Bucs Hire LSU DB Coach Ron Cooper

PewterReport.com has learned the Buccaneers have added another member to their coaching staff with the hire of LSU DB coach Ron Cooper.
PewterReport.com can confirm tonight the Buccaneers have hired LSU defensive backs coach Ron Cooper to join Greg Schiano’s staff in Tampa.

Cooper does not have any NFL experience but his college coaching resume boasts stops at Notre Dame, Louisville, South Carolina, Wisconsin and Mississippi State among others, before joining the Tigers in 2009.

Cooper has produced some one the better defensive backfields in the NCAA over his three year tenure in Baton Rouge, including coaching former first round pick Patrick Peterson, and projected 2012 first-rounder Morris Claiborne, who is believed to be high on the Buccaneers wish list come April.

LSU's secondary nabbed 16 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries and 12 forced fumbles, as the Tigers led the nation in turnover margin and ranked fifth in total interceptions with 18.

    GREAT COACHING HIRE RON COOPER IS A GOOD DEFENSIVE MINDED COACH HATE THEY DIDNT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ALABAMA A&M IN THE PORTFOLIO WHERE HE COACHED ROBERT MATHIS WHO IS ONE OF THE SACK MASTERS IN THE NFL GREAT HIRE I THINK WE ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION GO BUCS!!!

    If they do not take Claiborne at #5 now, then THAT would be very telling. I don't know if they take him how telling that would be however. - - - - - - As far as Talib, I would expect the Bucs to wait until after march to see the trial pan out. If he is cleared, then they try to trade him. If not, they cut him.

    Yeah, let's trade Aqib if he's cleared, because this last season proved you only need one good CB to stop an offense from passing all over you...

    naw man dont you realize what kind of defense we would have with two shut dwn corners thats going to make our dline better and the dfense overall so schiano is saying the right thing by bringing him bk and hey i understand wat ur saying about talib but we need that type of attitude on the d as far as what he did to protect his sister after this guy has jumped on her and beat her up i prob would have done the same thats his sister

    First question I would ask Cooper is Claiborne the best DB on the team and is he better than Peterson. I would expect a totally honest answer if the Bucs were going to risk the first pick in their draft on the guy.

    This coaching selection process continues to be impressive and well thought out this go around. Why do I say that? Sheridian is getting a chance to see if he can be a really good DC with the help of Butch Davis; Sullivan is getting assistance from Butch Davis; and Cooper is getting the same thing with Jimmy Raye. With a year or two of assistance from Davis and Raye, all three of these selections will be much improved. Go Bucs!

    Excellent hire. Even if he doesn't work out as our long term solution as a DB coach he will provide excellent intel on Claiborne this year and Mathieu (sp?) for next year. I'm still hoping we stay at #5 and take Claiborne. I only want to trade down if someone else nabs Claiborne. In that case I would be just as happy with Wright or Kuechly (my spelling may suck this morning but I have to run to a meeting so I don't have time to look these names up).

    MJM, best not to consider anybody hired until there is an official release from One Buc Place. It was also reported yesterday that Steve Loney was hired as Asst. O-Line coach. There are still some assistants to primary position coaches that will be hired. By my count, we still need these primary positions - QB coach, Special Teams coach, and Quality Control coach.

    @Mark Cook: as always thanks for the info & all the work you put in. So, where does this put Jeff Hafley, who I assumed was going to be the DB coach. Is he now the Assistant DB Coach? As far as that goes what about the rest of the Rutgers highers? Lukabu, Butler, Angelichio, and Fraser? Have the Bucs' filled Strength, TE & DL Coaching positions--or are the Rutgers guys plan B? The Bucs' FO seems to be tight lipped even After they higher someone.

    Sure the Bucs' are getting great inside info on Claiborne--but I'm sure Coach Cooper has some good input on Kirkpatrick, or Barron who had double hernia surgery and won't be at the combine. (And who's draft status is probably falling like a certain DE the Bucs' nabbed in the 2nd last year.) This staff hasn't even evaluated their current team yet--I'm sure they haven't built their draft board either. Just everybody simmer down now. Enjoy the Combine, and try to remember how little success the Buc's have had starting rookies. (Beating the Rams in the final seconds really isn't that much success.) Midnight on March 13th, the beginning of FA, is when next years team will actually start to take shape.

    I doubt there is any connection whatsoever that Ron Cooper was hired in anticipation of drafting Morris Claiborne any more than hiring Bob Bostad meant the Bucs were going to draft OG Kevin Zeitler from Wisconsin. I actually expect Dominik to strongly consider trading down if he can find a trading partner with a good enough offer.

    you don't hire a coach to draft a player, thats ridiculous. This is a good hire though regardless who we pick at 5.

    WELL GUYS AND GALS YOU KNOW WHO THE #5 PICK WILL BE-IT WILL BE MORRIS CLAIBORNE. WHAT A SELECTION, BESIDES THE COACHING STAFF SOME COLLEGE SOME VET'S COACH AND SOME NFL PLAYERS GO BUCS. ITS LOOK LIKE THE FIRST THREE SELECTIONS WILL BE CB;ILB, AND ANOTHER DL OR OLB OR RB OR MAYBE AN OL PERSON-GO BUCS

    Even if we don't pick Claiborne, this is a fantastic hire. Best OL coach in college gets his NFL chance in Bostad, and now arguably the best DB coach in college gets his shot with us too. I will admit to being pretty worried about how our staff was going to fill out...but I'm quickly becoming increasingly excited about what my team is putting together behind the scenes. With that being said, this hire pretty much screams "Morris Claiborne." Go Bucs!!

    Likewise, A rb of Richardson's quality comes along about once every decade. I can remember when the Bucs had a chance to take AD Peterson and took Gaines Adams. Richardson will get between 15 - 25 touches a game running and receiving. That will be more of an impact than any DB or WR that the Bucs are considering.
