Here is what you need to know about what happened at Buccaneers training camp on Tuesday, August 8:
Bucs Injuries
•Defensive tackle Gary Gibson was again on the sidelines but didn’t participate in team drills. Gibson has a minor Achilles injury, and most likely is being held out for precautionary reasons.
•Defensive back Aqib Talib was also a scratch during Wednesday’s workout, still tending to a nagging minor hamstring issue.
• Left tackle Donald Penn (left calf), wide receiver Arrelious Benn (knee), E.J. Biggers (foot) and defensive end Da’Quan Bowers (Achilles) continue to miss practice. Benn was wearing a brace on his right knee, but was out at practice.
Roster Moves
• The Buccaneers waived cornerback Derrick Roberson and signed cornerback James Rogers to the roster. Rogers played collegiately at Michigan, alternating between cornerback and wide receiver. In a surprise move, head coach Greg Schiano told the media that defensive tackle Jayme Mitchell “left the team.” Signed in his place was defensive tackle Teryl White. Schiano said both Rogers and White will be available to play Friday night at Miami.
Bucs Depth Chart News
• There were no major depth chart shakeups and most likely won't be until after Tampa Bay’s first preseason matchup. On the field Wednesday, with Gibson still sidelined with an Achilles flare up, Frank Okam and Amobi Okoye took the majority of the reps behind starter Roy Miller. Okoye who has been nursing a sore knee on and off through camp was able to participate in numerous team reps and looked good against the second team offensive line, getting penetration on several plays.
While Doug Martin is officially listed as the No. 2 running back on the Buccaneers depth chart, the former Boise State Star took most of the first team snaps Thursday.
The Big News At One Buc Place
• As the Buccaneers start getting into game mode for Friday night, the first teamers gave way to those that will get the majority of the snaps – the backups. While several players will be getting their first taste of on NFL action, Schiano will also be in the NFL spotlight for the first time himself. The Bucs head coach didn’t seem too concerned with the career milestone.
“I really don’t think that way,” Schiano said. “I never have. That’s probably cheating the process a little bit, though, because you never really get to enjoy it, but I’ve always kind of been, what’s next. That’s just kind of how I operate. Hopefully some day, you retire and look back and say it was a heck of a deal, but not while I’m doing it.”
• The sudden departure of defensive tackle Jayme Mitchell raised a few eyebrows when Schiano announced the free agent acquisition had “left the team.” Earlier this week Schiano stated the defensive line depth was a bit of a concern, and with the loss of Mitchell the concern grows deeper. Tampa Bay signed defensive tackle Teyrl White to replace Mictchell. White (6-5, 278) had a productive four-year career playing North Carolina Central, racking up 158 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He also had a team-leading 11 stops for loss in both his sophomore and junior seasons, blocked a kick as a senior and contributed at least 2.5 sacks in each of his last three years with the Eagles. White started his NFL career in St. Louis last summer but was eventually waived midway through camp and picked up by the Seahawks. The Seahawks eventually released him shortly before the start of the regular season, and he then signed on with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League in November.
Standout Plays In Tampa Bay
• In 11-on11 drills during Wednesday's practice quarterback Josh Freeman found Luke Stocker on a tight end seam wide open until rookie safety Mark Barron cut in front of the route and made an impressive jump on the ball, almost coming away with an interception. Barron was back in action after missing a few days with a toe injury and hasn't made many standout plays thus far in camp. Wednesday's defensive highlight was an example of what the Buccaneers are expecting after using the No. 7 overall pick on the former 'Bama safety.
•During third-team redzone seven-on-sevens, quarterback Ratliff nearly had a pass intercepted by newly acquired cornerback James Rogers. The former Wolverine is way behind and needs several plays like that one to make an impact on the Buccaneers coaching staff. Although Rogers last played college football in 2010, he looks to be in great shape after spending last season in the Arena Football League.
• Tight end Collin Franklin had another good day working against the backup linebackers. Midway through practice Franklin worked to the sideline and took a pass from Ratliff down the left sidelines for a long gain. Franklin possesses very good speed and it took a deep defensive back to come over and force the tight end out of bounds. Franklin is way down the depth chart but long pass receptions as he has had the last two days could help his cause, if not for a roster spot then consideration for the practice squad.
