Bucs Left In Limbo As Talib's Trial Rescheduled For June 25

Anxiously wanting to find out a resolution on the fate of cornerback Aqib Talib's felony trial originally scheduled to begin today, the Buccaneers will now have to wait until June 25 for the outcome, as the defense made a motion to have the start date pushed back.
Troubled Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib’s trial has been pushed back once again, this time to June 25, according to Talib’s attorney Frank Perez.

“These are false allegations against Aqib (Talib),” Perez told PewterReport.com. “We made the request to move the trial to make sure we would be able to do something.”

Perez would not elaborate on the circumstances but was looking forward to representing Talib.

“We have no desire to reach a plea agreement with the state regarding this case,” Perez said. “We look forward to getting this behind us and behind Aqib before the (NFL) season starts.”


Originally scheduled to begin today, the prosecution motioned that the date be changed to April 16 due to a member of the prosecutions team’s wife scheduled to be in labor this week.

The veteran cornerback was arrested in March 2011 and charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, after allegedly firing a gun at his sister’s boyfriend. The charge is a second-degree felony, which can carry a prison sentence of five to 20 years.

Talib has been no stranger to trouble since his arrival since entering the NFL. In July 2008, Talib was involved in a fight with teammate Cory Boyd at the NFL's Rookie Symposium and later that year, during an altercation with an offensive lineman, Talib inadvertently struck teammate Torrie Cox in the face with his helmet.

Then in August 2009, Talib was arrested after an incident involving a cab driver while riding from a St. Petersburg club to a Tampa hotel. The driver claimed Talib punched him as the cab driver was driving. Talib pleaded not guilty, and the case was dismissed after he entered a pretrial diversion program and took anger management classes.

Talib was suspended one game without pay by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.



In Indianapolis three weeks ago new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano hinted that Talib would get a clean state. The Buccaneers haven’t publically commented on Talib’s situation since then but the general thought the team were hoping the situation would be resolved before the April 27 draft.

The state’s key witness, Shannon Billings, a registered sex offender in Texas, is currently in jail for felony sexual assault on a child.

    Here Iam again I think that CB Talib should be released and draft CB Morris Claiborne, and just go with what is available in this year draft. I think that the 6 players that Tampa selects will fit right nicely into the new coaching scheme. I think that with the FA acquired in 2012, That Tampa will turn the corner in 2012. I will be please with a 8&8 or 9&6 record.     I really don't see the Bucs doing anything with Talib until after the trial is over. If he is suspended he does not take up a roster spot and when he gets back they can either trade him or release him. He will play this season if the trial is stll going on since they will need a verdict for the league to suspend him. If found guilty they will cut ties. If he is not he will play.

    Sneedy16, they can still pay him, but they have the choice whether he sits out until all this is resolved. One thing i do know? Time takes care of everthing.

    I have said this before and I still contend that Talib is an above average CB if you judge him by his stats alone. However, when you view the total person, it is easy to understand why people disagree about his value. So much so, that my appeal for him to remain a Buc is muted by the continued drama in his life. At some point, what could have been outweighs what is. The Texas case and prior incidents as well have moved me to emotionally detach myself from his outcome. I have no vested interest in what the Bucs decide to do with him. They can cut, trade, keep, sit or play him – I’ve moved on and at some point I suspect they likely will to!

    Again, we have to read Talib's entire "criminal" past that we know all too well. I know some of you think the state of Texas should already be building the gallows for #25, but I suspect our court system figured out it doesn't have much of a case and is hoping this latest delay will improve their chances of finding one. You want to convict someone without a trial; head up to Penn State. There's someone lurking in the boys shower.

    Agreed that Claiborne is now the likely pick. The Richardson pick could have been nice, but we already have Blount. We can pick up a speedy 3rd down back in rounds 2-3, so this is likely the most efficient use of the picks that we have.

