The general consensus was that the Buccaneers were almost certain to look to hire a veteran NFL head coach. While that may still ultimately end up being the case, Tampa Bay now appears to at least be considering the coordinator route.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Buccaneers have received permission to interview Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and the NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora reported via Twitter that Tampa Bay will also interview Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
Zimmer was with the Cowboys, Falcons and has been in charge of the Bengals defense since 2008. Chudzinski, formerly with the Browns and Chargers, just completed his first season as offensive coordinator for the Panthers and took the league's worst offense in 2010 to the NFL’s seventh ranked offense in 2011.
Tampa Bay has already met with Mike Sherman, Jerry Gray, Brad Childress and Marty Schottenheimer and was scheduled to meet with Houston defensive coordinator Wade Phillips today, but Phillips took himself out of the running last Thursday night.
