The Buccaneers have added one more addition to Greg Schiano’s staff as PewterReport can confirm that Tampa Bay has hired former NFL running back Earnest Byner to coach running backs.
Byner was selected by the Cleveland Brown in the tenth round (280th pick overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft He played for the Browns (1984–1988; 1994–1995), Redskins (1989–1993) and the Ravens (1996–1997).
He finished his 14-year NFL career ranked 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 8,261 yards on 2,095 carries, with 56 touchdowns. He also caught 512 passes for 4,605 yards and 15 touchdowns, returned 33 kickoffs for 576 yards, totaling 13,442 all-purpose yards and 72 career scores.
In addition to his No.16 career rushing yards ranking at the time of his retirement, Byner finished his career within the NFL's top 50 all-time leaders in rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, and total yards.
After his playing career was over Byner joined the front office of the Ravens as Director of Player Development then later joined the Redskins as running back coach. In 2008 Byner joined Jeff Fisher in Tennessee in the same capacity helping running back Chris Johnson to two record setting seasons.
In 2010 Byner took his coaching to Jacksonville and was once again instrumental in helping Maurice Jones-Drew to several team records, including leading the NFL in rushing in 2011 with 1,606 yards and a 4.6 yard per carry average.
