Blount Starts Over Martin As Bucs Release First Depth Chart

The Buccaneers released their first official depth chart on Tuesday and the only major news was that veteran running back LeGarrette Blount was still starting ahead of rookie Doug Martin, who was a 2012 first-round draft pick. To view the official depth chart, click this Pewter Report article.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released their first official depth chart on Tuesday in advance of the team's 2012 preseason opener at Miami on Friday night. There were no real surprises on the depth chart, but the one training camp battle that may be the most competitive and interesting is the starting running back spot, which shows veteran LeGarrette Blount ahead of rookie Doug Martin, who is one of the team's two first-round draft picks.

Other notables include former starting safety Cody Grimm still listed as a third-teamer, Mossis Madu still running third team ahead of 2012 seventh-round pick Michael Smith, and Preston Parker running ahead of Sammie Stroughter as the Bucs' punt and kick returner.

Injured Buccaneers wide receiver Arrelious Benn (knee) and cornerback E.J. Biggers (foot) haven't lost their place on the depth chart as Benn is running second team behind Vincent Jackson and ahead of training camp star Tiquan Underwood, and Biggers is listed ahead of Myron Lewis behind Aqib Talib at left cornerback.

    Absolutely correct macabee. It's merely the first depth chart of a long training camp before final cut downs. Injuries, trades and Practice Squad considerations will have a big effect.

    We gotta have Penn to run the ball and protect Freeman. We need Talib to make that secondary solid. They gotta get these guys taped up and on the field. Benn must be hurt worse than they are saying since he is not in practice only a few days before our first preseason game. This Team has some real talent this year but it won't make a bit of difference if we cannot get our best 53 on the field. At least it sounds like McCoy and Clayborn are going to be gamers this year. I cannot wait until Friday. This is when you get to see the future super stars and the Future Bartenders.

    I wouldn't read too much into this depth chart because Schiano said the NFL forced him to put it out! Meaning there is some truth here and there is some smoke. Example: Mike Ingersoll behind Carl Nicks - The Bucs cut Ingersoll after OTAs and he was picked up by the Pats who cut him 2 weeks later - then picked up by the Bucs again. No way is Ingersoll ahead of Desmond Wynn, but what better way for Schiano to get the most from one of his hand-picked guys during preseason. And why wouldn't Sciano want to motivate Doug Martin during preseason than to have him feel entitled because of his draft position. The depth chart of Sept 3rd is the one that counts!

    I swear I saw something a while back saying Danny noble was released but he is listed last on the TE position, was he resigned? Or is this an error?

    Danny Noble is indeed still there. Matter of fact, he worked after practice with Luke Stocker.

    No surprises here and that's why I have concerns. The only new first teamers are Barron and David. The DL looks kind of weak. Does anybody have a projection when Penn will be in pads and how many weeks after that will he be ready to protect Josh and open up the holes for our RB?

    I've been out of town the past few days so forgive me if this has already been discussed among the posters but I'm not too crazy about the idea of Parker as our main kick and punt returner. Maybe the Jacksonville game last year is still stinging me. It could also be that I can't think of any explosive kick returns he has ever done. I like Parker as a slot receiver, but I think Stroughter is better at returning kicks and punts. I also can't wait to see what Michael Smith can do in a live game as a returner.

    Not too many surprises. It seems veterans were given the nod ahead of rookies (ex Madu over Smith). I was a little surprised to see Hughes ahead of Johnson on the FB depth chart, and Dunsmore as the #5 TE. Dunsmore might not make the team this year.
