The NFL announced Wednesday that Buccaneer defensive back was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the 16-10 victory over NFC South division rival Carolina on Sunday.
The NFL announced Wednesday morning that Tampa Bay Buccaneers DB Ronde Barber was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2012 season.

Including the postseason, this is the tenth Player of the Week honor Barber has received in his 16-year career. Barber recorded five tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and two passes defended, in the 16-10 win over division rival Carolina on Sunday. The game marked Barber’s 200th consecutive start at cornerback in his career, the longest streak at cornerback in NFL history and the longest active consecutive start streak among all players in the league.

Barber’s interception against Cam Newton was the 44th of Barber's career and ranks as the most in Buccaneers history. The sack on Newton was Barber’s 28th, the most ever for a CB in NFL history. Barber is also the only player in NFL history to record 40 or more interceptions and 25 or more sacks in a career.

Barber has the most Player of the Week awards in team history, as this marks the 36th time and the first since Week 3 in 2011 (also Ronde Barber) that a Tampa Bay player has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He has earned Player of the Week honors at least once in nine of his 16 seasons in the league.

More than likely, Barber will start Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants at free safety, the position he was switched to shortly after head coach Greg Schiano arrived in Tampa. In his first NFL start, Ahmad Black started the season opener against the Panthers at free safety and also recorded an interception.

Heading into Week 2 of the 2012 season, Barber has recorded 918 tackles and 128 passes defended and his 44 interceptions have been returned for 787 yards and seven touchdowns.

It is a pleasure watching Barber on his flight to the Hall of Fame. This Team and especially Barron are so lucky to have this guy. How many Interceptions will Barber end up with at the end of his career ? How many sacks ?