    I think this development makes Claiborne a likely pick up in the 1st, But I would be happy with Richardson as well. No doubt that with Richardson our offense becomes formidable. Claiborne means our cornerback situation is solid for yrs regardless of what happens to Talib

    I say go for Richardson too because with him and Blount you can keep the chains moving and keep the defense off the field. If Cleveland takes Richardson, which they may, then take Claiborne and hope Doug Martin is available in round 2. Martin is similar to Ray Rice and I think he could give the offense some punch too. Claiborne has the wrist which needs surgury, but he will be a great player for many years, so it's hard to go wrong with him as well. Rumors also have Minnesota taking Claiborne. I'll believe that when I see it. If it does happen, Kalil could fall to the Bucs because Cleveland has a great left tackle in Joe Thomas. No matter how you slice it the Bucs are getting an impact player at #5. I would hope the Bucs resign Cedrick Mack for some insurance at corner.

    Everone has there thoughts on the draft so i thought i would throw my 2 cents in as well. You can not ignore the fact that we only have 1 legit running back-Go for Richardson in the first. Not only can he run , catch and BLOCK, he is the best running back to come into the NFL in years.I also think that the Bucs have spent there money on defencive backs this off season and the Talib thing WILL go away. That said , look for Brown the lb from NC to come in the second round . Remember Butch Davis? And now i think it would be a good time to go for David the kid from Nebraska. All are TUFF and smart football players , the kind that the bucs say they are looking for. And as a Buc fan i know we need Tuffness on this defencive side of the ball. Now we can go for depth on both sides of the ball in the later rounds. Thanks and have fun with that .

    Even if he goes we'll still aite. I say draft RICHARDSON, in the 2nd Alfonzo Dennard, and get back in the 2nd for Lavonte David. And we need draft Brandon Taylor with our 5th. It would also be nice to draft Jeff Demps in like 6th or 7th. We NEED a burner like that on our return game. And that's how ull have a successful season. And next years the year to get corner preferably David Amerson.

    1st round RB Richardson, 2nd round CB Gilmore, 3rd WLB Spence or 1st round CB Claiborne, 2nd round WLB David, 3rd round RB R. Turbin. In first situation Gilmore will be gone by earlier second, may have to trade up back into 1st to grab him

    I think we need to grab T. Richardson if he is there. Why have both sides of the ball unfinished when we could at least be solid on offense? Sorry but if you can be dominant on offense & be competitive on defense I say do it. We will be able to wear teams down with Blount & Richardson & control the clock. If Richardson is not there then & only then get Claiborne. Why not go get Asante Samuel? Rookie running backs have a much better chance making an impact immediately in my opinion & if you have a chance to grab the best in the draft I say do it! I'm not saying Claiborne isn't worth it but I feel we are so close on offense now with the free agent acquisitions why not complete the picture? Either one would be great additions to our team but wouldn't it be nice to see us run all over teams the way they have done it to us? Guess it's wait & see time. Go Bucs!

    As much as I like Richardson, I think we need to go Claiborne with our first pick. We can pick up a good RB in the 2nd or 3rd round. The diffference bstween Richardson and a 2nd or 3rd round RB isn't as big of a difference as Claiborne and a 2nd or 3rd round CB. There is gonna be maybe 2 RBS that go 1st round as to 4 or 5 CB's that go 1st round. When you gotta face Brees, Ryan, and Newton twice a year you need good corners. Blount is a good RB if we get him carries. Last year we fell behind so much we never ran the ball enough.

