How was day two?
“I thought it was good. The first day there’s excitement, especially with a new staff or when you’re away from playing football, period. Second day, guys are sore. They’re not in training camp shape right now but I thought they came back and had a very good energy level the whole practice. And you know what you look for as a head coach are those dips. And there weren’t any. There was a consistent energy. Now, we’re miles away from an execution standpoint and an understanding standpoint, but as far as energy, which is all I can ask, energy and want to right now, they’re giving a tremendous effort so, I was pleased with that.”
Commenting on the Aqib Talib trade reports:
“Only because there are some extenuating circumstance, I am going to comment on that. Usually I won’t, because in this day and age with all the blogs and internet deals, if I commented on every speculation it would be an ever day task. But because there is a history with Aqib, all I can tell you is there is absolutely zero thinking on our part as far as wanting to do that. I want him to be a Buc. I understand there were issues before I arrived. I do know that. And I’m not naïve to the fact that some of those are a heck of a lot bigger than just playing football. But I am really hopeful, as I’ve said before, that that clears itself up. Because since I met him for the first time he’s done everything I’ve asked. He’s practiced well and prepared well. But again, I try not to judge people other than how they’ve treated me. And he’s treated me well, so I don’t know how all that got started, but no, there’s no truth to that.”
On the missing player:
“This is voluntary, so I had people check to make sure he’s OK. I’m not going to call on the phone and say, where are you. It’s voluntary. He knows we’re here. The entire football team is here. There’s issues sometimes. I understand that. But we have to go. I don’t spend a lot of time focusing on the guys that aren’t here. I have a whole football team that is here so I’m spending every ounce of my day and energy to get them to do the best they can. Now, if someone is missing, it’s a shame because it’s hurting the team, but there’s reasons sometimes and other times, it just happens. So we’ll figure it out as we go.”
Was Dez Briscoe here today:
“Dezmon was not here, no.”
Commenting on how Freeman has looked thus far:
“What I see now is a guy who is incredibly hungry and incredibly focused to do what we’re asking him to do. It’s going to take time, but this guy, he wants to be good and that is so much a part of the battle. He wants to be great. Now, he’s learning a new vocabulary, new plays. He’s being asked to be the leader. I think he’s doing a good job. And I think Coach Sullivan would say the same thing. Certainly there is a lot to learn. He made a throw today that was fun to watch and that’s a big-time quarterback that put that ball in there and I said, you know what, if we protect this guy and we run the football effectively, he can make those throws. And he will.”
On looking at the tape of last year on Freeman:
“You know, I don’t even want to watch last year tape. Now we have our own tape, yesterdays and that’s what I want to watch. We’ve studied ad-nauseum last year’s tapes – offense, defense and special teams. We’ve kind of moved forward now and in yesterday’s tape he made some good decisions, a couple bad, but he threw the ball nicely and I can’t wait to get up from when I’m done here and watch the tape from today’s practice, because he made two or three throws that were big –time NFL throws.”
Did you talk to Blount on his saying he didn’t want Richardson on this team?
“I don’t get too caught up on that stuff. We talk about everything. The one thing is I want the players to know I want them to feel like they can talk to me about anything and I want to be able to talk to them about everything. So as we get know each other and relationships grows and the trust grows I think they will figure it out that I have one purpose and (Mark) Dominik has one purpose to make this organization the best it can be. We are going to do whatever is the best thing for the Bucs. LeGarrette (Blount) has practiced really well two days in a row. LeGarrette (Blount) is trying to do everything that we ask. That’s all I can tell him is I love the way you are practicing and let’s keep it up. What runs up coming in the draft who knows? I don’t get too worried about that. The more good players you have the better team we are going to have.”
McCoy was asked to describe the defense and he described it as one that destroys gaps and is that a fair assessment?
“It depends who the destroyers are. If you got the right guys doing it yes they will destroy gaps. It won’t be the scheme that destroys them it will be the players.”
Blount said he concentrating on carrying ball higher to knock down on fumbling and is that something you implemented?
“It is something that every guy out there who carries the football—it is a fundamental principle we believe in ball security. If you look over time the single biggest statistic that correlates to winning is turnover margins. So it is not only how many you give away, but how many you get. Takeaways and turnovers. It is one of the core principles of what we believe in. So we are going to work it every day. It is so important they named the game after it, right? So we are really going to put a premium on it.”
You have talked about Barber playing safety out there and what does it say about him being open to that after being in 5 Pro Bowls as a corner?
“In my short time with Ronde (Barber) he is the epitome of a pro football player. Having coached in this league even though it was 15 years ago I remember it [and] I had the opportunity to … and Ronde was one of those guys. There was a play yesterday that was kind of an everyday play that you could go through the motions or you could really—and he did it like a rookie trying to impress the coaching staff. That to me is what a true pro is. He is trying to perfect his craft. I like what I see out there. I don’t know if that’s where he will stay or not. I really like the way he is attacking it and I think he can do it. You know in the scheme we play I think he can do it. Some would worry about his size, [but] I don’t worry about it.”
Your reactions on seeing the schedule?
“You know I have never been a big kind of get too worked about it either way because the reality is you are going to play them however they come. I am a little excited to tell you the truth to be able to play my first regular season game as a head coach to do it in our home stadium. I thought that was kind of cool, but other than that people comment about where the bye is [and] people comment about who we get to play in the division [or] out of the division. I have worked for some guys that sit down and they go through the schedule a week before or two at this point and how do you know what you are going to be, right? You are one ankle sprain away from a whole different world. I am excited about the schedule and I think..I know we got 16 of them so try to make it more than that.”
