
Next year the Bucs will win. I promise.
And if for some reason they don’t win next year, then I promise we will win the year after that.
And if the Bucs don’t do that … then fire them all!
