Buccaneers fans have been asking for a splash in free agency, and Tampa Bay ownership appears to be trying to answer the call Tuesday afternoon, negotiating with the most coveted wide receiver in the 2012 free agency class, former Charger receiver Vincent Jackson according to multiple reports.
Jackson is coming off a season in which he caught 60 passes for 1,106 yards (18.4 avg.) and tied a career high with nine touchdown catches. The 29-year old Jackson has a career 17.5 yards per catch average and will do wonders in stretching the defense and helping Freeman develop.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound monster receiver has posted 272 career catches for 4,754 yards and 37 touchdowns. He is an elite receiver and shows no signs of slowing down at age 29 after averaging 18.4 yards per catch while racking up his third career 1,000-yard season in 2011.
The Buccaneers receivers struggled much of the 2011 season, especially 2010 leader Mike Williams, who was unable to duplicate his rookie season success. Williams was criticized for being unable to beat single coverage by former head coach Raheem Morris, going all the way back to a preseason game against the New England Patriots. Williams finished the 2011 season with 65 receptions for 771 yards and three touchdowns.
The other receivers on the roster were also unable to display the ability to be a No.1 receiving threat. The team’s second leading receiver was Preston Parker who ended the year with 40 catches for 554 yards and four touchdowns. Dezmon Briscoe showed flashes in 2011 ending the season as the team’s leader in touchdown receptions with six, on 35 receptions for 387 yards. 2010 second-round draft pick Arrelious Benn was coming off of a knee injury suffered late in 2010 and had just 30 receptions for 441 yards to finish fourth in receptions by wide receivers.
The Buccaneers are in desperate need for a game-changing player who could create mismatches with opposing defenses. In 2011 the Buccaneers offensively had just 32 runs over 10 yards and 38 passes plays that went for 20 or more yards. The Buccaneers will counting on Jackson to improve that number dramatically in 2012 if a deal can be reached.
