Here are some samples from the Buccaneers locker room after the 20-7 victory against the Miami Dolphins.
Tiquan Underwood on what he was able to do in the game:
“We all just try to go out there and play confident. We have been working hard in practice going against each other, so it was nice to come out and play against another team. We felt good out there. We have a few things we need to clean up and work on and we’ll do that tomorrow.”
Underwood on the jump ball he caught between two defenders:
“Dan Orlovsky put the ball up and gave me a chance. Our receiver coach, P.J. Fleck, says all the time ‘every ball is a great ball’. So I just went up, tried to make a play for him and was fortunate enough to come down with it.”
Lavonte David on his great special team’s stop on a punt return:
“It was just all about coverage. I was able to get down field. There was a lot of open space, a lot of green grass.”
David on the last couple weeks of training camp:
“It’s been great. It’s been a slow process for me but all the linebackers are helping me out. Becoming a rookie, you have to learn a lot of stuff real fast. But they supported me and have been on me about doing stuff right so I really appreciate them for that.”
David on what Sheridan has emphasized during the offseason:
“Just try to work hard. Just try to contribute what I can on special teams and defense and just do my job whenever I need to. Fundamentals are a key part of the game. When you get tired… it all comes down to fundamentals.”
LeGarrette Blount on the opening drive:
“Our plan coming into the game was to run the football. Run the football and see everything we’ve been working on. It’s real nice to see everything come together and finally get executed the right way. It went really well. Every play panned out the way we wanted it to and we ended up scoring a touchdown.”
Blount on his 4th down touchdown:
“Basically you got four chances to get in the endzone. If you don’t then they got the ball backed up. If we do then that’s even better, that’s what we want. We want to put points on the board. We’d rather have seven than three. That’s what we want to do in the red zone, run the ball.”
Blount on Mike Sullivan’s offense:
“Sully’s offense is pretty basic. He teaches us a lot of things. It’s just a lot of different formations and a lot of different plays that can be ran out of all these formations. This offense is definitely going to get the job done. We’re going to take shots down field with Vincent (Jackson) and Mike (Williams) and we’re going to run the ball with me and Doug (Martin). So that’s pretty much as basic as it can get. I mean, just like Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs and Hakeem Knicks and Victor Cruz. He’s just bringing that here. We’re looking for the same thing they got last year – a championship.”
Carl Nicks on the performance of the offensive line:
“I’m a firm believer that you’re only going to be as good as your line is, and that goes for defensive or offensive line. As an offensive line here, being able to protect Josh [Freeman] is important. He’s capable of greatness, we just have to give him time.”
Nicks on the positives to take away from the first drives:
We work well as a team right now. We have kinks to work out, and some penalties, but, you know, I am believing more and more in [Head Coach Greg] Schiano’s method. The way we practice, I felt in great shape out there. We could honestly see that they were tired more than we were.”
