During the Bucs news conference Monday at One Buccaneer Place reacting to the firing of Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay co-chairman Joel Glazer said the head coach search would begin immediately.
According to multiple reports that is in fact the case with former Packers head coach Mike Sherman, Titans’ defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and possibly former Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher all set to meet and interview this week at One Buc Place.
ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas wrote today that Mike Sherman would be interviewed in the next few days for the Bucs head coaching job. Sherman, 57, most recently was the head coach at Texas A&M and but was fired Dec. 1. Sherman coached the Packers from 2000 through 2005 and was an assistant before that. He also worked as an assistant with the Texans before taking over the Texas A&M program.
In his six seasons at Green Bay Sherman went 57-39 in and included five consecutive winning seasons. Sherman also uses the same agent as Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik, who is heading the coaching search.
Jerry Gray, played nine seasons in the NFL, including one season for the Buccaneers in 1993, and is currently the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans. In his first season as defensive coordinator with the Titans, Gray’s unit finished 18th in the league in total defense. Gray previously coached with the Seahawks, Redskins and Bills, and also had an earlier stint with the Titans.
The coaching candidate who has received the most attention is former Titans man-in-charge Jeff Fisher. Fisher’s name has been tied to virtually every opening, and even some that aren’t open yet, including Indianapolis, San Diego, St. Louis, Miami and of course Tampa Bay. Fisher is reportedly in Miami today meeting with the Dolphins and may make a stop to meet with the Buccaneers while in the state.
Fisher spent 17 seasons as a head coach with the Houston Oilers and then the Tennessee Titans compiling a 142-120 record and five playoff appearances, including a trip to the Super Bowl during the 1999 season, losing to the St. Louis Rams.
Other names that have come up as possibilities are former Ravens coach Brian Billick, Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, Carolina offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher.
