Schiano: "Keeping Jeremy On Our Football Team Was One Of Our Priorities"

The Buccaneers announced this morning they have re-signed OL Jeremy Zuttah to a new four-year deal.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have re-signed OL Jeremy Zuttah to a four-year contract.

"Mark (Dominik) and I agreed keeping Jeremy on our football team was one of our priorities this offseason. He is a young, talented player, who we both know very well. We are pleased we could get this deal done and secure Jeremy for years to come," said Greg Schiano.

Heading into his fifth season, Zuttah has played in 58 regular season games with 44 starts. A versatile lineman, Zuttah has made starts at both guard positions (five at right and 30 at left), as well as center (nine). He was a third-round selection (83rd overall) out of Rutgers University by the Buccaneers in the 2008 NFL Draft and has helped Tampa Bay to some of the best single-season offensive performances in team history.

"Not only am I happy to remain a Buccaneer, but also to be back playing for Coach Schiano. I couldn’t be more thrilled about this opportunity," said Zuttah.

    I am happy we kept Zuttah, wherever we play him and whomever we land, we have a proven productive O-Lineman on our roster for the next few years...but with all these posts about getting Nicks and Grubbs, the real question is will they want to come to Tampa???!!! We had problems attracting coaches and we've had some issues attracting the stronger FA's the past few years anyway. So i see that if we are to land the cream of the crop FA's, we'll need to throw alot of money their way, maybe even overpay because at this juncture, Tampa is not an attractive landing spot. So don't get upset when the FA's that you want the Bucs to land end of elsewhere...not because Dominik didn't try, but because the players didn't want to come. Reality Check.

    I agree with you, but let's not give the Glazers any ideas. I can just see them at their next media conference saying, "It wasn't our fault we didn't spend money this offseason. We tried. Players just didn't pick us." Ahhghghg.

    I checked and according to Pat Yasinskas we would free up $5.725 million by cutting Faine. WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!!! Consider it done in my book. All kidding aside, I think this would most definately mean its time for Faine to go. I can't think of any upside to keeping him whatsoever. He is too injury prone and is the weakest link strength wise. Well let's hope that's a wrap and we can put the cap money to good use.

    Although I DON'T like Faine at all, the cap numbers suggest we just keep him as back up for the year that is left on his contract or cut him. He would be a high paid back up but cutting him gives us no additional cap room and we may take a hit possibly, I am not quite sure. Look it up and its something along those lines. I'm too lazy but I read about it on a topic a few weeks ago. He would be pissed about the demotion but its about the team right? He was never supposed to see this year of that contract, which is bullspit if you ask me. I hope we take no hit, cut him and sign another younger back up or draft one. If he was knowingly not coming back next year and still start I think he would be a pain in the butt ( verbally ).

    Freaking embarrassing. Most teams franchise a D-lineman or even a QB for tens of millions of $. Only the Bucs are soooo cheap that they use the franchise tag on a kicker. Pathetic.

    The center for the Pack is a free agent, we know he can shot gun snap. Still get Nicks, and have Zuttah as back up.

    This was a NO BRAINER and for once the front office treated it as such....now here's another NO BRAINER....cut/trade Faine as Zuttah is a better center, and go sign Carl Nicks from the shameless saints to put together one of the NFL's best legitimate bonafide bad-a!s offensive lines....Now that's a no brainer!!!!! And I bet it will have the seats in Ray Jay that much more filled as well...oh yeah...BTW..another NO BRAINER for our front office right now should be re-signing Michael Bennent..Mark or anyone else know what's going on there and why it's STILL going on?? GO BUCS!!!!

    I SAY GREAT, LETS GET ON WITH FOOTBAL-I HOPE WHEN MAR 13 AT 1200 HRS TAMPA WILL LINEUP 6VETERANS FA AND SIGN THEM. THEN TAMPA IS DOING SOMETHING THAT THE PREVIOUS FEW YEARS WOULD JUST SIGN THEM GET A DEAL AND SIGN THEM AND GET THE VETERANS AND THEN GO OUT AFTER THE ROOKIES THAT THRY NEED-GO BUCS 2012

    if we did move cut faine and move zuttah too center and sign nicks, which i think we should. We would have too draft a center in the later rounds of the draft because that would put us shockingly thin at center.

    I agree with the other posters about this signing (the positive ones anyway), that Zuttah is better than Faine and that Nicks or Grubbs would be a great FA signing. It's nice to see a subject related to this team we can all agree with.

    Faine might have the smarts to be the center, but surely lacking in physical skills to play that position. He got manhandled a lot there and is definitely injury prone. This team needs another 2 interior lineman especially one to take over for Trueblood. Another bad signing by Dominick.

    ehinote, Why would you want to sign Hutchinson? We dont need another veteran on the downside of his career. Rumors are the Vikings are going to CUT him because his play doesnt warrant his pay. We need players just entering their SECOND contracts, not 3rd! Hutchinson's best days are behind him. Older players are more likely to get injured and are more likely to see their skills depreciate rapidly at some point. We are not competing for the Super Bowl next year, and even if we were, not sure we would want Hutchinson. Now Carl Nicks and Ben Grubbs fit the criteria of what we should be looking for- young players who can still get better and who are also significant upgrades. Zuttah at Center and one of those at guard is a substantial upgrade over Faine and Center and Zuttah at Guard.

    bfarbs - really good points and I don't disagree with you at all. I'm just being realistic. I don't think the Bucs spend what they need to get Nicks or Grubbs. They would be able to spend less for Hutchinson and he is still an excellent lineman (would probably be our best right now) he was given the highest contract for an interior lineman during his last contract and he is not the best interior lineman anymore. That is why they are cutting him. He's still real good. Yes, I would love Nicks or Grubbs, but doubt that will happen. Hutchinson would not be here in 3 years, but it allows us to concentrate on some other positions this year. And maybe draft a guard high next year that will be ready in a few years.

    I think most agree that we are a better o-line with Zuttah at center and a proven veteran LG. Would like to see Faine's $ going to some other FA.

    good signing if we use it the correct way... we need cut faine and move zuttah to center and then sign nicks!!!! our o line would be pretty darn good!!!