    As much as I woould like Richardson at # 5, especially with Nicks and Jackson on board, I think we have to face the simple fact that our defensive backs and linebackers must be our primary focus in this years draft. We can get a 3rd or 4th rd RB to compliment Blount, but we wont be able to stop the NFC South's QB's from picking us apart. Draft Claiborne at #5, one of several Lbs at 36, and a RB in the 3rrd. Stop dreaming about dropping down for more picks in the 1st. Wont happen, and Finally forget Talib. Remember there is always the chance that our current Defense may improve with an offseason and new Coaching Staff on board. Last years failures may be 2012 superstars. Go Bucs

    martinii, this also makes a lot of sense because a good RB is usually a 6-8year player and a good CB can easily be a 10 year player. I would go for Claiborne first, but Richardsen wouldn't bother me that much if we picked him.

    draft claibourne IF HE'S AVAILABLE at #5....don't drop talib quite yet... he still has value.... short term... the problem is that we have multiple needs... we only have 2 rbs total on our roster..... lb is thin..... with foster the leader in his 2nd year..... and, we don't have all our draft picks... missing a 3rd /4th?? not positive. therefore, i think they should wait before making final decision on talib.

    ederk, we are missing a 4th rd pick and I believe they will not cut Talib, but I also think he will not be wearing a Buc uniform anymore.

    Believe that regardless of the Texas court's decision, the NFL will suspend Talib for several games. If Claiborne is the real deal - and I think CB is about the only place a rookie can potentiall prosper, taking him at 5 makes sense. Talib's issues can be sorted out later. This defense needs players. Nothing would surprise and 2 CBs taken in this draft could make sense, along with 2 LBs, 2 RBs, a couple Safeties ....

    Gulfstrings, this makes sense also. Regardless of the way I feel about Talib, he is not in the picture for the next few months and that takes him out as a starter at best.

    I agree with pinkstob for the most part. Theres no doubt whether we get Claiborne or not, that we NEED Talib. Barber is not gonna be here after this year and Wright is barely starting caliber. On the other hand, he will always be a problem because thats how he was raised, hes an idiot. So do we deal with it or not?

    Clearly the defense has someone that they want to testify that won't be available until June. Maybe it's this Shannon clown or maybe it's someone else. Whatever it takes to get it right. The facts are Talib hasn't be proven to have broken the law since punching the cabbie. If he's cleared of this he would have done everything Dominik has asked of him since the cab incident. That being said and he's one of the league's top CB's what GM in his right mind would cut him? We need 4 good CB's to field a decent defense and you guys are declaring victory with just Claiborne and Wright.

    pinkstob, support Talib all you want, but will be available for the start of 2012 practices? The Bucs will not gamble that maybe he will get off, and maybe the trial might be over before the start of the practices, and maybe he will behave in the future, and maybe he will come in focused and in shape despite what he is facing in legal isues, and maybe, maybe, maybe. Nope, he is done as a Buccaneer. No Coaching staff is going to pencil him in as their starter. We will draft Claiborne if he is availalbe and if he is not we will trade down and still draft 2 CB's no matter what. Just my opinion.

    The Bucs organization probably made their decision regarding Talib before this news. The legal system is unpredictable at best. The trial has already been moved twice and might be moved again. Barber is coming back for one more year but that's probably it. I can't imagine not picking a top flight corner early in the draft just because Barber decided to come back. Wright is getting starter money and looks to be the #2 CB and Talib just isn't reliable from a character standpoint. Talib is in the final year of his contract and I can't see the Bucs giving him a big contract considering his past. If the Bucs are building for the future, CB has to be part of that plan. If Claiborne is off the board, I would like to see the Bucs trade down and stockpile picks. Easier said than done though.

    I agree Talib is obviously a good CB for us but Claiborne is the future. Time to move on and just cut our loses. Hey R. Morris would want him lol Bucs Draft Needs by round CB LB RB I dont even like down south but I will be making my yearly trip down to see my Bucs with a offense for once. Go Bucs!!!

    Most everyone knows my opinion on this. Actually by his attorney delaying this case it makes it easier for the Bucs to move on without Talib; thank you Mr. Attorney. You keep charging all those fees and keep uping the payoff prices. At least we will never have to see this thug in a Buccaneer uniform again.

    Looks like Claiborne will be the pick at #5. Bucs can't afford to wait until after the draft to find out what Talib's future will be.
