Legendary cornerback Ronde Barber announced today he would return to the Buccaneers for at least one more season, his 16th in the NFL.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have agreed to terms with CB Ronde Barber on a one-year contract. Barber had been contemplating retirement again this offseason, but like last season decided to come back in 2012, his 16th in the league. With the uncertainty of Aqib Talib’s status, the return of Barber gives new head coach Greg Schiano another option at a position that performed poorly in 2011.

"I'm pleased to announce that I'll be back for my 16th season as a Buccaneer," said Barber. "Coach Schiano, Mark Dominik, and the Glazer family have been terrific throughout this process. I'm really excited about the direction of the team, the moves we've made, and I can't wait to get back to work."

This past season Barber started in all 16 games for Tampa Bay and finished with the fourth-most tackles on the team (77). He also recorded five tackles for loss, three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, one sack, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble, as he was one of only two players on the Buccaneers to record a statistic in each of the respective categories. In Week 3, Barber was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the ninth time in his career, including the postseason.

Barber has spent his entire 15-year career with the Buccaneers, and currently holds the longest active streak for starts in the NFL with 199, starting every game for the Buccaneers since Week 10 of the 1999 season. His consecutive starts streak is also the longest by a cornerback in NFL history, while his 224 consecutive games played is tied for the second-longest streak by a defensive player in the NFL since 1970. Barber has 43 career interceptions and 27 career sacks, making him the only player in NFL history to have 40 or more interceptions and 25 or more sacks in a career.

His 1,337 tackles rank second in team history behind only LB Derrick Brooks and his 11 touchdowns on fumble/interception returns ranks fifth in NFL history. The five-time Pro Bowler is also the only defensive back in the NFL since the merger (1970) to start each of his team's games for 12 consecutive seasons.

Thank you Jesus! I'm so glad we'll be seeing #20 on the field. I remember his first time, and it seemed like ages ago... but you never get tired of seeing him show what a pro looks like!

I guess Ronde has been on the team long enough for me to buy his freakin Jersey. Thanks Ronde, your dedication to the Bucs has been great, and I loved your training camp log that was in Pewter Report your rookie season. Long time ago indeed.

It's hard to believe that it's been 16 years since the Bucs drafted this too slow, too small cornerback who was best known as Tiki's brother. At first some thought he should be called Ronde "Toast" Barber. But the guy who made the greatest play in Bucs history on a cold evening in Philadelphia has become one of the greatest to play his position. Big play after big play I have often said, "It's always Ronde."

Thank you Ronde for always being the outstanding professional and personable person that you are...I really couldn't imagine you not having been excited to come back and see where this coming season could lead..I'm sooo glad you made me right...I think you'll secure your position as the greatest Buccaneer in franchise history with this season, and that's saying something..GO BUCS!!!!!

I'm glad he decided to end his career in Tampa Bay. I know one thing for sure is that he will go at it 100%. Go Bucs!

He'll show the young guns how to prepare, perform, and carry themselves like a champion. Even if is from the safety position. Never underestimate the value of a mentor!

First off, I'm glad to have Ronde back. He deserves to play as long as he wants. As far as where to play him it depends on who we're playing that week. He was doing a great job covering TE's until we played the 49ers and it was all downhill after that. Before that game he shut down T. Gonzalez and J. Graham but after V. Davis exposed him both Gonzalez and Graham found a way to take advantage of the height difference. I think Ronde would be best utilzed covering the slower skill players, whoever that might be each week. That could be the slot WR, the RB if he spends a lot of time out of the backfield or the TE if he's not too tall...or runs a 4.38 like V. Davis.

As a CB Rhonde may get beat this year, but that is why Shiano needs to move him to Safety now. He also will be a valuable leader in the locker room. You sure don't want Talib mentoring our new CBs. Welcome back Rhonde!

Glad to have him. Just hope we can still draft Morris too

This guys over the hill, he will be beat like he was last year.

Maybe, maybe not, but good to see him come back one last time as a Buccaneer than with someone else.
