Bucs Injuries
• Bucs safeties Mark Barron and Ronde Barber were at practice but sat out on again Friday to rest up some minor injuries. According to head coach Greg Schiano, Barron suffered a toe injury at some point this week.
• Defensive end Michael Bennett missed another practice with a mystery ailment. Bucs head coach Greg Schiano did not elaborate on Bennett’s condition when asked after practice Thursday, and again on Friday was evasive and said he was unclear on exactly Bennett was suffering from, but alluded to the fact it appears to be minor.
• Eric Wright was at practice but held out for the most part due to some tightness in his back according to Schiano.
• Guard Carl Nicks felt the effects of the hot temperatures today and left practice early. Schiano told the media he believed it was heat-related, and the staff wasn’t going to take chances in that situation.
• Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye continued to miss practice with a minor knee tweak. Okoye was in full pads and worked out with team trainers and in individual position drills, but did not participate in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.
• Left tackle Donald Penn (left calf), wide receiver Arrelious Benn (knee), E.J. Biggers (foot) and defensive end Da’Quan Bowers (Achilles) continue to miss practice. Benn was wearing a brace on his right knee, but was out at practice.
Tampa Bay Roster Moves
• There were no announced roster moves on Friday.
Bucs Depth Chart News
• There weren’t any big depth chart changes, but some players were able to get more reps due to players missing practice with health issues. The secondary again saw Mark Barron and Ronde Barber give way to Larry Asante and Ahmad Black who both are taking good advantage of the additional time on the field. Black had an exceptional day on Thursday, and looked good again Friday in pass coverage, and Asante didn’t appear to make any glaring errors.
• Gary Gibson was again working with the second unit behind Roy Miller and seems that if Gibson can stay healthy he will be the No. 2 at nose tackle.
The Big News At One Buc Place
•The biggest topic of the day was the extreme heat. While everyday so far in camp has been very warm, Friday was the worst according to Schiano who told the media, “Today was without a doubt the toughest day physically since we’ve been here. That flag didn’t move a heck of a lot.”
Most players took a knee during water breaks and the trainers had their hands full keeping the fluid bottle filled. While there didn’t appear to be many players cramping, left guard Carl Nicks was unable to finish today’s practice after “Feeling woozy” according to Schiano.
Schiano finished his afternoon press conference referring to the conditions again.
"I was really proud the way they fought through it. It wasn’t pretty, but we fought through it. That is about as tough as I have seen in a while. So that’s good.”
• Tampa Bay spent part of practice, as they do everyday, working on special teams, but Friday was the first day they worked specifically on punt block. Each day the special teams appear to install a new aspect of their playbook and Friday it was all about getting two hands on the ball.
The Buccaneers had two groups facing a punter and practiced taking proper angles for the punt block. The punters weren’t holding back and several players took the full brunt in the abdomen, forearms and hands, including Aqib Talib who appeared to get slightly dinged on one of the drills.
•Standout Plays In Tampa Bay
• Right tackle Jeremy Trueblood found himself matched up with defensive tackle Gerald McCoy at one point today, and the former Boston College product won a rare matchup with the Oklahoma native. McCoy went with an outside the guard rush move, ripping past guard Davin Joseph and quickly penetrating. Trueblood identified the threat and blocked down, manhandling McCoy fairly easily, driving the Sooner to the ground to the delight of his offensive line teammates.
• Sammie Stroughter took a punt back for an approximate 70-yard score drawing cheers from three quarters filled stands. Stroughter fielded the punt on the south part of the practice field and headed right before making a couple shifty moves then breaking it back left down the sideline to the end zone.
• Cornerback Myron Lewis had the hit of the day, laying out running back De’Anthony Curtis on a pass play. The big pop had many in the media area asking if that was really No. 23 on the hit as Lewis in his two seasons hasn’t been known as a physical presence. Curtis attempted to get back up, but immediately thought twice and returned to the turf until trainers arrived to render aid. Curtis eventually was able to walk off the field under his own power, and it appeared he just had the wind knocked out of him. Schiano talked about the hit during his news conference.
“You love it because you love hitting, but we just got to protect each other. It is a long year. I would rather see that one against Miami rather than us.”
