Following the outstanding play by the Buccaneer defensive line against the Carolina Panthers last week, Tampa Bay has shifted their focus toward adding depth to the offensive line.
The Buccaneers announced Friday morning that they have re-signed G/T Derek Hardman and released DL Wallace Gilberry once again.
Gilberry signed with the Bucs as an unrestricted free agent in June after spending his first four seasons with Kansas City. The fifth-year player out of Alabama is a versatile lineman who can play both end and tackle. Gilberry was released by the Bucs September 1st after initially making the final roster cuts the day before. Gilberry was re-signed by the Bucs the following Monday when questions of the Buccaneer’s depth on the D-Line arose.
Tampa Bay is heading to the Meadowlands to take on the defending Super Bowl Champions on Sunday, and will be bringing with them a dinged up offensive line.
Left guard Carl Nicks has been nursing a lingering (minor) toe injury on and off for a few weeks and has had limited participation in practice the past few days. Head coach Greg Schiano told the media in his post-practice press conference Thursday the All-Pro guard will play Sunday, but the Bucs cannot be too careful with their prized O-Line possession.
Right tackle Jeremy Trueblood has struggled at his position over the course of the past season to the point of being forced to take a pay cut in order to remain with the team. Thursday, Trueblood was also limited in participation at practice and was seen walking with a visible limp and sleeve on his left leg. After practice, Schiano said Trueblood had twisted his ankle and was able to finish Wednesday’s practice, but the ankle was too sore for Trueblood to be a full participant Thursday and Friday.
In his third season in the league, Hardman signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and started four games as a rookie when Davin Joseph suffered a foot injury, but saw time in only three games last season.
Hardman was cut by the Bucs on September 5th in order to make room for CB Brandon McDonald to re-join the squad.
Hardman’s ability to play both guard and tackle and his familiarity with the new offensive playbook make Hardman a valuable asset while the Bucs have health questions on the line.
Gilberry could be re-signed in the future if the defensive line is once again devoid of depth, or after the Bucs sort out the questions on the offensive line take as they take one of the fiercest front four in the NFL.
