PewterReport.com has learned the Buccaneers have added former NFL star Earnest Byner to their coaching staff as running backs coach. Byner spent the past two seasons in Jacksonville.
The Buccaneers have added one more addition to Greg Schiano’s staff as PewterReport can confirm that Tampa Bay has hired former NFL running back Earnest Byner to coach running backs.

Byner was selected by the Cleveland Brown in the tenth round (280th pick overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft He played for the Browns (1984–1988; 1994–1995), Redskins (1989–1993) and the Ravens (1996–1997).

He finished his 14-year NFL career ranked 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 8,261 yards on 2,095 carries, with 56 touchdowns. He also caught 512 passes for 4,605 yards and 15 touchdowns, returned 33 kickoffs for 576 yards, totaling 13,442 all-purpose yards and 72 career scores.

In addition to his No.16 career rushing yards ranking at the time of his retirement, Byner finished his career within the NFL's top 50 all-time leaders in rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, and total yards.

After his playing career was over Byner joined the front office of the Ravens as Director of Player Development then later joined the Redskins as running back coach. In 2008 Byner joined Jeff Fisher in Tennessee in the same capacity helping running back Chris Johnson to two record setting seasons.

In 2010 Byner took his coaching to Jacksonville and was once again instrumental in helping Maurice Jones-Drew to several team records, including leading the NFL in rushing in 2011 with 1,606 yards and a 4.6 yard per carry average.

Very happy to see Earnest Byner on board as coach. Hopefully Blount will listen and learn what he needs to know to become an elite back.

I think this is a great hire. He was a very good in his day and a very good coach in his coaching career. Feel like the Bucs are moving forward. I like all the coached except Raye and sheridan, but I'm going to give those two the benifit of the doubt. We will see what will happen when the preseason games roll around and see what we got. GO BUCS

Yet another good, if not great, hire by the Bucs new coaching staff and Dominick !! I really like this hire, and Bostad, the O-line coach, will be fantastic !! The coaching staff is really coming together now. I really like most of the choices, although, who am I to say. I just go by what little I know and what I read about the potential hires and actual hires. I think they are really doing a good job this time around. It seems as if they have learned from their mistakes. GO BUCS ! ! !

Remaining coaching positions to be filled: Special Teams, QB coach and Quality control. There are assistants to some of the coaches already named that are also to be hired, but the one's above completes the key positions. You may want to get a second opinion, at the moment, I'm paying homage to the god, Bacchus and may have left someone out! lol.

Sounds like a great hire. So what positions remain before the coaching staff is complete?

Another good hire by Coach Schiano and GM Dominik. They have a coaching staff where everybody can learn from each other; I believe that is called team work. To top it off he has a very experience Assistant in Butch Davis. Now all we need is some success in free agency and a decent draft and I believe the Buccaneers will be competitive despite another rough schedule in 2012. Just look how far we have come in just 6 weeks. Go Bucs!

Wow, sounds like a great hire! Byner consistently coached 1000 yd rushers with great pass blocking technique. Combined with bostad seems like the run game is going to be significantly improved, and finally a focus of the offense. I was not a fan of Logan and couldn't understand why he was retained for so long since he obviously did not develop blount (couldn't even get him to learn the playbook!) Thanks for the updates MC

That about locks it up. Richardson will be a Buccaneer. Nice coaching staff now almost complete.

It will be interesting to see how the RBs on the roster respond to him. His resume speaks for itself, he was one of the best and he has coached some of the best. He will be an important factor in motivating Blount and holding him accountable. I'm pretty certain that other RBs will be added to the roster. So he will be a key member on this staff responsible for coaching some of the youngest players on the already young team. This situation will be interesting moving forward.
