Tampa Bay Make It Official, Nicks A Buccaneer

The Buccaneers and free agent guard Carl Nicks have agreed to terms on a new contract for the Pro Bowl guard that will make him the highest paid player at his position in the league.
The Buccaneers added another top free agent this morning coming to terms with free agent Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks. The deal is for five years and believed to be worth $47.5 million with $31 million guaranteed.

Nicks, 27 is arguably the best guard in the NFL and was thought to be one of the most sought after free agents on the market, but it was clear from the 4 p.m. opening bell of free agency that Nicks was one of Tampa Bay’s top targets, and it appeared the Buccaneers weren't planning on letting Nicks leave without a signed contract. Nicks arrived in Tampa last night, and the two sides worked into the morning hours in hammering out the contract that was announced this morning.

The Pro Bowler has started 61 of 64 NFL games he’s played in and hasn’t missed a start in the last three years. The 6-foot-5, 343-pound Nicks should look great at left guard opposite fellow Pro Bowler Davin Joseph and would allow the Bucs to establish an interior power running game.

While it is great to upgrade the offensive line and steal a great player from a division rival like the Saints, Tampa Bay will have to pay two guards contracts totaling more than $100 million as Joseph signed a seven-year, $53-million deal in August and Nicks was seeking a deal that would pay him slightly more than that. Nicks was thought to also be seeking a deal worth more than Saints teammate Jahri Evans who signed a 7-year $56.7 million deal in 2010.

Despite re-signing Jeremy Zuttah to a four-year deal worth over $12 million last week, Bucs could have an opening at left guard as Zuttah is expected to either compete with Jeff Faine at center if Tampa Bay sign Nicks, or Faine could be released outright to pave the way for Zuttah to become Josh Freeman’s snapper.

Props to the Glazers for backing up what they said they would do. They didn't have much choice! My first season ticket payment will now be sent happily.

THIS IS DOUBKLE THE PLEASURE THAT THIS OLD FLORIDIAN WHO GREW UP IN TAMPA SEEING TAMPA VS TENN IN THE OLD TAMPA STADIUM, AND NOW LIVING IN EAST TEXAS AND SOON TO RETIRED FROM THE USPS. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE TAMPA COME TO JERRY JONES MASSIVE STADIUM AND TAMPA BAY CONNECTING TO VINCE JACKSON AT TWO TD'S AS TAMPA ROUTES DALLAS 40 TO 14. I DREAM OF THIS, WHO SAYS THAT THE GLAZERS DON'T SPEND THE MONEY. I UNDERSTAND THATS MORE FA'S ARE COMING TO TAMPA. I CAN SEE THAT BIG RB FROM BAME RUMBLING BEHIND THAT OFFENSIVE LINE. GO BUCS.

So, the Bucs do this upgrade for the boys from Rutgers, how come they left Morris hanging? Oh well, glad to see the signings. Bucs out to make a splash while others wait on Peyton Manning. Sweet!!!

Nice 1 and 2 receiver, very nice OL, now draft Trent Richardson and pick up another corner and linebacker and this season will be fun to watch!!!

NEVER THOUGHT I'D SAY THIS GLAZERS RULE!!! GREAT WORK

Just wish there was a serious TE talent out there to be had~would love an upgrade to the underwelming KWJ...

Whoa! I look where the team's mouth used to be and see money! Lots of money! Very impressed and remembering, cap space is one thing - but signing bonuses and guaranteed money is CASH! Assuming Zutah will move to center with Larsen backing up both he and the guards. Unsure who will be a Sunday-dressed backup tackle. CB, MLB, RB, TE and backup QB still needed. Long list and a reminder of how far the team still needs to go, but encouraged by what we see so far. Go Bucs!

It's important to note all three free agents were signed with ZERO signing bonuses.

I'm a sunshine pumper and ridiculously optimistic, but I have to admit that I was getting close to giving up on the Glazers. This is a good day to be a bucs fan.

Thats what im talking about TAMPA !! Signs pointing to the thought the Glazers actually want to build a competitive squad..Lets face it ~ the NFC South will be a serious battleground for the foreseeable future in the NFL, nice to see steps being taken to keep us competitive with the likes of the Falcs,Sinners, and Camolina. Nicks is a beast..

    HELL YEEEAAAAAH!!!!!!

Way to go Dominck & the Glazers!

I would like either Lofton or Hawthorne at the MLB spot. Now that we have signed the big 2, I'm not sure we have the $$ to get Lofton, plus, he is asking for way too much from everybody. Would love to get M Lawson to play opposite of Foster on the outside if he will be cheap enough. That would really upgrade our LB's and their ability to stop the run. Would like Landry, Nelson or Smith at the Safety spot, all would be upgrades. So far, soooooo good.

Unbelievable! Every Buc fan should be estatic about these signings. I started with four on my wish list and only have one to go - MLB. I'm starting to believe even that is possibble. This will make out Draft a whole lot easier when it is to fill in depth and not have to count on third rounders being starters!

OMG !! OMG !! Fantastic job Bucs !!! Way to not let him leave without the contract! Jackson and Nicks, I would have liked either one, but to get BOTH is amazing. All we need now is some LB help and a RB of any type. Then can just upgrade at S, more CB depth and more RB depth either through free agency or the draft. Again, great job Bucs !!

this addition makes us the best OL Tampa has ever had now lets sign Eric Winston at RT. Hey Blount guess what run to the left side now, lol
  • avatar

Correction: Trent Richardson, run left. ;-)
  • avatar

Three things left to do: Lofton, a 3rd down RB, and then drafting Claiborne.
  • avatar

    The Bucs just signed Nicks.
  • avatar

    I heard we just got Nicks for 5 years/47.5 million/31 guaranteed...JACKPOT !!!
  • avatar

Signed HIM......... GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most activity in three years or more........

Nicks would be a big signing, not just from a money standpoint. It makes a lot of sense. Faine is more than likely gone, along with his cap number. Zuttah played well at center when Faine went down so I would imagine he's the guy they pencil in at the position. The interior of the line will be one of the best in the league. The only weakness will be at right tackle, assuming Zuttah plays well at center. This would be a great start for Schiano's game plan of running the football and taking shots down the field.

If they sign Nicks, that will be a major get. Word is Lofton wants 9mil and he's not going to get that anywhere. That's why Atlanta let him walk and replaced him with a lesser MLB - Lofa Tatupu. Lofton made 600k last year and is considered a 2-down MLB because of his poor coverage skills. Supposedly, he's in Tampa with Gerald McCoy and Reggie Smith (49er) trying to make a decision. I like his run-stopping ability in the middle, but not at 9mil. Apparently, the Bucs don't either.
  • avatar

It seems to me that if we sign Nicks then Faine has to be gone or, at least renegotiated. That $8mil cap number is not going to cut it with the other monsters on our line who stay on the field. Very encouraging.
  • avatar

You are so right. We sign Hicks that's so good so good. Still want Lofton but he doesn't sound eager to deal with Bucs....remember tho Greed IS Good! lol Why not lust after Lofton? First.....NICKS !!!!!
  • avatar

Well, if Nicks gets signed, you can toss out the 'cheap' label that has been pinned on them. Now it's up to the Bucs fans to get back to the stadium and support this team. Still would like to see them sign Curtis Lofton....ok, maybe I'm getting greedy now!
  • avatar

Cut Faine, give Hicks his money! Faine is always hurt, can't be a Pro Bowler if you are not on the field.
