THe Buccaneers were back on the practice field in full pads Monday and after the morning workout head coach Greg Schiano spoke to the media on a number of subjects including Donald Penn returning to practice, the emergence of Dekoda Watson and the lack of sacks so far this preseason.
How did Donald Penn look?
“I didn’t watch him (exclusively), so it’s probably not fair for me to comment on it. But I’m glad he’s back out there practicing.”Is it unusual to practice the day before a preseason game?
“The guys that are going to play the majority of it, we’re just going to jog through things. But rather than doing it against ourselves, we’ll just do it against New England. We’ll do the same for them. Rather than have scout teams, we’ll be each other’s scout team.”Is it going to be beneficial?
“Hope so. I know it’s going to be a benefit for us. I don’t think Coach Belichick would bring them down if he didn’t think it would be a benefit for them. They’ve done it more. I’ve done it 15-20 years ago when I was with the Bears. We did it a couple of years and I really enjoyed it. I think it’s good. I like watching other teams, seeing how they practice. Watching our players in relation to theirs. In games is one thing, but in practice it’s a little different.”Evaluation of Donald Penn’s tape from last year?
“Some really good stuff and then some things that were, and would be, hard to overcome if it would happen.”What do you mean, hard to overcome?
“You know, plays that are hard to overcome for offenses. You can’t overcome that stuff in this league, sacks, penalties. I don’t think teams are that good. Not consistently. Defenses are too good.”Why did you hold Donald Penn out an additional week? Was it conditioning or precaution?
“Combination. I didn’t want to rush something. A calf is an injury that can be lingering if you’re not careful. Plus, we wanted him to beat a weight and conditioning level that we think he can be effective. There could be a silver lining in this whole thing.”
What was that weight?
“I don’t want to get into specific numbers but he looks good I think. It’s the best I’ve seen him look by far.”Was LeGarrette Blount limited in any way?
“He was not limited and it was great to have him back out there.”Is Dekoda Watson making a case for more playing time?
“I think he’s been (making a case for more playing time) since the beginning. He’s been playing in our first rush group, so he’s continuing to make that case that he should be there, justifying the case is really what it would be. I mean, he looked great in one on ones and he ripped it up. That’s good stuff.” Is the lack of sacks from the defensive line a concern for you?
“I’d like to have more sacks, but again, are you affecting the quarterback and the delivery of the football and his accuracy? The scramble interception by Black came as an effect of the pass rush, flushing him, and the quarterback making a bad decision, throwing across his body. That doesn’t happen if he doesn’t feel like he has to get out of the pocket. No, we’re not where we want to be, but I don’t think it’s panic mode either.” Could you comment on Gerald McCoy offsides penalty today and in the first preseason game?
“When you’re coaching defensive linemen, you want them trigger-loaded. So you never want to not have any of those, because that means you’re not on the edge enough. But you get too many of them, especially in the wrong situation, and they can really hurt you. So, I’ll never say it’s Ok, but in my mind, I know we will have a few of those. Just don’t’ let be on third and five or four, or even six. If it’s going to happen, it better be on third-and-14.”Roy Miller emerging in camp and is he a pleasant surprise for you?
“I think as our base-down nose guard, he’s made for what we want him to do. He’s very strong, he’s explosive, and he’s quick. I’ve been pleased with Roy (Miller) the first two games. He’s a mature guy, a grown man and we need some of that maturity out there. I’ve been pleased.”Do you think this scheme fit his skill-set?
“I do. I think it fits him perfectly.”Are you seeing that get off from Gerald McCoy in games?
“Well he hasn’t played very much. He has played like 22 plays, but I have seen it yes. It is a quarter of football, maybe more than a quarter, like a quarter and half total that he has played. We will see him play some football this week. So probably a better question for Saturday. I have no reason to believe that it won’t be the same. They got a good offensive line. He is playing against two of the best guards in pro football every day in practice. So I think it should be great. I really am excited about what he can do.”What is it about Bill Belichick is it more than wins with him what is it about him that people see him as a gold standard?
“I think everybody is captured – if he didn’t have the achievement that he has had then it wouldn’t matter what he did. Right? His achievements are what make people look at him and say what is he doing different than everybody else? But once you start to unpeel that, you see what’s different. I think he kind of has a very unique ability because of his expertise with the game of simplifying things for the players and preparing the players. At the end of the day that’s all it is about. It’s about what can the players understand and use to their advantage when they hit the field. At the end of the day that’s all its about. That’s what coaching is. That and I think his experience in personnel. I think he is very, very sharp in that. So you take the ability to teach (which really that’s what simplifying is) and you take the ability to identify personnel matches—that’s why I think he is so successful. When you look at a guy and you try to use it as kind of a template to what you would like to do—that’s kind of what I see.”
