In the third and most important game of the preseason, six of the 10 players waived - Gant, Wheaton, Curtis, Thomas, Smith, Ingersoll, and Franklin - did not see any action.
The most notable of all the players cut is Ed Gant, who spent all of 2011 on the Bucs’ practice squad. After the first few days, Gant had a very quiet training camp followed by an even quieter preseason, with only one reception for 10 yards in the 20-7 win at Miami. Gant has good hands, but was very shaky when it came to route running and blocking – two things very important in Mike Sullivan’s passing offense.
Collin Franklin was signed by Tampa Bay last year and also spent time on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster. Franklin, an undrafted player out of Iowa State, played against Indianapolis and San Francisco is 2011. One of several receiving tight ends the Bucs carried on their 90-man roster, Franklin saw the least playing time in the three preseason games.
Tampa native and FIU product Greg Ellingson was signed by the Buccaneers from the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League, and was the most improved wideout in camp. Ellingson has very good speed, is developing solid route running ability, has reliable hands, and is a try-hard player. Ellingson was placed on other league exempt by New Orleans after he signed with the Bucs, and could find his way back to the Arena League. In six games for the VooDoo, Ellingson posted 33 receptions for 475 yards and 8 touchdowns and had his best performance against the Utah Blaze in March, catching 11 passes for 167 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The final roster cuts will be this Friday (August 31) when teams must be down to 53 players. On Saturday the waiver period for players cut will expire at noon and afterward, any player that was not claimed is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Teams may also begin to sign players to their practice squads with a limit of eight, unless one player in considered "international" in which case they may carry nine. Players signed to a practice squad are still considered free agents and can sign at any time with another team.
