BREAKING NEWS: According to multiple sources Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has been hired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Also reports have the Indianapolis Colts interviewing Jerry Gray today and plan to meet with former Vikings coach Brad Childress about their recent opening after firing Jim Cauldwell earlier this week.
Now approaching the third week, the dust of the Buccaneers lengthy coaching search may be finally starting to clear. While a decision is probably not imminent reports have the Buccaneers starting to weed out candidates and are planning to select one former coach and one coordinator to bring back for follow-up interviews over the next week.
ESPN.com and multiple sources reported the Buccaneers were in Dallas this week and met with two Green Bay Packers assistants, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements on Thursday. Philbin is reportedly one of the Dolphins top candidates to replace fired coach Tony Sparano.
The Packers offense was ranked 3rd in the leagues last season averaging 405.1 yards per game behind only the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots and quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 4,643 yards, 45 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
The slower than anticipated process has already put the Buccaneers at a disadvantage in hiring assistant coaches. On Thursday the Saints and former St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo joined forces just a few days after the Atlanta Falcons made former San Francisco head coach and Dolphins coordinator Mike Nolan their defensive coordinator. Both Spagnuolo and Nolan were highly sought after defensive minds and were more than likely on Tampa Bay’s wish list. But not only are they no longer possibilities to come to Tampa Bay they now are with NFC South division rivals.
In addition Philbin and Clements the Buccaneers have also interviewed Mike Sherman, Jerry Gray, Brad Childress, Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Zimmer, and Rob Chudzinski.
Saturday Mark Cook will breakdown the coaches individually and list the positive and negatives of each.
