Bucs head coach Greg Schiano spoke with the media immediately following the 16-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the season opener, and gave his quick thoughts before watching the tape.
Opening statement:
“It was a good team win, (I’m) really happy for the guys. They’ve worked awfully hard, and for them to be able to get a win after all that is good and now the journey begins.”

Not a lot of turnover and penalties, is that playing the way you want to play?
“If you take care of the football and you posses the football, you have a chance to win games and the guys did a good job of that today.”

How would you describe how you turned the defense around from the problems last year?
“It’s all about the players, their commitment to doing what we asked them to do. (Defensive Coordinator) Bill Sheridan and the defensive staff, we thought that they did a tremendous job in their preparation and all that. That and then the key parts are the players doing what we asked them to do.”

Can you talk about your time of possession and the running game? How important was that in your game plan?
“It was very important. I think it was 37 or 38 minutes time of possession. That’s critical when you keep No.1 (Cam Newton) off the field. The best way to defend him is to not have to defend him. When they got their chances, our guys did well. (Newton) is a tough guy to defend. The same with Steve Smith—he sure made some plays out there. You think you have him trapped, and all the sudden he’s jetting the ball down the field. So definitely a really good opponent and I thought our guys rose up when it was time.”

With all the work you all have out in this preseason, is it nice to gain energy from the win?
“It’s nice to win when you put so much effort into it. But I would hope everything we do isn’t based on one outcome. One win or had we lost today, this is the National Football League. Every game can swing one way or the other. There’s very few that are just comfortable in the third quarter and you just relax. There’s going to be tight games every week. I think that the things we believe in and that we just keep getting better and better at each week, that’s going to be the key. How much better can we be at the end of the year than we are now? That’s going to be each week.”

Can you talk about Ronde Barber’s performance?

“I was really happy for him—really, really happy. He got his start at cornerback which was great. That’s 200 (starts) in a row. The way he played at safety, that’s an important part. We’ve seen it in the preseason, but we need to do it now when it counts. I thought we had good safety play from him and Mark (Barron) and from Ahmad Black. He was in there in our sub packages and those guys are critical coming up with takeaways.”

Holding Cam Newton to just one touchdown has that been more than you anticipated it?
"I am kind of an optimist. I think we are going to do that so when we don’t I am obviously disappointed.  So 10 yards? I didn’t know if that would be the case, but there were some things that went our way. You are never as good as you think. When you look at the stats, it looks good, but we’ll get on the tape and say, ‘oh, we were lucky there’.’’

I'm so glad Barber is at safety. Pro Bowl all the way for Mr. Ronde barber. He was a great corner, but he is an even better safety. The Bucs may be the first team in NFL history to have three safeties voted to the pro bowl from the same team in the same year. Black Barron and Barber. The Killer Bees.
