PewterReport.com can confirm a ProFootballTalk.com report that Buccaneers wide receiver Arrelious Benn will miss as much as four weeks due to an MCL sprain in his knee. Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com first reported that Tampa Bay cornerback E.J. Biggers had a mid-air collision with Benn during Friday's training camp practice at One Buccaneer Place and broke a bone in his right foot. He is expected to miss at least a month's worth of action.
Benn, a 2010 second-round draft pick, caught a career-high 30 passes for 441 yards (14.7 avg.) with three touchdowns last year. As a rookie, Benn had 25 catches for 395 yards (15.8 avg.) and pair of scores. Benn is one of the fastest players on the team and has been responsible for the two longest pass plays – a 64-yard catch in 2010 and a 65-yard touchdown last year – over the past two seasons.
The arrival of Vincent Jackson has bumped Benn out of the starting lineup for 2012. Benn started nine of the 15 games he played in during the 2010 season and started all 14 of the games that he suited up for last year. With Mike Williams starting at flanker opposite Jackson, Benn is currently battling Preston Parker for the third wide receiver role on the team. Benn is expected to miss at least the first two preseason games in August.
Biggers, who is in a contract year after being selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, has been the team's nickel cornerback and occasional starter for Tampa Bay over the past two years. The knock on Biggers has been his lack of playmaking ability, evidenced by just two interceptions over the past two seasons. Last year, Biggers only broke up 10 passes to go along with his 52 tackles despite playing in all 16 games.
Although the Bucs added Eric Wright to replace Ronde Barber, who switched to safety this offseason, Biggers was vying for the chance to start at right cornerback in training camp. During Friday's practice he was fourth on the depth chart behind Aqib Talib, Wright and second-year player Anthony Gaitor. Because the Bucs lack experience at the cornerback position outside of Talib and Wright, Biggers should still stand a reasonable chance of making the team this year if he can quickly and successfully recover from his injury.
