LeGarrette Blount is that anything serious?
“I think it will be okay. I don’t think it’s too bad.”
Is it the knee?
“No, it’s not a knee. It is more up in his groin area. Not really sure exactly, but he just got bent a funny way. He will be sore, but I think he will be okay.”
Other than some miss tackles were you fairly pleased with the way first team defense played early on?
“In the beginning of the game, you know, a three-and-out, an interception that led to a score, and then another three-and-out; it’s the way to start the game. But, overall, just sloppy play; missed fits, missed tackling, not attacking the line of scrimmage, too much hovering as a defensive front. That was something that we talked about [as] an area of improvement, so it’s disappointing that we didn’t but we got to go back to work and we’ll get it right. We’re going to play run defense, we will do that.”
What happened to the offensive line tonight?
“I’ll have to take a look at the tape on that. We pulled Carl (Nicks) and Davin (Joseph) relatively early; [they] had fifteen plays. So that certainly changes the complexion in the middle of your line, but still whoever’s in there has got to play. I don’t know if it’s fair to isolate the middle or not, not being able to tell. I do know the quarterbacks took way too many hits, including Josh (Freeman). So you can’t do that. You’re not going to win in this league. You’re not going to have your quarterback very long if that happens.”
Were they just beating you off the ball with their defense?
“I don’t know if that’s, beating you off the ball is such a broad term. I think they just made some plays.”
Ahmad Black seems to always be in the right place at the right time?
“Luck is once in a while. He seems to be around the ball quite a bit, whether it’s practice or in a game. Now he did it in a game. He has a knack.”
Is this one of those games where you are glad that it’s a preseason game?
“Well, certainly it doesn’t go on our record, but the fact of some of the play that was out there [and] again the play was spread from the first team all the way down to player number 90. I am not going to—some guys are not going to be here that are doing it. So that’s not my concern. My concern is the guys that are going to be here. 53 guys are going to make this team. Where we are not executing, we need to get it fixed. I don’t know exactly who those 53 are so as we go now you evaluate every guy and try to fix everything that was mistaken tonight. Including coaching. Including myself. Starts with me every day after a game and then you work your way down.”
Can you evaluate your running back situation if LeGarrette Blount has to miss a little time?
“I would rather not get into the hypothetical if. I think LeGarrette (Blount) is a tough kid and I think that this isn’t something that will sideline him too long. Now if it does I will figure it out along with the coaching staff. I though Doug (Martin) ran the ball nicely which is an upside. He had that long nine yard pop and then we get a penalty it brings it back. Was it 16 yards? Ok. Then had 16 that didn’t count. I thought those were nice runs. Those weren’t just there was a whole. He made something happen on his own on both of them. He has done that a few times which is good.”
What else did you see that you liked?
“Well, I think again the first turnover; the defense went out there and made them kick a field goal. To me that’s tough and they did it. At the beginning of the game obviously that—I thought we had a few opportunities to intercept passes and we didn’t. You know you can’t do that. They scored on one of the drives. You can’t give people at this level a second chance. In the same token we didn’t take care of the ball. That is our number one priority in our program. The ball. The football. We put the ball to the other team. You can’t do that. We will go back to our work and get that corrected. It is not the end of the world, but we do need to get better that’s for sure.”
You expect to get Donald Penn back I guess he has been activated off the list?
“He came off the PUP list. Hopefully that will happen Monday. We will see. Which will be good. I think Donald (Penn) [has] gotten himself into real good shape too which should help him be a better player.”
How close is Arrelious Benn? Is he any closer?
“Well he is getting closer. You guys saw him running out there the other day. That’s the beginning of the next step. You get from indoor stuff [and] now he is out on the grass. If it can just keep moving along at this pace I think we are going to be in good shape, but you never do know when you are rehabbing. We will see.”
