“Guys were into it. Mother Nature cooperated a little bit, which probably helped out a little bit. Like I said yesterday, now that we’re in the grind we have to get better. I’ll try to answer anything I can.”
Can you talk about the injuries from yesterday?
“Well, [I’m] not certain what it is going to be time wise. We’ll have to play that by ear, but it’s not a short thing. It going to be more than two weeks and we’ll go from there. You never know though. I always ask for best case worst case and it’s usually somewhere in between. It’s part of the game, unfortunately in no pads. It’s an unfortunate thing, but we have to keep pressing on and those two guys will get back. They are going to keep preparing and working. My philosophy with a guy that gets injured is certainly there are things you can’t do with skill development but there are always a lot of things you can do. Mentally, in the weight room, and then your rehab. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to work on the things we can control.”
Is surgery involved in either injury?
“No.”
Is it a sprained MCL for Benn?
“It’s a knee and a foot [for Biggers].”
Which knee and which foot?
“I could, but I don’t know what it is. I probably have to make a decision. I’m probably just going to keep it general because it’s their business. But it’s a knee and it’s a foot. And then reality is our opponents don’t need to know which knee or foot, unless it’s obvious you know. Not that I’m saying anybody would do anything.”
Can you talk about Mike Williams being carted off the field?
“It was just heat related, you know cramps. I think. You know I haven’t met with Todd yet.”
Can you talk about the young group of cornerbacks?
“You have Eric and you have Aqib, and then it is a youngish group. But it’s the guys that we have on our roster and their getting better every day. If you look at Anthony Gaitor, he’s doing better every day. Look, we’ll bring some guy that we already have to bolster things and just keep moving forward and coaching them. My whole thing when guys go down is we help them get better but our focus is on the guys that are going to go line up and play. That’s who has got to do it. If you’re a first teamer or if you’re a second teamer, you got to step up and you have to be ready for your opportunity.”
When can you put the players in pads?
“You can do it tomorrow [and we will].”
Will you get a good read on the physicality of the players as soon as the pads go on or does it take some time?
“I think when you put the pads on you’re going to see. I’m anxious to see it. That is still the game.”
With the heat tomorrow and when you put the pads on, are you going to still maintain the same pace as the last two days?
“That’s the plan. As I’ve talked to the team about, we play the game with pads on so this is really the time. We’ll have as many opportunities to be in pads in the preseason as we will the entire season, so this is the time to lay the foundation of who we are and what we’re going to be so we have to take advantage of it.”
Are you happy with the improvement you’ve seen in the conditioning and do you there has been an improvement?
“I think they were very serious about their training on their break. We call it a break, yet it’s a time where they have to get themselves in the final parts of their preparation. I thought are team did a good job. A great job is when we come back and it’s flawless and we just hit the ground running, but we did a good job, especially for our first time being together. I think now we have to play our way into football shape. There’s a big difference between the cardiovascular conditioning needed and the football shape, so that’s why we try to push them out there with the tempo. It’s always been my philosophy to have things slow down on Sunday and not speed up. If we can get that than that’s a good time.”
Talk about how Aqib Talib has stayed consistent during the offseason and has stayed in town with the team to prepare.
“I think that’s the biggest thing that he has been consistent. Again, I have hesitated to get into it before we arrived because people would say that’s great, but that’s how he’s going to be the great player that he’s capable of being. It’s just work, work, work and prepare, prepare, prepare and he’s got gifts. When those gifts meet his preparation, he can be special.”
How has Mason Foster done on picking up the defense so far?
“I think he’s doing a good job. We’re all feeling our way, but Mason has come back with the right attitude and he’s working very hard.”
